Exclusive: After a grueling few months for UK film and TV producers, there are signs that the industry is starting to head back to work following twin actors and writers strikes in the U.S.
Amateur, the 20th Century terrorism thriller starring Rami Malek, will be among the first studio shoots to resume filming in London next month, sources tell Deadline.
Amateur, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, was halfway through production when the feature’s hundreds of cast, crew, and contractors were put on hiatus in July.
The film’s cast has prioritized the project ahead of other commitments they would be shooting had the strike not happened. “Productions needing lead actors back to complete means other shows and films cannot schedule starting,” said a source.
Amateur is directed by James Hawes, whose debut feature, the Anthony Hopkins vehicle One Life, has generated plenty of buzz during the fall festival season.

It may well be an unconscious impulse but the writers are directly or indirectly influenced by their socio-political millieu, even when opposing it, and you don’t need to be a Marxist to acknowledge that.
As Edward Said showed in his examination of ‘Orientalism’, or recent works showcasing the overt or covert politics of such literary figures as William Wordsworth (Jonathan Bate’s "Radical Wordsworth: The Poet Who Changed the World") and Jane Austen, politics can intrude into the poetic realm or comedies of manners — or other forms of fiction, too. And this can span the entire gamut from literary classics to pulp fiction.
The Cold War is a fitting example. As two contrasting systems of social and political organisation vied for global influence, the conflict for influencing hearts and minds underpinned the diplomatic and military manoeuvres.

One of the must-see movies of the month, Jeremy Saulnier's "Green Room" finds the "Blue Ruin" filmmaker further staking his claim as one of the most exciting genre helmers at the moment. And the director, who so far has walked his own independent path, may be taking on his first studio project. Saulnier is reportedly slated to helm "Defection" for 20th Century Fox. Based on the 1973 book "The Defection of A.J. Lewinter" by Robert Littell, but updated for the post-Edward Snowden era, the Black List approved script by Ken Nolan ("Black Hawk Down") follows an intelligence contractor who defects to North Korea, taking a mysterious bag with him, with the CIA hiring an expert trained during the Cold War to help with the case. Sounds like standard spy thriller stuff with a modern twist, but Saulnier thus far has proven that he doesn't walk the expected genre path,...

Having gotten the obligatory "Sean Bean lives" joke out of the way — I assume you can make up your own! — we can proceed to evaluating the actor's new star vehicle, Legends. I wish there were more to say. Developed by Howard Gordon (24, Homeland) from a novel by Robert Littell, it's about a veteran FBI agent named Martin Odum (Sean Bean) who has a talent for creating and inhabiting characters for use in dangerous deep-cover investigations of the sorts of organizations where traitors are tortured with battery cables. I haven't read Littell's novel, but I'm assured by fans that the writer's work tends more toward John le Carré than James Bond. The TV show is more Bond by way of 24. Instead of the retired and reluctant hero from the book, we have a craggily handsome bruiser who's handy with fists and guns. Legends makes a grand show...

TNT's "Legends" debuts August 13, and one thing is for certain about the crime series based on Robert Littell's book "Legends: A Novel of Dissimulation:" It's going to be an extraordinary showcase for star Sean Bean, the "Game of Thrones" alum who plays undercover FBI agent Martin Odum. While tackling every case, Odum changes personalities and becomes a different "legend" to solve the crime -- and every embodied legend has his own life and lifestyle. Is he crazy? Maybe. But the thrill is watching Odum question his own sanity as his transitions seamlessly into his new identities. Fortunately, Odum's costars are a bit more down to Earth, at least in theory: Crystal McGuire (Ali Larter) plays his fellow operative who has her own personal history with the mysterious guy. We interviewed Larter at Comic-Con to discuss Bean's acting, the sly complexities of her character, and whether "Legends" is crazier than Larter's most melodramatic movie,...

TNT has green-lit a new drama, Legends, based on Robert Littell's spy novel of the same name, the network announced today. The show will premiere in 2014. Sean Bean will star as the greatest undercover agent the FBI has ever had — but is there something more sinister at play? (Yes! Probably! That's how these shows work!) Homeland's Howard Gordon is among the show's executive producers, and Sleeper Cell creators Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris will serve as showrunners. Espionage drama cred achieved! We're approaching the saturation point on these "normal-looking guy has a huge, violent secret" shows, but at least this one has Ned Stark/Boromir.

In this day and age of television, it’s really hard to think that you can seriously put together a recipe for success, especially looking back just a few years on all the times you might have thought you’d managed it, but TNT may be about as close as you can get with Legends.
The show is set to hit in 2014, and TNT has ordered 10 episodes. If you were forced to make a prediction, I don’t see how you’d bet against this one. At least, if you’re looking at the show being good. Being popular is another thing altogether.
With Sean Bean starring, and based on a Robert Littell’s work, you’re already solid out of the gates. Throw in a pretty solid line-up behind the scenes, and an interesting supporting cast (see full details below), and this one should be a hit. I’m...

On the ABC thriller, Revenge, actress Amber Valletta, as Lydia Davis, has flip flopped between being Victoria’s best friend and sleeping with Conrad. Now Valletta is headed to a brand new TNT pilot called Legends. She’s joining Game of Thrones alum, Sean Bean!
We have very high expectations for Legends because this pilot comes from executive producer Howard Gordon who works on the runaway hit, Homeland. The plot of Legends is based upon the novel written by Robert Littell. Like Homeland, Legends does involve intrigue.
Actors 90210‘s Rob Mayes; Big Love and Grey’s Anatomy alum Tina Majorino and Lux Haney Jardine of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter have also been cast in the pilot in which Bean stars as Martin Odum, “a deep-cover CIA operative” who Deadline explains, is a total chameleon. The agent can lose himself completely when becoming a new person for each under cover assignment.

Steve Harris is reuniting with his Awake producer Howard Gordon to co-star in TNT’s drama pilot Legends, which is based on the novel by Robert Littell, and centers on an undercover CIA operative (played by Sean Bean) who is also a chameleon of sorts, who is able to suitably transform himself into a different person for each job. Harris will play a character named Yates, who's the director of the D.C.O. Task Force responsible for reinstating Martin. Anyone read the novel to shed some light on the character Harris will play, and his involvement in the story? Well, at least he won’t die in this one. At least, not for a while, anyway. Who knows after a few seasons, though? Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”, “Lord of the Rings”, and a ton of other movies and TV shows where he dies), has signed up to replace Brendan Fraser on TNT’s thriller TV series “Legends”, from “Homeland” and “24″ producer/writer Howard Gordon. In the show, Bean will play Martin Odum, “a deep-cover operative who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. But his own identity comes into question when a mysterious stranger suggests that Martin isn’t who he thinks he is.” Bean last appeared on the ABC TV series “Missing”, where he, yes, died in the pilot episode. “Legends” will be based on the book by Robert Littell. Fraser was originally set to play Odum, but departed due to creative differences.

Sean Bean has been cast in TNT's "Legends" pilot, according to Deadline. Brendan Fraser was originally attached to the role, but left the project in October. Fraser was also expected to executive produce the pilot -- no word yet on whether Bean will take over those duties too.
In the pilot, produced by "Homeland's" Howard Gordon, Bean will play Martin Odum, a spy who is adept at undercover missions because of his ability to transform himself into a different person depending on the job. The project is based on Robert Littell's novel of the same name. Bean's last lead role was on Season 1 of HBO's "Game of Thrones," but maybe this character will have a little more longevity.
