Issa López can't stop winning.
Season 4 of the hit HBO series "True Detective" was a massive risk, with show creator Nic Pizzolatto stepping back after three seasons to collect executive producer checks and whine on Instagram, while López took the series into a completely different direction with "Night Country" and navigated her predecessor's pettiness with the utmost grace. The risk paid off, big time, as "Night Country" became the most-watched season of the series yet, as well as the highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes. So it's no surprise that HBO has wisely decided to renew the acclaimed drama for a fifth installment, with López returning for a new season under a multiyear overall deal with the company. Meaning, she will not only create season 5 of "True Detective," but she will also provide additional projects exclusive to HBO and the Max streaming platform. Excellent news for everyone who loves quality TV! Well, maybe not this guy. But he can go and suck on his sour grapes instead. For the rest of us, there's reason to be happy today as HBO has renewed True Detective for a fifth season, and has Night Country showrunner Issa López returning to oversee it again.
Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the story of troubled police officers investigating a confounding crime at a research station just outside a tiny, frozen Alaskan town as it plunges into weeks of darkness, has become the most watched season of the show and received plenty of critical praise to boot.
As for what the new season might cover, there's no word yet on whether it'll continue the story of Night Country or go the more familiar True Detective anthology route of a new setting and characters.

HBO’s officially renewed True Detective for season five. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, was the most-watched season overall, drawing in 12.7 million viewers. It was also the first season that focused on women in the leading roles, and the first with Issa López in charge as writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer.
Showrunner Issa López will return in the same capacity for season five, and has just signed a new multiyear overall deal with HBO. The deal means López will create new content, including season five, for HBO and Max.
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” stated Issa López. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true.

Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the show, but once the third season wrapped up, his HBO deal expired and he signed a new (short-lived) deal with FX. HBO retained the ownership rights to True Detective, and with Pizzolatto gone they were interested in bringing in someone who had “a fresh voice with a different...

Nic Pizzolatto, the original creator of HBO’s “True Detective” franchise, published a bizarre Instagram post amid controversy generated in the aftermath of the show’s fourth season finale.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he wasn’t creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show – and he repeatedly let it be known that he wasn’t a fan of how the show was going in his absence. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season, and despite Pizzolatto’s objections, this season was able to draw in enough viewers that it became the most-watched season of the show, with Deadline reporting that it averaged 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, with 3.2 million checking out the season finale on the day of its release. So it’s no surprise to hear that López might be coming back for more True Detective.

Now that True Detective: Night Country has wrapped up its six-episode run, Nic Pizzolatto is taking another jab at the anthology series he created.

Original “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto is once again making headlines for seemingly bashing the show’s fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country,” which was the first not to be created by Pizzolatto himself. “Night Country” hailed from Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes. Pizzolatto was still an executive producer on the show, but he distanced himself from “Night Country” during its run and generated significant backlash after reposting criticisms of the finale to his Instagram story.
Pizzolatto did not provide any personal commentary on the “True Detective: Night Country” finale. Instead, he chose to share negative reactions from other people who slammed the new season as “disrespectful and insulting” and a “hot mess.” He reposted several fans who were outraged with the finale and its “lazy, nonsensical” resolutions and claimed that Lopez had “butchered” his original writing given the connections between “Night Country” and the first season of “True Detective.

It’s Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell), the heartbroken killer of “True Detective: Night Country,” who gets the famous line from the series (and its beloved first season): “Time is a flat circle.”
He’s talking about a lot of things — most explicitly, the spirit of Annie K. (Nivi Pederson) that he believes lives in the ice caves around them — but he’s also talking about “True Detective” and the very nature of episodic storytelling itself. Stories are told and retold and repackaged and remixed, genres interwoven, resolutions reached.
And “True Detective: Night Country” did a damn good job with all of that.
Following now-deleted comments from series creator Nic Pizzolatto on social media, audiences learned early on that not only did Pizzolatto not actually have a hand in the creation of the fourth season of the HBO series, but he didn’t...

Despite being credited as an executive producer, Pizzolatto made it clear on social media that he had no part in season 4’s writing. True Detective Season 4 is the only season which is not created by him—who wrote every episode of the first three seasons.
This season, titled Night Country, is helmed by Issa López. She took on the role of director and co-writer for all six episodes of the new season. Now, the director of True Detective Season 4 disclosed the true motivation behind McConaughey’s memorable dialogue. This revelation came after the original writer (Pizzolatto) criticized her publicly.

Simmering teen angst meets social awareness in “Red Flags,” an Atresplayer Original created by award-winning author and playwright Nando López, whose novel “The Age of Anger” was previously adapted for television by Lucía Carballal (“Locked Up”) and backed by The Mediapro Studio (“The Head”) and Atresmedia TV (“Money Heist”).
The project features within the second annual Next From Spain Sessions part of the Berlin Film Festival’s Berlinale Series Market, providing a first look at anticipated Spanish-language programming from industry heavy hitters that include the series producers Atresmedia TV and Zeta Studios.
“’Red Flags’” is a teen drama that portrays with honesty, and without taboos or paternalism, the emotional life of Generation Z,” Miguel García Sánchez, sales director at Atresmedia, told Variety.
“The series fearlessly explores the everyday realities of four friends, delving into their experiences of loneliness, interpersonal interactions and their strong fellowship created through social networks,” he continued.

A whole lot of crime buffs tuned in to see whether Danvers and Navarro would solve the mysterious deaths of those eight naked scientists.
HBO on Monday said the season finale of the anthology’s fourth season attracted 3.2 million cross-platform viewers, marking a Sunday viewing season high for the drama that starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
What’s more, the six episodes that were the brainchild of showrunner/executive producer Issa López now rank as the most-watched season of the anthology series that first kicked off in 2014. The series is so far averaging 12.7 million cross-platform viewers.
HBO says Sunday’s finale performed 55% higher than last season’s finale, while the series as a whole has remained the top title on Max since its Season 4 debut.

This article contains spoilers for the "True Detective: Night Country" finale.
When "True Detective" aired back in 2014, one of the things that made it so darkly alluring was the folk and cosmic horror element. One of the most salient examples of this was the spiral symbol, which was first seen tattooed on the back of murder victim Dora Lange in the pilot episode. Alas, as the season went on, all we learned about this mysterious motif was that it was somehow tied to the cult responsible for Lange's murder and an ongoing child trafficking operation in Southern Louisiana. That and it seemed to symbolize Rust Cohle's (Matthew McConaughey) famous "Time is a flat circle" line.
After this, show creator Nic Pizzolatto largely ignored the spiral, aside from a brief mention in season 3 of the show. But then, Mexican filmmaker Issa López took over as showrunner, and in 2023, the trailer...

Warning: We're in the Night Country now. This article contains spoilers for the "True Detective" season 4 finale.
All throughout this latest season of "True Detective," writer/director Issa López has hammered home the point that "Night Country" is meant to be a direct sequel to season 1. Ever since, the show's notoriously conspiracy-hunting fans have been on the hunt for clues and references and Easter eggs, any of which could plausibly give us amateur sleuths the inside scoop on how everything would ultimately wrap up. The Tuttle connection with Tsalal Station, the Travis Cohle namedrop, the recurring spiral motif, and even the finale's "Time is a flat circle" callback have provided endless amounts of ammunition for fan theories and speculation run rampant.
But, just like officers Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) and Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) realized by the end of the episode, maybe we've been asking the wrong questions all along.

This post contains major spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
"True Detective: Night Country" isn't afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve. Episode 2 saw new showrunner Issa López borrow directly from David Fincher's "Seven," in which a presumed corpse suddenly wakes up with a jolt, making for the biggest jump scare in the director's 1995 crime thriller masterpiece. In "Night Country," this moment is echoed when the frozen body of a scientist awakens while still immersed in the ice, shocking police gathered around the horrific scene.
But Fincher isn't the only director López borrowed from to create "Night Country" and its eerie, haunting atmosphere. In fact, the fourth season of "True Detective" is notable for its wide array of inspirations, which span everything from John Carpenter's horror classic "The Thing" to the movie that established Jodie Foster herself as a true dramatic force, "The Silence of the Lambs.

[This story contains major spoilers from the True Detective: Night Country finale.]
True Detective: Night Country winked and nodded to the HBO crime anthology’s original iteration all season long. But perhaps never more overtly than in the finale, which conjured up the franchise’s most indelible phrase: “Time is a flat circle.”
In the sprawling episode, viewers finally learn the answers to some of the biggest mysteries littered throughout Night Country, including this big one: What question should we have been asking all along? Turns out, it’s not “Who or what killed these men?” But instead: “Who knows who killed Annie K?”
By the end of the finale, it’s revealed the two cases are completely linked: The scientists killed Annie in an act straight out of Lord of the Flies, and Annie’s community — many of them women who worked at the research station — rose up and killed the scientists in kind. The women explain their actions in a...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Part 6,” the season finale of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” now streaming on Max.

Note: The following story discusses spoilers for the “True Detective: Night Country” finale.
“True Detective: Night Country” wrapped up plenty of loose ends with its finale on Sunday, but unlike its preceding seasons, the Alaska-set mystery didn’t culminate with a clear-cut ending that answered all the mystery’s questions, nor with the perpetrator of the inciting violence going to jail.
While the finale built on the season’s intensity with a dramatic foot chase and fight, creator and showrunner Issa López opted for a more subtle conclusion that gave detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) enough satisfaction to “walk away quietly.”
“I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes, which is part of why I’m doing this job now, and the best stories of Sherlock Holmes, the ones I love the most, are the ones where he finds the killer, and decides to simply walk away quietly,...

Here, creator/showrunner Issa López — who came to the anthology after the writing and directing the award-winning Mexican film Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven) — talks about how she first broke the story about the men in the research station, who represented the drama’s moral center, and what it was like to work with Foster and Reis.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains light spoilers for “True Detective” Season 4.]
The “corpsicle,” as it’s been dubbed since “Night Country” author Issa López first wrote the scene, is a shocking sight to behold. Twisted naked bodies, frozen in ice, have been carved from their original resting place and plopped at the center of a hockey rink to thaw. How did they die? Why are they naked? Who — or what — did this to them? As the ice melts, secrets spill out and the dead’s last moments gain gruesome clarity. Frostbite blackens their extremities. Teeth marks cover their skin. One is bleeding from the ears. Another is missing the fingers he’d used to claw out his own eyes.
Despite its vividly unique rendering, the corpsicle is still strangely familiar. Here are these dead naked men, ornately displayed by natural elements, unable to shield themselves from the discerning eyes of the detectives investigating their demise. You can’t help but stare,...

"True Detective: Night Country," the fourth season of HBO's hugely popular series, had a lot to go up against. For one, it was the first season not helmed by show creator Nic Pizzolatto, who has been pretty vocal about his dissatisfaction with the new season. And yet, not only has "Night Country" writer/director Issa López handled his critiques with grace and professionalism, but she's also now got the data to back up the critical claims that "Night Country" is the best season since the first. According to a report first published at Deadline, as of episode 5, "True Detective: Night Country" has officially surpassed the debut season of "True Detective" to become the series most watched season yet. The series has brought in 12.7 million viewers across platforms, surpassing the 11.9 million viewer average of season 1.

Spoilers follow.
"True Detective: Night Country" is a murder mystery. But the fourth season of the crime anthology series tells a deeper story, with new showrunner Issa López weaving a dense narrative full of symbolism and metaphor. So full of cryptic imagery is this season, that fans of the series will no doubt struggle to keep up with just what it all means, or whether it means anything at all.
Reintroducing elements from season 1 has been a big part of "Night Country," which, early in its run, confirmed it was a direct sequel to the original season. That means we've seen plenty of the ominous spiral symbol, which originated in the series pilot and represented the sinister Carcosa or Yellow King cult. In "Night Country," however, the spiral has played an even bigger role, with López seemingly set to reveal its origins by the end of her season.

Poor, wrong-headed Hank — with his broken “90 Day Fiancé” heart, and his thwarted dreams of being police chief — is dead. And by the hand of his son, Peter, no less.
At the end of “Part 5″ — the penultimate episode of creator Issa López’s “True Detective: Night Country” — investigators Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are about to defy direct orders. True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he’s not creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show. He has made his lack of involvement with the new season very clear on social media, where he even went so far as to refer to one element of the new episodes as “stupid”. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season. To find out what Lopez thought of Pizzolatto’s comments, Vulture reached out to her – and did get a response.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "True Detective: Night Country."
Showrunner Issa López had multiple sources of inspiration for "True Detective: Night Country." If you haven't clocked some of the more obvious ones by now, they include John Carpenter's Arctic horror classic "The Thing," "The Silence of the Lambs" (which gave López the idea to cast Jodie Foster as police chief Liz Danvers), and David Fincher's "Seven," from which the new showrunner borrowed one particularly disturbing moment.
On top of those major touchstones, López clearly drew from her own experiences. The Mexico City native grew up with a Catholic, somewhat superstitious mother and a communist atheist father. Which, if you haven't noticed by now, is a contradiction that finds expression in how "Night Country" walks a tightrope between gritty realism and supernatural mystery.
But there's also another big influence on the new season of "True Detective": the first season.

After True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto spoke ill of True Detective: Night Country — the rebooted fourth season of his HBO show — Night Country creator Issa López offered an empathetic (if not dismayed) response. “I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. “True Detective: Night Country” is the first season of the HBO anthology series not created by Nic Pizzolatto, who up until now had a writing credit on every episode across the show’s first three seasons. The show’s fourth season, “Night Country,” hails from Issa López, whose 2017 horror movie “Tigers Are Not Afraid” served as an industry breakthrough for the writer-director. López directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the new season.
While Pizzolatto is still an executive producer on the show, he has made it quite clear on social media amid “Night Country’s” run that he is not involved in any capacity with the fourth season of the show. He allegedly commented in since-deleted social media posts that some Season 4 plot points that connect to the show’s first season are “so stupid” and told one fan, “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else.

It’s no mystery what “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto thinks of the fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country.” Yet showrunner Issa López isn’t taking Pizzolatto’s public criticisms personally.
Ten years since Pizzolatto’s anthology HBO series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson debuted, the screenwriter took to Instagram to comment on how “Night Country” connects to the first season of “True Detective,” calling it “so stupid.” Despite serving as an executive producer on “Night Country,” Pizzolatto wrote (via screenshots of the comments), “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can’t blame me.”
“Night Country” showrunner Issa López, who writes and directs all six episodes of the new season led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, told Vulture that Pizzolatto is certainly “entitled” to his beliefs.
“I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create,...

Grisly murders, strange (possibly supernatural) happenings, and more polar bears than you can count aren't the only sources of drama associated with this ongoing season of "True Detective: Night Country." You know that old axiom about how you can't please everybody? Oftentimes, that goes double and even triple for creatives who used to be involved with a particular production. Boy, howdy, do we have fresh proof of that today.
New writer, director, and showrunner Issa López has already faced more than her fair share of unwarranted hate for the newest season of the HBO series, which had fallen on hard times prior to her involvement. That was primarily thanks to two straight seasons commonly considered to be far inferior to the acclaimed debut. Even the most diehard fans of season 1 agreed that original series creator Nic Pizzolatto simply hadn't been able to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle phenomenon from 2014, though there's hardly much shame in that.

No one can accuse True Detective: Night Country of not being properly reverential of the True Detective seasons that came before it. Despite being the first season of the show not involving original creator Nic Pizzolatto, new showrunner Issa López has filled this fourth season with many references, callbacks, and Easter eggs to previous installments of the HBO crime drama anthology.
Night Country also has a solid grasp of what makes a True Detective story a True Detective story in the first place. Like seasons 1 through 3, True Detective season 4 features: two mismatched detectives, a unique American setting, a gruesome murder mystery, and a dash of the occult. While that covers just about everything, close watchers of True Detective throughout the years will notice one important element is missing: multiple timelines.

This post contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
The "True Detective: Night Country" corpsicle might just be the scariest thing on TV right now. We're three episodes into the chilling new season of HBO's bleak detective series, and the giant mass of frozen, terrified bodies only gets creepier with time. By now, the group of naked, dead scientists has mostly thawed out, dripping death all over the floor of a local hockey rink under the watchful, increasingly anxious eye of rookie cop Peter (Finn Bennett).
The corpsicle is clearly the horror centerpiece of "True Detective: Night Country," and the camera loves it. Each episode so far has been punctuated by close-up shots of the frozen faces of the doomed research team, and somehow, the jolt of adrenalized fear that accompanies the body horror reveal never quite wears off. In fact, the closer the group gets to a full thaw,...

Anyone paying any attention to the "True Detective: Night Country" discourse will surely have noticed a rift forming among viewers. Specifically, there are those who can't stop comparing the new episodes to the original 2014 season, and those who say "Night Country" should be viewed as its own thing, entirely divorced from what came before. However you feel about it, new showrunner Issa López, who replaces show creator Nic Pizzolatto, has not only been open about how influenced she was by Pizzolatto's inaugural season, but has peppered "Night Country" with homages, callbacks, and outright continuations of themes and specific narrative threads from the 2014 episodes — to the extent that "Night Country" is essentially a stealth sequel to season 1.
Thus far, the biggest link to the initial season has been the inclusion of the spiral symbol, which cropped up throughout the "Night Country" trailer. This motif appeared throughout season 1 and represented the...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “True Detective” Season 4, Episode 3, “Part 3” — the third hour of “Night Country.” Read our previous review here.]
“Be prepared,” the nurse says, as she brings Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Navarro (Kali Reis) in to see the last surviving member of the Tsalal research team. “He’s hard to look at.” And she’s right. Anders Lund (Þorsteinn Bachmann), the founder and director of the base, is a ghastly sight. His amputation stitches are still fresh. The one hand he has remaining is black and blue. Burn marks cover his face, which makes his frosted blue eyes all the more unsettling.
And if you thought the convulsions were difficult to witness, just wait until he’s completely still, sitting up, passing along messages from the great beyond.
It’s hard to say “True Detective” earns this scene as much as it needs it. Episode 3 sees the investigation hitting snag after snag: Their latest lead,...

[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of HBO’s True Detective: Night Country.]
Despite its anthological structure, there are a few constants across the True Detective franchise. One, of course, is the enlistment of high-profile actors in the titular detective roles. Another is a case tinged with supernatural mystique and intrigue, as apparent as ever before in the latest iteration, True Detective: Night Country.
But this new season, helmed by writer-creator Issa López and starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives Danvers and Navarro, deviates from the older seasons in one meaningful way: With the exception of a few flashbacks scattered throughout its six-episode run, Night Country takes place during one specific point in time.
Unlike the first few seasons, which either showcased cases across different points in time, or featured major time jumps, the story of Night Country centers on Danvers and Navarro’s attempt to figure out the mysterious deaths of the moment (also known as,...
