As per The Hollywood Reporter, All Day and a Night (which is prison slang for a life sentence without possibility of parole) will follow “a TV news crew that heads to prison to chronicle the life of two guards. Relativity Studios will co-produce All Day And A Night with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley and also will finance and distribute the pic. Paul Ruehl and the late Lester Lewis penned the script, based on an idea from Goldstein and Daley. The title All Day And A Night is prison slang for “life without parole.” The action-comedy follows a TV news crew doing a story on a day in the life of two prison guards. Unfortunately for them, on this day a violent prison riot breaks out, leaving the news crew and the less than entirely competent guards stranded inside. Brett Dahl is overseeing the film for Relativity Studios.
Goldstein and Daley next will direct their script for Vacation, New Line’s reboot of the classic comedy franchise. Shooting begins in September. Additionally, their Horrible Bosses 2 will be released in November. Goldstein and Daley are repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson.

Updated: Comedy TV writer Lester Lewis, who worked on The Office, died last night. He was 46. Lester most recently wrote and executive produced a “shortcom” project for Fox starring Michael Kosta, which the two co-created. It is eyed for the network’s summer Short-Com Comedy Hour series. Earlier this season, Lewis worked as a consulting producer on David Kohan and Max Mutchnick’s CBS comedy series Partners, having previously served as co-executive producer on Kohan and Mutchnick’s NBC series Four Kings. “We are devastated by the loss of this incredible man and brilliant writer,” Kohan and Mutchick said. “We had the privilege of working with him on two shows. They were both joyous experiences. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and children at this time.” Lewis was a consulting producer on NBC’s Emmy-winning Office, where he spent four seasons. He started his career on The PJs...

All of the "High School Musical" kids, including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, may have graduated from East High, but Ms. Darbus' drama class lives on in the Disney Channel's new pilot inspired by the "High School Musical" franchise.
"Madison High" is the channel's new music and dance-driven comedy pilot, which will introduce viewers to a new troupe of theater students. Alyson Reed will reprise her role as drama teacher Ms. Darbus in the project. Production on the pilot begins in March and if it is picked up, it will premiere in early 2012.
Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, says, "'High School Musical' introduced the joys of musicals and musical theater to a whole new generation and kids and families. They embraced the themes explored in those movies -- about expressing oneself and following your dreams. And now, with 'Madison High,...

Disney Channel has handed a pilot order to Madison High, a music and dance-driven comedy pilot featuring the melodramatic drama teacher Ms. Darbus (Alyson Reed) from the High School Musical franchise and a troupe of theater students. Disney channel put Madison High, described as the channel's first musical comedy and its most ambitious series to date, on fast-track development in November when it began preliminary casting. Production on the pilot begins in March for a potential early 2012 series launch. “High School Musical introduced the joys of musicals and musical theater to a whole new generation and kids and families," Disney Channel topped Gary Marsh said. "And now, with Madison High, we hope to give kids a whole new set of characters with whom to engage – along with more great original music, dance numbers and songs.” Madison High will feature four original songs written by Matthew Gerrard, Robbie Nevil, Jamie Houston,...

The success of "Glee" has inspired other networks to begin producing musical series. Disney Channel, which is home to "High School Musical" installments is next in line, fast tracking a single-camera comedy show tentatively titled "Madison High".
Unlike "Glee", "Madison" relies on original music but like "Glee", the cast break-into-song-and-dance. The plan is to feature also artists from Disney's music label. Deadline says the project is the network's "most ambitious series yet".
Preliminary casting is already underway although a formal pilot order is yet official. They are looking for 11 to 16 year olds who will play the students of Madison High. The school "is trying to build a revolutionary theater program" and the students are working in an original piece based on their lives for an end of year project.
The development meanwhile involves "Jonas L.A." scribe Lester Lewis who works as a writer again beside executive producing with Paul Hoen.

The "High School Musical" kids have graduated. Miley Cyrus is wrapping up "Hannah Montana" this year. And the Jonas Brothers' latest show just got canceled. Time for the Disney Channel to find the latest batch of tuneful tweens. With that in mind the channel has put "Madison High" into development, hoping it can create a "Glee" for a younger set. Disney has high hopes for the series, which is a brainchild of Lester Lewis, the co-creator of "The Office" and a writer on more adult-oriented fare such as "Flight of the Conchords"...

Exclusive: Call it High School Musical: the series. Or Glee with original music. Disney Channel is fast-tracking what is described as its most ambitious series yet. Tentatively titled Madison High, the single-camera comedy is still in development but preliminary casting has already begun and a formal pilot order is expected to follow. Just like HSM, Madison High employs the break-into-song-and-dance format to tell the stories about 11-16 year-olds navigating the school social hierarchy. It is set at Madison High, which is trying to build a revolutionary theatre program, and follows a pool of students who, by the end of the year, will have produced an original piece based on their lives. The Office alum Lester Lewis, who worked with Disney Channel on another music-driven single-camera comedy, Jonas L.A., is writing Madison High, which he is executive producing with Paul Hoen. Hoen, who has directed about a dozen Disney Channel original movies,...

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.

ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

Tubefilter's Jonathan Hludzinski examines House Poor and Daryl Fron OnCar in the second part of his series on Strike.TV: Yay! Mindy Kaling saves the day! Strike.TV redeemed! House Poor is about writer and actress Mindy Kaling’s foray into impoverished home ownership. Written by Kaling and Lester Lewis, the mockumentary pilot begins with Mindy throwing a baby shower for herself in order to furnish her home. Hilarity ensues when Mindy gets annoyed at her guests for actually buying gifts for a baby girl and not checking her registries…at Crate and Barrel and Z Gallery. I don’t watch The Office so I’m not predisposed to Love Mindy Kaling, but for some reason, the moment she appears onscreen at the opening of the show, I laughed. A combination of her sudden close-up, a glint of sardonic wit in her eyes and the fast throwaway joke about fellow...

Today, after months of delays and strategizing, Strike.TV has finally launched. It's been a while since the picket lines of striking WGA writers last winter where the idea of a video portal for professional writers (read: WGA writers) could have a place to showcase their original web series while also owning the rights to all content. The idea seemed simple enough. Writers would head out and rally together resources — celebrity actor friends, camera ops, editors, etc. — calling in all the favors and waivers they could manage. ["allowfullscreen":"true","allowscriptaccess":"always","src":"http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1981034&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=0&show_portrait=0&color=00Adef&fullscreen=1"] The content was the easy part. With Hollywood on strike for two months, it seemed everyone had a little time to spare and a hand to lend. In all, some fifty web series were collected for the newly formed site, loading it up with a year's worth of star-driven series. Here are some of the web series debuting today: * Unknown Sender, written/directed...

An online network formed by professional TV and film scribes during the writer's strike unveiled a slate Wednesday featuring contributions from the minds behind the likes of "The Office" and "Die Hard."
Strike.tv plans to launch this summer with more than 40 shortform programs, including comedies, dramas and a game show. Some programs will be serialized while others will be standalone; the site has yet to secure advertising.
Participating writers include Lester Lewis ("The Office"), Rob Kutner ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), Stephen E. de Souza ("Die Hard"), Karen Harris ("General Hospital") and Ron Corcillo ("Malcolm in the Middle").
The impetus for the online network came from writers who wanted to generate revenue for out-of-work colleagues. To that end, Strike.TV pledges to donate the first three months of ad revenue to the Entertainment Assistance Program of the Actors Fund.
However, Strike.tv is also intended to become a profitable venture in its own right, allowing participating writers to own their intellectual property. Its creators also anticipate it could be an alternative to the studio system as well as a breeding ground for programming that studios could co-opt.
Strike.tv has also attracted talent including Bob Newhart, Timothy Dalton and "Saturday Night Live's" Kristen Wiig.
