Chicago – There’s something about “Puncture” that feels like it should work. It’s easy to see why someone thought this true tale of a troubled man who realizes he has been presented with immense responsibility would make an engaging film, but the fact is that having an interesting true story doesn’t always translate to riveting drama. Despite the interesting facts of the legal and personal drama at its core, “Puncture” is surprisingly flat (no pun intended) and, even with a very-good lead performance, isn’t memorable enough to recommend.
Chris Evans does career-best work as Mike Weiss, a small-town attorney who just started a practice with his good buddy Paul Danziger (Mark Kassen). Their little firm struggles to make ends meet by taking horrible personal injury cases and occasionally getting tossed an interesting potential settlement from a buddy (Jesse L. Martin) at a major firm. Paul has...

We hope that every film is created because a writer had a story that they felt compelled to tell the world, a director who felt obligated to share his vision, and actors who were so driven by the story and opportunity that they simply could not sleep at night if they didn’t participate. It is from this fire that something wonderful, organic, and important can jump off the screen and into our lives, leaving some sort of indelible mark on us as we shuffle out of the theater.
And then there are films like Puncture.
This contrived, convoluted mess is less a movie than an erector set of sentimental gimmicks meant to make us feel without ever giving us the impetus to actually do so. A nurse (blink-and-you’ll-miss-her Vinessa Shaw) accidentally contracts AIDS but lives just long enough for us to see her bond with her adorable young children.

HollywoodNews.com: Adam and Mark Kassen’s Puncture, with a screenplay by Chris Lopata and a story by Paul Danziger and Ela Thier, is a rare film based on a true story where one cannot help but wonder if the actual nonfiction version is more interesting than what we see on the screen. The film details a true story of a suit filed by a young nurse (Vinessa Shaw) who was pricked by an HIV-contaminated needle while on the job. But the film spends less time on the legal aspects of the case than on the personal life of its lead crusader. That the film would rather be a character drama than a legal thriller is I suppose admirable, but the legal story is far more interesting than the character melodrama.

After cementing himself as a household name in 'Captain America: The First Avenger,' it seems like Chris Evans is settling in nicely to his new reputation as a leading man. Next up for Evans is the legal drama 'Puncture' which has him trading in his shield and spandex for a syringe and suit as a lawyer on the edge.
Based on a true story, 'Puncture' is about a drug abusing, hotshot lawyer (Evans) who takes a high-profile case representing a nurse who's suing her hospital. The more he learns about the case, the closer he gets to uncovering a health care conspiracy that's bigger than he ever could have imagined could put his entire firm at risk.

For those who think Chris Evans' superheroic exploits will be restricted to the 1940s, there's a surprise in store with "Puncture," which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival. Though it still involves on kind of Blue Shield, the actor plays an even unlikelier champion of the people than the scrawny Steve Rogers as Michael Weiss, a Houston attorney who made it his life's mission to introduce the Safety Point needle, a device that ensured clean needle use in hospitals, much to the chagrin of major medical manufacturers who tried to blackball its inventor from ever reaching the market. Sadly, while Weiss was clearly a gifted lawyer, it was his additional interest in needles for recreational use that kept him from ever seeing the success he deserved with the case.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:
