When it was announced that producer Elliott Kastner had succeeded in signing both Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson for the 1976 Western, "The Missouri Breaks", the project was viewed as a "can't miss" at the international box-office. This would be Brando's first film since his back-to-back triumphs in "The Godfather" and "Last Tango in Paris" and Nicholson had just won the Best Actor Oscar for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". The two Hollywood icons were actually neighbors who lived next door to each other, but they had never previously teamed for a film project. Kastner, whose prowess as a street-wise guy who used unorthodox methods to get films off the ground, had used a clever tactic to sign up both superstars: he told each man that the other had already committed to the project, when, in fact, neither had. With Brando and Nicholson aboard, Kastner hired a respected director,...

Home Video Hell is where filmic outcasts—straight-to-video, straight-to-vod, or barely released—spend eternity.
The condemned: Campin’ Buddies (2014)
The plot: Backstory-less friends Tom (Tom Lester) and Rayford (Ray Stevens) participate in an animal-capturing camping competition (bring back the biggest live bird, fish, and “varmint”) in hopes of winning a $550,000 camper bus. After an endless series of encounters with Victoria Jackson in various guises (as a woman trying to steal their money in order to win the contest herself), they fail to capture any animals, so they buy a goldfish, a parakeet, and a rabbit. They come in second place. They go home. That’s it. And even that’s a generous description, narrative-wise. Here’s the movie as embodied by a line from over halfway through: “We wasted more time here today than an Amish electrician.”
Over-the-top box copy: “Campin’ Buddies: A Tom Logan film.” Calling it ...

Canada got into the April Fools spirit by claiming to have acquired the declassified military records of the “X-Men’s” Wolverine. “Canadian supersoldier James ‘Logan’ Howlett,” as he is described in the release from the Library and Archives Canada, was born in 1882 in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada. His mother was a wealthy landowner named Elizabeth Howlett and his father was her groundskeeper Thomas Logan. “Logan’s journals provide valuable insight into his early life in Canada, including work as a miner in a British Columbia stone quarry, a fur trader for the Hudson’s Bay Company, and a homesteader in the Canadian Rockies,...

Arthur Penn’s notorious, arguably ‘revisionist’ Western The Missouri Breaks makes it to Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber, with packaging that keeps the film’s initial infamous discrepancies alive and well with star Marlon Brando’s name retaining top billing. Though it would be Brando’s last sizeable role, the film’s main protagonist is really Jack Nicholson as a matter-of-fact horse thief who runs up against a prosperous man who holds himself above the law by failing to recognize that the rest of the country’s outlying frontiers have them.
The term revisionist is problematic in reference to Penn’s film, though it attempts to make us sympathize with a villain positioned against a civilized businessman who’s nearly as irredeemable. Two wrongs don’t make a right, so if anything, Penn’s adaptation of Thomas McGuane’s script is anarchist at best. Plagued with a troubled production thanks...

In 1845 Canada, young James Howlett sees his father killed by groundskeeper Thomas Logan. The trauma activates the boy's mutation: bone claws protrude from James' hands, and he kills Logan. In his dying breath, Logan tells James that he is his real father. James flees with Logan's abused son and James' half-brother Victor Creed(A theory has also sprung up that Dog Logan from the Wolverine Origins comic may also be the future Sabertooth, and that the characters are one and the same, except for the difference of name in the movie and comic). The two survive for over a century as men in their prime, living out their violent urges together in the American Civil War and both World Wars. During the Vietnam War, Victor kills a superior after he stops a rape attempt, James defends his brother and the two are executed by firing...

In the opening montage of Gavin Hood's 2009 comic book movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine we briefly see the two brothers, James 'Jimmy' Howlett (Hugh Jackman) and Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber), using their regenerative mutant powers as soldiers during the American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and even the Vietnam War. Originally, the plan was to show Jimmy/Wolverine whipping out his bone claws and treating confederate soldiers as human pincushions. As you can see in the video below, that was toned down for a more mild take. In 2000, Bill Jemas arrived at Marvel and began a long process of pulling the company out of bankruptcy. He tapped Joe Quesada to give up running the Marvel Knights imprint and take over Marvel Comics as its Editor-in-Chief. It was a fresh beginning and break from some truly bleak creative years. There was a new atmosphere that said anything was possible which was made manifest with the launch of the Ultimate line of comics.
Sometime that year, Jemas and Quesada held a creative summit and the topic of Wolverine’s origin came up. Shrouded in mystery and misdirection, it was a tale no one dared to tell, which was catnip to Jemas, who was more interested in stirring the pot as creatively and as commercially as possible.
Although discussed with writer Paul Jenkins that year, nothing much was done about it, percolating in the background. In the spring of 2001, when I arrived,...

Scary Movie 5 will be the first in the series without leading actress Anna Faris, but the film will see the return of Charlie Sheen as Tom Logan, and now we’ve got our first look at Sheen in the new film alongside Lindsay Lohan.
We caught the first poster for Lohan’s upcoming Lifetime movie, Liz & Dick, this morning, and now the afternoon brings with it a more familiar-looking face in the young actress.
The film is thought to be focusing on Black Swan as its jumping off point, with plenty of spoofs on Paranormal Activity, 127 Hours, and more.
Despite early reports that Lohan had exited the production, we’ve got great proof now that those reports weren’t true, with the actress sharing a bedroom scene here with Mr. Charlie Sheen.

From TV to the "Scary Movie" franchise? That seems to be the route that Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan are taking to continue the reboot of their Hollywood careers.
It turns out that both celebrities have taken roles in the upcoming movie "Scary Movie 5." E! Online has the news, reporting that Sheen will reprise his role as Tom Logan, while Lohan is playing an unannounced character. We're not quite sure how either actor will fit into the movie's larger story, but we're just hoping they share some screen time together.
Malcolm Lee is directing "Scary Movie 5", and we're interested to see what he will bring to the franchise. He'll be teaming up with "Scary Movie 3" and "4" writer and director David Zucker (also responsible for the "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" franchises), who is writing and producing this film. We can only imagine what array of horror films they will...

The Weinstein Company’s fifth installment in the long-stagnant Scary Movie franchise has just upped its trash celebrity cred, as according to E!, Scary Movie 5 has just added controversial tabloid figures Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan.
If you remember (I won’t fault you if you don’t) Sheen appeared in both Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4 as the character Tom Logan, one of the many randomly assembled players in the series of loosely linked skits that comprise these films. Lohan on the other hand is rumoured to be playing an individual by the name of Heather Daltry, possibly one of three dancers who will compete for the lead in a new high school production.
Scary Movie 4 debuted way back in 2006, so the return of the series (which has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide) will mean a seven-year hiatus when number five is released...

What's Jack Nicholson's secret? Maybe it's the eyebrows, hovering like ironic quotation marks over every line reading. Maybe it's the hooded eyes, which hold the threat of danger or the promise of joviality -- you're never sure which. Same with that sharklike grin. Or maybe it's the voice, which has evolved over the years from a thin sneer to a deep rumble, but is always precisely calibrated to provoke a reaction. Put them all together, and they say: "I am a man to be reckoned with. Ignore me at your peril." Nicholson, who turns 75 on April 22, is often criticized for relying on his bag of tricks, for just showing up and doing Jack Nicholson (though indeed, he often seems to have been hired precisely for that purpose). But he's also capable of burrowing deep into a character, finding his wounded heart, and revealing the ugly truth without fear or vanity.

Charlie Sheen in talks for 'Scary Movie 5' cameo. He should drop the 'winning' schtick to truly win.
Charlie Sheen made appearances in both 2003′s and 2006′s spoof fests Scary Movie 3 and Scary Movie 4, respectively. Of course, that was a simpler time, before Charlie Sheen had truly become the Charlie Sheen we know now. But now Dimension, the studio behind the wildly successful Scary Movie franchise, confirmed to EW that Sheen is, in fact, “discussing a role” for the upcoming Scary Movie 5. But which Sheen will we see? Or want to see, for that matter?
While studio is not sure “if it’s going to be possible” to nab Sheen, who they call “a friend of the franchise,...
