Often it feels like there are not enough ghost stories based horror films these days, but then when you think about it we’ve had Insidious, Sinister and The Conjuring just to name a few. I’m not sure why I feel there needs to be more but this could be a sign that things need to be shaken up a bit. Saying that though I’ll be reviewing Soulmate soon which is a good old-fashioned ghost story that gets so much right, so most importantly these films just need to be good. Haunter looks to add a little something different to the mix with the question, do ghosts realise they are actually dead?

While most indie horror films are interested in getting you as much "bang for the buck" as humanly possible, there are always a few filmmakers out there who insist on using the horror genre as a vehicle for plain, simple, and sometimes painfully "relatable" stories about the frank difficulties of normal life. (Check out films like Marianne, Absentia, or Citadel for a few great examples.) Simply put: we're all afraid of sharks, stalkers, and monsters; that's the easy stuff. So kudos to the independent filmmakers who make horror films and suspense thrillers about "normal" fears like loss, regret, betrayal, and isolation.
Already it sounds like Greg White's sanguine film Separation is a downbeat and miserable affair, but it's actually quite a calm, confident, and gradually engaging thriller about one married couple, their mysterious daughter, and a handful of hidden secrets that feel a bit random at the outset, but...

Given that she spent a healthy chunk of her early career hunting down supernatural and other mysteries, we imagine Gillian Anderson will feel right at home joining the cast of Richie Mehta’s new film I’ll Follow You Down. The movie, which already features Haley Joel Osment, Rufus Sewell and Victor Garber, concerns a scientist (Sewell) who vanishes without trace during a business trip. The incident leaves his wife (Anderson) and his son shocked and saddened. But then, years later, the son (now played by Osment) and his grandfather (Garber) make a startling discovery. They invent New Coke! No, they actually just find information that points to Sewell still being among the living.Mehta wrote the script and is currently cranking the cameras in Toronto with a cast that also features Catherine Bruhier, John Paul Ruttan, Sarah Manninen and Rupinder Nagra, who starred in Mehta’s first film, Amal.

Late last year, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sarah Polley made a 2-minute short film called The Heart, for The Heart and Stroke Foundation's healthy living campaign. Starring Sarah Manninen and Jean-Michel Le Gal, the film follows a "woman through phases of her life" as she "explores the chambers of her heart." Now that the short is just a few days away from release -- slated to air on the Canadian station CTV during the Academy Award ceremony -- The Globe and Mail reports that Polley is removing her name from the title credits after the discovery that it's being used to promote Becel margarine.
It is not clear what, if any, knowledge Polley had about Becel's ties to the foundation (the Globe says they commissioned the film), but according to her press release, she "... was thrilled, as I was proud to be associated with the work of this incredible organization." "However, I...

Toronto -- Sarah Polley's heart just isn't in it. The Canadian actress-turned-director on Tuesday withdrew her name from "The Heart," a two-minute film she shot on female cardiac health to air this Sunday on Canadian broadcaster CTV's nationwide telecast of the Academy Awards.
Polley said she pulled her credit from the Oscar short after she learned that the project from Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation might indirectly market the Unilever brand margarine Becel.
"In December 2009, I made a film to be aired during the Academy Awards that I believed was to promote the Heart and Stroke Foundation," Polley said in a statement Tuesday.
Polley said she was initially thrilled to be associated with a film for the medical research charity. But her anti-corporate radar was raised when Polley learned that Becel commissioned the short.
"I have since learned that my film is also being used to promote a product.

At CinemaSpy we get screeners of early episodes of new television series to review. It's particularly satisfying when you get through a batch and want to see more of a show. So it was with The Line, a 15-episode Canadian-made cop drama that is currently airing on The Movie Network, Movie Central and HBO Canada.
The Line is essentially a soap opera that focuses on two dysfunctional detectives, Max (Ron White) and Donny (Daniel Kash), and the people whose lives they touch. Both men have messed-up love lives and their complicated personal relationships interweave with other elements of The Line's plot to produce a tangled, ongoing story that is atypical of conventional police procedural shows.
Max lives with his wife Karen (Yanna McIntosh) but their relationship is crumbling under the weight of their ethnic differences. Hence, he regularly has sex with burned-out legal aid lawyer Jayne Huxley (Sharon Lawrence...
