Could “The Baby-Sitters Club” be making a comeback? The series was canceled by Netflix after two seasons earlier this year in March, and talk has swirled since about the series being shopped for a revival — or at least a TV movie — elsewhere.
But now there’s a bit more momentum for the show: “The Baby-Sitters Club” won two awards at the Children & Family Emmys this weekend, for both outstanding writing for a live action preschool or children’s program and outstanding children’s or family viewing series.
“We’re talking about it in a very preliminary way, talking about if we can bring it somewhere else. Or if we could do maybe like a movie, like kind of a wrap up special,” executive producer Rachel Shukert told Variety. “The girls obviously are older now than they were when we started and they’ve really grown up. Despite its nostalgic roots and passionate fanbase, "The Baby-Sitters Club" sadly suffered the same fate as many Netflix shows: canceled after two brief seasons. It seems cruel that such an effervescent and progressive update of the classic Ann M. Martin books should fade into Netflix obscurity. "The Baby-Sitters Club" was the first adaptation in nearly 30 years, after another short-lived television show and movie in the 1990s. The Netflix series reinvented the spirited young entrepreneurs in a fresh, amusing, and thoughtful way that appealed to Gen Z viewers and wistful adults like myself.

Too-soon Netflix cancelations have hurt before, but few untimely demises have been handled with as much refreshing honesty as "The Baby-Sitters Club." It shouldn't come as a surprise that the creator of a show as empowering and thoughtful as this one has some ideas about the structural problems that led to its cancelation, and that seems to have been the case when Rachel Shukert spoke with Vulture.

The Baby-Sitters Club is closing down. Netflix will not be ordering a third season of the family comedy-drama series based on the best-selling novels by Ann M. Martin.
The series, which follows the friendship and adventures of seven friends, Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi, and Mallory, as they start their own babysitting business in Stoneybrook, Connecticut, remains one of the best reviewed series on television, with both of its seasons scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the best shows of 2020 might not have made too many waves in the mainstream, but that didn’t stop it from garnering a tsunami of praise from both super-fans and TV critics alike. And now, the Netflix original has returned with a second season that might just be better than the first.
Rachel Shukert’s adaptation of “The Baby-Sitters Club” — the beloved youth book series by Ann M. Last year’s reboot of Ann M. Martin’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” was a TV highlight, not only for capturing and conveying pure delight but for giving audiences warmth and familiarity during a difficult time. It would have been easy for creator Rachel Shukert to rest on that goodwill. Instead, Season 2 of the Netflix original series is just as heartfelt, fun, and charming as Season 1 while simultaneously growing along with its characters.
In Season 1, the series already laid the foundation by creating the club itself and the central conflicts that would necessitate the club’s impact on its characters. With that being over and done with, Season 2 had two roads to take: Focus on what worked and keep the club in the forefront, or throw the club deep into the background to establish more individualized plots for the various characters. Well, surprise! Shukert and crew capably walk both roads, finding...

1. “Colin in Black and White” (available October 29)
Why Should I Watch? Wow, where to begin? I guess you have to start with the man himself, Colin Kaepernick. The former NFL quarterback who shined a spotlight on police brutality and systemic oppression through protest serves as co-creator and onscreen narrator in his six-part coming-of-age story. Then there’s Ava DuVernay — the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “Selma” and “When They See Us” handles co-creator, executive producer, and pilot director duties (and she also directs all of Kaepernick’s present-day scenes). Jaden Michael will play Young Colin, and really, that sums up all you need to know. Since his on-field protests, Kaepernick hasn’t been offered a position in the NFL, despite two appearances in the NFC Championship game, one Super Bowl, and the sixth-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in league history. That his first media project is framed around his youth, rather than a splashy tell-all about his professional career,...

"What we will say is she’s an artist with a wild, unpredictable love for life and a one-of-a-kind view of the world that serves her well in her art, which is her life’s passion."
"She’s fun, irreverent, impulsive, strong-willed and will bring a brand-new energy to the Power of Three.”
It's nice to know there's an element of mystery surrounding this new character.

One only needs to look at the fan reaction (some positive, much not) to last week’s news of a Sex and the City sequel series to know that bringing back an old TV property is dangerous territory. But when it works — either as a continuation of the original series, or a fresh take on a familiar title — it can be thrilling. Here are 10 of our favorites: five revivals with some or all of the original actors, and five reboots that started from scratch.

Amid a time-bending stretch like the one we’re still living through, listing the best TV shows of 2020 feels counterproductive, if not downright preposterous. After all, who can definitively say what did or didn’t happen this year?
My calendar states the election was held just under a month ago, and yet certain manipulative powermongers insist it’s still playing out. I could also swear J. Lo ’s unjust renunciation by the Film Academy took place months before her dazzling Super Bowl Halftime show with Shakira, and yet the record books tell me her “Hustlers” snub in January and February’s concert were just 20 days apart. And despite what you may think, Quibi premiered and shuttered in 2020.
Still, TV did play a more substantial role this year than many others. In an age of isolation and social distancing, television was a lifeboat. The family room’s big screen functioned as...

Xochitl Gomez, the young actor who recently starred in Netflix’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” reboot, has joined the cast of Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
Sam Raimi, whose highlights include the Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” trilogy, is directing the sequel, which sees Benedict Cumberbatch return as the Sorcerer Supreme.
Plot details, as what has become de rigueur for Marvel entries, are being kept under wraps, so it’s unclear what role Gomez will be playing in the comic book sequel. Benedict Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also expected to reprise their characters from 2016’s “Doctor Strange.” Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is also joining the follow-up.

If you grew up during the 80s and 90s, you probably have fond memories of The Baby-Sitters Club. In fact, the theme song is probably playing in your head right now. Originally introduced as a series of books written by Ann M. Martin, the franchise eventually spawned a TV series and a movie. Although younger audience may not have been familiar with The Baby-Sitters Club and it’s glory days, that recently changed when Netflix released a reboot of the series. The new show maintains the essence of the original while also incorporating elements that are relevant to today’s society. Although

Growing up, I never saw anyone who looked like me. Not in school, not at home, and certainly not on television or in theaters. And I’m sure many people with disabilities can say the same thing. We all know the statistics, that in spite of 15 percent of the world’s population having a disability only about two percent of television and movies actually contain a disabled character. Factor in each subsequent generation before that, and two percent sounds like an improvement! All of this is to say that, as a kid, I latched on to the few characters who had anything passing for a disability, whether that was Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise) in “Forrest Gump” or, New York-based child baby-sitter, Stacey McGill.

Iron Man VR on PlayStation VR got some thinking about other superheroes who need their own VR games.
“Iron Man VR is a game for the PS4’s PlayStation VR headset that lets you climb into Tony Stark’s armor. While modern VR gaming is still in its infancy, there’s no denying that superhero games are an attractive use of the technology. Who hasn’t wanted to slip into the leotard of their favorite comic book heroes (metaphorically) and really feel what being superhuman is like?”

1. “The Baby-Sitters Club” Season 1 (available now)
Why Should I Watch? Netflix’s adaptation of Ann M. Martin’s ’90s era novels have been wooing plenty of viewers well-outside its young adult demographic — this critic included — without abandoning its most important fanbase. “The Baby-Sitters Club” is a rich, warm-hearted story about a group of middle-schoolers who band together, not only to make a little extra money and give themselves an excuse to hang out, but to provide a much-needed service for parents; the titular baby-sitters have an earnest yet relaxed investment in the kids they care for, and that same casually compassionate attitude buoys the series itself to lovable heights. Adult viewers may come for a pastel-dipped piece of nostalgia, but they — and younger audiences — will stick around for a savvy, inclusive, and rewarding update on “Bsc.”

"Good afternoon, Baby-Sitters Club." Well before Netflix's current release and even the 1995 flick staring the decade's most ubiquitous young actresses, Rachael Leigh Cook and Larisa Oleynik, there was Ann M. Martin's anthology. A key part of most '80s and '90s kids' adolescences, the 131-book collection, debuting in 1986, told the tales of a group of resourceful middle school-aged entrepreneurs from the fictional town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut and invokes such nostalgia that even the sight of those instantly recognizable block letters can leave us feeling some type of way. That's because long before we were adults proclaiming ourselves to be Carries and Charlottes or...

Adapting any book to screen can be a complicated task, but when it is a book series that consists of more than 200 stories, the process seems that much more arduous. And that is exactly what Rachel Shukert, showrunner of Netflix’s “The Baby-Sitters Club,” was facing when she signed on to translate author Ann M. Martin’s classic coming-of-age franchise.
First published in 1986, “The Baby-Sitters Club” series of novels ranges from the original 131-book series about a group of teenage girls who started the titular baby-sitting club in their neighborhood to earn some extra money to subsequent spinoffs and special volumes that included almost 40 mystery titles, half a dozen in the single character “Portrait Collection” series, a turn-of-the-millennium “Friends Forever” subset, 15 “Super Special” aka super-sized novels, and a prequel. (Not to mention the graphic novels and “Little Sisters” spinoff that eventually followed.)
