- Known for designing gowns made of nude color net covered in crystal beads. He did this first for Marlene Dietrich, then for Marilyn Monroe, who sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" in it.
- Costume designer for two Oscar Best Picture winners All the King's Men (1949) and From Here to Eternity (1953), and three other nominees Born Yesterday (1950), The Caine Mutiny (1954) and Picnic (1955), as well as being part of the costume department for three more nominees Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), Ship of Fools (1965) and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).
