Richard Wright's seminal novel "Native Son," first published in 1940, is one of the most important books ever written about racism and the black experience in America. That can’t be argued. However, it has had the sad misfortune of also being extremely unlucky at the movies. There have been 2 film versions, and both of them were pretty lousy. There was the 1986 version made for PBS, which did get a brief theatrical run, with Victor Love as the lead troubled character, Bigger Thomas, and Oprah Winfrey, in one of her first film roles, as his downtrodden suffering mother ("My baby! My baby! Please suh my baby ain't meant no harm!"... or lines to that...

Here's an old Paramount Pictures memo that was in the archives of Paramount, or maybe they found it behind a desk while moving offices. The memo was written on April 13th 1987 to the head of Network Television. It gives us a look at the actors who were being considered for certain roles in the series. One of the most interesting names on the list is Wesley Snipes being considered for the role of Georgi! He was actually the frontrunner for the part. Could you imagine!
Check out a transcript of the list below and let us know what you think.

Letters Of Note have uncovered an old memo from the archives at Paramount, written on April 13th 1987 to the studio's Head of Network Television - detailing the actors being considered for the various roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It is interesting to see some of the names that were inconsideration for the cast, but didn't end up getting the part (for whatever reason). Hit the jump to see the full memo. It really could have been different; 1 alternate choice here and there, and the faces that have long been cemented in the minds of fans may have looked entirely unlike those we all are familiar with now.
I came across this archived interoffice Paramount Studios note, dated April 1987, detailing the list of actors who were, at the time, being considered for the starring roles in the then unknown (but forthcoming) Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series – my favorite in the long-running Star Trek franchise, which aired from 1987 through 1994.
Gotta love the web, right?
Anyway, I got a kick out of some of the names who were on the shortlist of actors who were going to be brought in to read for Gene Roddenberry the following week, as the memo states. For example, Yaphet Kotto was being considered for Captain Jean-Luc Picard! That would have been interesting, but I’m struggling to picture him,...

Burning up the U.K. charts and set to release their latest set of Industrial cacophony upon the U.S. comes the spunk-charged Italian act Dope Stars Inc. Earlier this year when Metropolis records signed the band, the CD Criminal Intents/Morning Star duo pack was injected virally (and violently) into the American music market creating a septicity of spawning fans. A crepuscular horde of Cyberpunk, Cybergoth, and Rivethead fans that craved fresh new vitriolic licks fresh from Rome. On July 21st Metropolis will release the digital virus once more on its awaiting fans and indeed we are not disappointed in waiting.
The opening track “Omegadrones” rips up with clawed fury to grab and pull listeners to the dance floor. The title track 21st Century Slave, like most great infectious grooves starts slow before pitching in with fevered intensity. “Digitial Warriors” is the anthem track for the internet generation pounding computer keys and combat boots.

Founded in 2003, Italian glam-cyberrockers Dope Stars Inc. are an interesting band. They have the look, sound, and track record to entitle them to a plethora of rockstar attitudes. However, after interviewing them, I discovered that they’re just like us: fans of music and horror movies. Throughout this interview it’s clear that these influences have factored into the gradual development of the band. It’s also clear that they’re just average guys, working hard to make their dreams become flesh, and to make their music become art. A few weeks ago I reviewed their forthcoming Ep release of Criminal Intents/Morning Star for Fangoria Musick (read that here). When I got it from Metropolis Records I was blown away: it was like Industrial had mated with Glam Rock in some kind of weird Kirk-on-Spock porno! I immediately got in touch with Dsi, sent like twenty emails back and forth,...
