Amid intensifying protests and increasing political grandstanding, the controversy surrounding Manhattan’s proposed Park Place Islamic center just got a little catchier. August saw the release of “We’ve Got to Stop the Mosque at Ground Zero”, a protest ballad that, according to its lyrics, aims to stop the Park51 Islamic center from “thumin’ its nose at every victim and hero” because “thousands of Americans died in the attack/It’s a sacred place, and that’s a cold hard fact.” (The tune has an uncanny similarity—both in lyrics and melody—to “Freedom Isn’t Free,” the country rock–inspired stadium anthem from Team America: World Police.) The shimmering, upbeat pop track is the creation of one Trade Martin, whose Web site has since been partially expunged but is still accessible thanks to Google cache.
