For 15 minutes or so, Bob Marley: One Love promises to be an antidote to the usual cookie-cutter music biopic, the kind skewered by the 2007 spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Riffing back then on 2005’s Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as troubled country star Johnny Cash, Jake Kasdan’s film took aim at the whole jukebox-movie industry, featuring a solemn lead character who “has to think about his entire life before he goes on stage.”
Spoiler alert: this kind of thing also happens in One Love. But Reinaldo Marcus Green’s film promises so much more, things like real-world politics, emotional complexity, and serious danger. In other words, an alternative to the usual narrative of the greenhorn who dreams big, lives that dream, and then gets sucker-punched by The Man. Gradually, though, the realization dawns that we’re being sold a pup. As Led Zeppelin might say,...

Peaky Blinders actor Kingsley Ben-Adir dons dreadlocks and speaks in a Jamaican patois to play a reggae legend in the latest trailer for Bob Marley: One Love, which dropped Tuesday.
The biopic has Marley overcoming adversity, including a failed assassination attempt, to rise to musical fame with a message of love and unity in dangerous times. “There’s a war going on. How I can bring peace? I can’t even get peace for myself,” a fretting Marley says at one point in the trailer.
The movie, based on real events, recounts a failed attempt to murder Marley in his home in Kingston, Jamaica, which only drove the reggae legend to double down on his mission to unify a divided nation with revolutionary music.
Produced in partnership with the Marley family, Bob Marley: One Love also stars Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, the wife of the music superstar. “Sometimes the...

Paramount Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for “Bob Marley: One Love,” its upcoming biopic about the Jamaican singer and songwriter that’s expected to be released in 2024.
The trailer starts as a celebration of Marley and his legacy, as portrayed by “Peaky Blinders” and “The Oa” star Kingsley Ben-Adir. It jumps between Marley playing to concert after concert of adoring fans as the legendary artist’s music plays in the background. As the trailer continues it takes on a darker tone as it delves into Jamaica’s civil war during the 1970s.
It all comes to a head right before the One Love Peace Concert. As someone off screen asks Marley why he’s going to return to Jamaica after there was an assassination attempt on him and his wife, Ben-Adir as Marley calmly replies, “My life is not important to me. My life is for people.”

Kingsley Ben-Adir is hitting a high note as Bob Marley.
After portraying Malcolm X in “One Night in Miami” and showcasing his musical chops in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Barbie,” Ben-Adir takes on the life and legacy of reggae icon Marley in “Bob Marley: One Love.” The musical biopic is helmed by “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green, with a script written by Emmy winner Terence Winter along with Zach Baylin and Frank E. The tagline reads: “One man. One message. One revolution. One legend.”
Marley’s son Ziggy Marley is a producer on the film, with “Captain Marvel” actress Lashana Lynch playing his wife Rita Marley. Michael Gandolfini, James Norton, Tosin Cole, Anthony Welsh, Umi Myers, and Nadine Marshall also star.

Music biopics are notoriously tough to pull off, and that goes double for musicians who died tragically young, but the team behind the upcoming Bob Marley biopic "Bob Marley One Love" have given it their all, and the results look pretty impressive. "Peaky Blinders" star Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley, the Jamaican reggae singer, Rastafarian, and political activist who rocketed to global fame before dying from cancer at the age of 36. Marley has become an emblem of Jamaican culture and reggae music, forever leaving his imprint on international pop culture, and now we're going to get to see his story told dramatically on the big screen.
At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, attended by /Film's Ben Pearson, Bob's son Ziggy Marley took to the stage to introduce new footage from the film, which was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green ("King Richard") based on a screenplay by "King Richard" scribe Zach Baylin.

Paramount’s upcoming Bob Marley biopic has found its leading man.
After an extensive, yearlong and globe-spanning search, Kingsley Ben-Adir, fresh off of playing Malcolm X in “One Night in Miami,” has been tapped to portray a different icon, the music legend credited with popularizing reggae music.

The studio has not disclosed specific plot details, but the film will focus on Marley’s life and career. For Cedella Marley, keeping her father's legacy alive is a full-time job.
The daughter of music legend Bob Marley is the author of multiple children's books inspired by her dad, the designer of a fashion brand named for the Wailers album "Catch a Fire," and CEO of Tuff Gong International, an organization he founded to support creativity. She's also worked with her brothers to launch Marley's Beverage Company, featuring a new line of relaxation beverages. The aptly named Marley's Mellow Mood recently kicked off Marley's Music Uprising, a competition that will offer the winning band (La's PapaFish) a recording session with Stephen Marley at Tuff Gong Studio in Kingston, Jamaica.
We caught up with the entrepreneur and mom of three to chat about her recent projects and famous family.
Why did you want to start Marley's Mellow Mood?
Our father was an entrepreneur. And he was also a farmer.

In a revealing interview with the NY Daily News, Hitch discusses her own mother's relationships with women and she vaguely describes having an affair with a woman that some believe to have been her former roommate, the late Amy Winehouse. Hitch declared, “I have a personal belief that everybody’s gay.”

Chicago – Clocking in at a shade under two-and-a-half hours, Kevin Macdonald’s hugely informative yet leisurely paced documentary plays like the condensed version of a top-drawer TV miniseries. There’s even enough fade-outs for one to mentally insert commercial breaks. Yet for music buffs, the need to see this footage on the big screen undoubtedly justified its theatrical release.
As someone only vaguely familiar with Bob Marley, I found myself completely captivated by this picture, which tells the story of a life purely through in-depth interviews and archival footage. Though the film perhaps could’ve benefitted from more concert footage, the context in which the footage is presented is always enlightening, and at times, very moving. Marley’s messages of peace and unity resonate not only through the power of music, but through the methods in which the filmmakers explore the origins of Marley’s beliefs.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

Cedella Marley has revealed that she's in no rush to watch the well-received documentary about her father Bob made by Oscar-winner Kevin Macdonald, out today on DVD.
Bob Marley - a legend both in his native Jamaica, and around the world
"There's so much family stuff in there," she admitted to HuffPostUK on her recent trip to London. "I think I might just need to sit down later, take my time and try to absorb it all."
Cedella is full of praise for the labour-of-love project, titled simply Marley, calling it "the most comprehensive yet, in terms of who spoke about what. I think everyone was prepared to speak the truth as they saw it, even if it contradicted the accepted history.
"But there was stuff in there, that I'd never heard about, stuff that's going to be really hard to take in... "

The herb induced gospel of reggae and Rastafarianism would never have become the international phenomenon it has if it wasn’t for the impassioned genius of Robert Nesta Marley, better known to the world as Bob. Under that dreaded mass that consumed his scrawny face, his mind worked overtime to, quite literally, bring peace and unity to the world, while his body decayed in shadow until it was too late to save. Director Kevin Macdonald has done an admirable job of piecing together Marley’s life with what little early material and incomprehensible interview footage he had to work with. Marley shows deep respect for the musician who gave a voice to the struggling nation of Jamaica while remaining surprisingly honest about his short comings as a father and husband.
