Gregoire Melin’s Kinology, the Paris-based company handling Leos Carax’s and Mia Hansen-Love’s next films, has added a string of ambitious new films from a mix of emerging and seasoned directors.
Kinology has launched sales on “A Girl’s Room,” a stylish psychological thriller directed by Finnish up-and-coming helmer Aino Suni; “The Divide,” a stars-packed film by French director Catherine Corsini (“Three Worlds”); “Third Grade” by veteran director Jacques Doillon (“Ponette”); and “Morning Calm,” a director-driven sprawling thriller by Denis Dercourt. If you follow me on Twitter or know me at all, you probably know that I’m not really a fan of romantic movies. That’s not to say I hate them, I’m just very choosy about which ones I watch because I know I’m not going to like the majority of them… However by being part of the Fantasia Festival meant that I would give A Mermaid In Paris a chance. I know the festival is full of original and entertaining films, and this one looked no different.

The beguiling and the deadly walk hand and hand in the myth of the mermaid - and Mathias Malzieu retains both elements as he offers a fishy twist on romantic comedy in A Mermaid In Paris. His quirky offering, which boasts handsome production and costume design, bears the strong influence of French fantasy film director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, with every detail finessed - from rubber ducks to T-shirts.
Lula (Marilyn Lima) is the mermaid in question, heard before she is seen - singing her song in the Seine and luring unsuspected men to their deaths in the water. Moored near her killzone is the Flowerburger barge - a restaurant that has a hidden club below decks, accessed only if you know the right phrase. It's there that the rather lonely and unlucky in love Gaspard (Nicolas Duvauchelle) - the son of the owner - croons for the punters of an evening.

Gaspard (Nicolas Duvauchelle) has lived his entire life in pursuit of fulfilling a promise from his grandmother that he’s never quite understood. She was the matriarch of a family that reached well past blood to encompass a group of artistic “Surprisers” who gathered at her famed Flowerburger—an underground speakeasy of sorts doubling as a safe haven for anti-fascist disruptors during the war where song and dance led to poems and love. With a wealth of important Parisian history many will never know, she made certain to document everything that occurred via an impossible pop-up book bestowed upon her grandson before her death. He took it willingly and excitedly because he wanted to grow up and continue her legacy. Life just hasn’t yet allowed Gaspard to do so.
And he’s lovesick as a result. He’ll say it’s a result of multiple singer girlfriends that haven...

2015 will see two new Pixar animated features come to theaters and win over audiences worldwide. But while this year looks like it’s going to be a profitable one for the studio behind films that have become pillars of computer animation, 2014 was a quiet year for them. As a result, other studios like WB and “The Lego Movie” or Dreamworks and the second installment in the “How to Train Your Dragon” series had much less competition during most of the year.
Another great side effect of this Pixar-less year was the attention given to much smaller features with inventive stories and handcrafted visual artistry. Among these, traditional animation soared with the release of new films from acclaimed animators like Bill Plympton, Cartoon Saloon's Tomm Moore, and Studio Ghibli’s Isao Takahata, as well as Signe Baumane’s mind-bending feature debut. There were also 3D animated alternatives from two pairs of French filmmakers, Hélène Giraud & Thomas Szabo and Stéphane Berla & Mathias Malzieu.
From the 20 films competing to be nominated as Best Animated Feature at the 87th Academy Awards, only 6 were created using 2D animation and only one, Laika’s “The Boxtrolls,” represented the stop-motion technique. But despite being outnumbered by works done solely using digital tools, these films prove that intimate storytelling and laborious work can certainly be more rewarding than following the industry’s conventions.
Since these films and their creators often don’t have the resources that major studios do for promotion, several of them might have slipped through the cracks. However, they are worthy of as much, or even more praise as any big budget animated feature released last year. Here is a list of 8 of them that deserve a wider audience. Many of them are visual wonders that challenge our imagination in heartwarming, intelligent, and even provocative ways. Furthermore, two of them managed to become Academy Award nominees against the odds.

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart Blu-Ray Review
There are few movies that are as wild, original, and filled with soul as Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, and the only problem with that is that it’s going to make you think someone else directed it. (He didn’t.)
Adapted by Mathias Malzieu from his own bestselling novel and the gold-selling album by his band Dionysos, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is a magical story that feels like a new breed of myth, and it comes to you through brilliant animation.
Born on the coldest day in the history of the Earth, Jack’s heart is frozen solid. To save his life, midwife Madeleine grafts a tiny cuckoo clock into his chest to take its place. Everything will be fine, she tells him, so long as he follows three rules in order to keep things running smooth – He can never touch the clock’s workings,...

Romance is perhaps the most coveted of the storyteller’s tools, one that can connect with anyone, yet open to an infinite number of perspectives, styles and genres. French filmmakers Stephane Berla and Mathias Malzieu have brought Malzieu’s own novel to life in the new computer animated feature film adaptation of Jack And The Cuckoo Clock Heart. Having co-directed the film and adapted his novel into the screenplay, Malzieu is something of a renaissance man, as he’s also the lead singer for the French rock band Dionysos. This plays a crucial role in the development of the film’s fantastical, poetic nature and musical fluidity.
Jack And The Cuckoo Clock Heart, also known as The Boy With the Cuckoo Clock Heart, tells the story of Jack, a boy born on the coldest day in the history of the world. So cold, in fact, that his heart is so cold and stone hard,...

This is a fantastic trailer for a jaw-droppingly amazing looking animated film called Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. I don't know how I had never heard of this before, but wow! The movie seems to have kind of a Tim Burton vibe to it with its circus-like atmosphere, beautiful animation, and music.
The film is based on a novel written by Dionysos’s lead singer, Mathias Malzieu. He also directed the film and worked with music video director Stéphane Berla to bring it to life.
The story revolves around Jack "whose heart was frozen on the day of his birth and replaced with a cuckoo-clock. Because of the delicate apparatus keeping him going, he lives by only three rules: never touch the hands of the clock; control his temper at all times; and most heartbreakingly, never fall in love. Any massive emotion could stop his clock and thus end his life.

French Animated Pic 'Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart' to Get North American English-Language Release
When it comes to animated films, most people here in the U.S. think of the big names: Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, Blue Sky, perhaps Japan's Studio Ghibli. Of course, there's great animation coming out of studios around the world. Think Oscar-nominated "The Triplets of Belleville" or "Ernest & Celestine," not to mention such anime classics as "Ghost in the Shell." But most of those films either don't come to the states, or they don't get much play because they're not in English. In light of that, the multi-platform entertainment company Shout! Factory is bringing popular animated picture "Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart" to North American audiences--dubbed in English. The 2013 French film, directed by Mathias Malzieu and Stéphane Berla, is adapted from Malzieu's novel and a best-selling album by his band, Dionysos. It tells the story of a young boy with a clockwork heart who is forbidden from falling in love and.

A total amount of €4,995,000 ($6,678,685) is to be distributed in the fund’s inaugural call.
The next call for projects closes on 28 June. The final call for 2013 opens from Sept 1 and closes on Oct 25. Another €5 million will be divided among applicants in both remaining calls.
Sitting alongside the Belgian Tax Shelter, the new fund is bound to boost the region’s appeal for coproduction and inward investment yet further. There’s no doubt ‘Fifth Element’ director Luc Besson is a busy man, but even though he’s well into in pre-production with his upcoming big budget live action sci-fi actioner ‘Lock Out,’ it seems he’s still found time to dabble in his other fascination….animation. Not only is he producing The Monster in Paris, he’s also developing a 3-D movie titled Le Mécanique du Coeur (The Mechanics of the Heart) based on the novel by Mathias Malzieu. Its early days pegging down what we’re going to get with Mechanics, but we’re definitely getting a Gothic ‘Nightmare Before Christmas” type vibe (No bad thing, so long as there no singing!) off the artwork we’ve just turned up. Mechanics of the Heart is due for release in 2011. See the artwork full size at the link. Synopsis: Edinburgh, 1874. Jack was born on the coldest day of the...
