The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

Here's what you must contend with if you choose to suffer the prolonged agony of Robin Hood: Foremost, there are so many middle-aged, sword-wielding white men with beards that it takes a full half hour to separate the participants. Second, this Robin Hood has nary a sense of humor; a glum, self-indulgent two-and-a-half hour epic mish-mash warrants at least a few scenes of reprieve. No such luck in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, which shares that in common with its lead. What happened to the Merry in the Merry fucking Men?
Third, why doesn't Russell Crowe -- a good but often miscast actor -- just give in to his public perception and play the villain more often? How much better would he be as a villain instead of a sulking, withdrawn, dour, overweight, self-serious, narcissistic hero? (He'd have been much better as the Sheriff of Nottingham in the original conception of this movie.

Imprisoned rapper Gucci Mane has been hit with a lawsuit for allegedly failing to perform two concerts in Pennsylvania last year. Bosses at Marshall Productions and Rockstar Entertainment have filed papers against the hip-hop star, real name Radric Davis, and two business partners, claiming the trio booked two shows in Pittsburgh - and took cash deposits for both - even though they knew that legal restrictions on Mane's travel would prevent the gigs from taking place.
The concert promoters claim the rapper's reps took two deposits of $13,750 to secure his appearance at shows last August. Parole restrictions stemming from a 2005 felony assault prevented the rap star from leaving his home in Georgia at the time.
Violations of his parole agreement eventually resulted in Gucci Mane's arrest and incarceration in November 2009. In the legal papers, filed in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Marshall Productions' William Marshall and and Derrick Brown of Rockstar Entertainment state,...

We take a look at the latest union of Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott, as they take Robin Hood back to basics...
What is it?
It's one of the few blockbusters this summer that's neither a sequel nor based on a comic book (or similarly lucrative source material), that's what. In fact, Robin Hood is arguably one of the hardest sells of the summer.
It looks to be doing for the Robin Hood story what Batman Begins did for the adventures of the Dark Knight. Thus, the plan here is to explore the origins of the true Robin of the Hood, rather than the lighter, more glamourised versions we're used to seeing on the big screen. As such, many of the elements you may recall from the tales of yonder aren't going to be present here. This is a gritty, down and dirty Robin Hood, and one who, from the trailers,...

Universal Pictures has released the upcoming Super Bowl TV spot/trailer for Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” on Yahoo.
The movie began development in 2007 when Universal acquired a script entitled Nottingham, depicting a heroic Sheriff of Nottingham to be played by Crowe. Director Ridley Scott’s dissatisfaction with the script led him to delay filming, and during 2008 it was rewritten into a story about Robin Hood becoming an outlaw, with the position of being Sheriff as part of the story. Scott dropped the latter notion and Nottingham was retitled to reflect the more traditional angle.
The film stars Oscar winners Russell Crowe as Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Danny Huston as King Richard, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, William Hurt as William Marshall and Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet.

Now that's a big frickin' sword! Empire has debuted the first photo from Ironclad, a medieval movie in the works from writer/director Jonathan English (of Nailing Vienna, Minotaur previously). Below you'll find a photo of James Purefoy as the Earl of Pembroke, Capt. William Marshall (a real historical character who also is appearing in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood played by William Hurt). The film is described as a "medieval Seven Samurai" about a determined group of Knights Templar who defend Rochester Castle against the tyrannical King John in the 13th century. This photo is not much to look at, but damn that sword is huge! In addition to Purefoy, Ironclad also stars Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Robert Carlyle, William Moseley, Jason Flemyng, Bob Hoskins, Pete Postlethwaite, and Kate Mara. Apparently in the film Giamatti is "in pure Shoot 'Em Up snarling-villain mode, facing off against the noble and true James Purefoy.

The first teaser posters for Robin Hood (a matching quad and one sheet) have hit the net! Starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen and Mark Strong, the Ridley Scott-directed picture is (according to the studio) a more “historically accurate” interpretation that we’ve ever seen before.
Following on from the impressive looking trailer earlier this week, these posters feel like a bit of a disappointment. Still, they are teasers so I suppose they’re not meant to be the all-singing, all-dancing one sheets I’d like them to be. Check them out below:
The story of how an archer in the service of King Richard the Lionheart became to be known as Robin Hood, the famous archer and outlaw of English Folklore.
Beginning after the Death of King Richard at the Siege of Chalus Chabrol, the film follows Robin on his rise to infamy among the English Barons...

The international trailer has landed for the Ridley Scott directed, Russell Crowe vehicle, Robin Hood. Unlike the Us teaser trailer, this latest treat features far more dialogue and action although judging from some of the epic looking footage within, I’d say we’re still in for a Robin Hood unlike any other we’ve seen before.
Either way it’s a pretty slick looking trailer, Oscar worthy? Too early to tell, but that’s definitely the vibe I’m getting. Check it out below:

Aussie site the Courier Mail has more looks from the set of “Robin Hood”, the Ridley Scott-directed, Russel Crowe-starring “re-imagining” of the Robin Hood legend. To be honest with you, the more I see of the movie, the less it looks like a “Robin Hood movie” to me. Then again, maybe Robin Hood was riding around on a horse fighting soldiers on beaches, what do I know? New pics from the film starring Crowe, a lovely Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Kevin Durand as Little John, Danny Huston as King Richard, and William Hurt as William Marshall. He’s no Sean Connery, but Danny Huston has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood film, which is still as yet titled. Huston will be portraying King Richard the Lionheart, who, in the Robin Hood legend, is away fighting in the Third Crusade and whose brother, Prince John’s malevolent exploits cause Robin Hood to take arms against the kingdom.Huston is joining a cast that already includes Russell Crowe as Robin Hood, Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Kevin Durand as Little John, and William Hurt as William Marshall.
Scott’s adaptation of the Robin Hood story has been in development since 2007 when Universal acquired the screenplay, which, at that time, told a more sympathetic story towards the Sheriff of Nottingham and was titled ‘Nottingham.’ Scott filled the director’s chair in 2008, and the screenplay was rewritten to tell a more standard Robin Hood story.

Universal Pictures has released a picture of Russell Crowe as the title character in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. USA Today has the first image of the reunion between Gladiator director and star, who looks a lot like he did as Maxiumus. The previously reported story of Crowe playing both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham have been scrapped for a more traditional retelling of the famous narrative.
Here the official plot synopsis:
The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to...

Hurt is reportedly being signed to play William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke, one of the most powerful men in all of Europe. The veteran actor joins Oscar winners Russell Crowe (Robin Hood/Sheriff of Nottingham) and Cate Blanchett (Maid Marian)on the film, which will be an origin story of the famed character. This movie is looking better and better each time we receive an update about it. Hurt is a great character actor and will match up nicely with Crowe and Blanchett. Okay, so the cast is almost complete, but the title of the new Robin Hood film is still up in the air!
Ridley Scott is re-teaming with his favorite actor Russell Crowe for the film. And so far, Crowe is set to play Robin Hood while Cate Blanchett is going to star as Maid Marian.
Now, William Hurt joins the production as William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke. He's supposed to be a historical figure known as one of the best jousters of the era!
As far as the Merry Men? Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand, and Alan Doyle are set to co-star.
The film is written by Brian Helgeland, Oscar winner for "L.A. Confidential."
The production is filming right now in the U.K.

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood has added so many people that we've actually fallen a bit behind in reporting them all. Shortly after Cate Blanchett came aboard as Maid Marian, the film added Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Alan Doyle as Alan-a-Dale, Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Kevin Durand as Little John, and Bronsen Webb as someone named Jimoen.
Deserving its own mention is my favorite casting (so far) -- Vanessa Redgrave as Eleanor of Aquitaine. I think she's possibly the only actress who can be as formidable in Eleanor's crown as Katharine Hepburn.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that William Hurt is joining up as William Marshall (or Marshal if you keep the historic spelling), a man described as "the greatest knight who ever lived" by his contemporary, Stephen Langton. He rose from obscurity to become a knight, who made his living in jousting tournaments a'la The Knight's Tale.

The cast for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood - the film formerly known as Nottingham - has added Oscar winner William Hurt, who will play William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Marshall was one of the best jousters of his day, which makes me smirk, holding in a quick but powerful laugh.
Hurt joins an altogether enviable group of actors, including Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Vanessa Redgrave, and Mark Strong, who had one of the better years of any actor in 2008. Scott's the outsider of the group, at least when it comes to Academy Awards. Counting Scott's three nominations as a director, those other five names have 21 Oscar nominations and four wins between them.
Perhaps to your surprise, Hurt has four of those nods, going back-to-back-to-back between 1986 and 1988, a feat equaled only by Crowe in the years since (2000 - 2002).

Last month we released a nearly full cast list for Ridley Scott's upcoming film, Robin Hood. And if you thought this already star-studded cast couldn't get any better, well, enter William Hurt. who's been tapped to play William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke. The Oscar-winning actor is to portray one of the most powerful men in Europe and, historically, one of the best jousters of the era. As if Russell Crowe re-teaming with Scott in the dual role of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian wasn't enough, Hurt really pushes this whole project into the realm of juggernauts. Everyone excited? As a recap, this version of Robin Hood follows Robin from his early days in King Richard's army to his return to Nottingham to his creation of a band of mercenaries who challenge the sheriff and eventually try to prevent civil war.

You think all the major roles in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood have been filled? Well then you're forgetting the massive importance of William Marshall, a.k.a. the Earl of Pembroke, a.k.a. "a servant to the Plantagenet kings and one of the best jousters of the era." Yeah, I'd never heard of him either. But William Hurt will be playing him in the movie, which means you'll at least feel the pride of an American taking his place among the Aussies and Brits taking the main roles here. THR notes that the movie just started filming, which means it won't be long before we have some set photos that give us a better idea of exactly what Ridley Scott has in mind here.
