Film at Lincoln Center and African Film Festival Inc. have revealed the slate for the 31st New York African Film Festival, a lineup that includes more than 50 films hailing from over 25 countries.
The festival, running from May 8-14, will open with the North American premiere of Over the Bridge, director Tolu Ajayi’s narrative feature set in Lagos, Nigeria. The closing-night slot goes to Dilli Dark, directed by Dibakar Das Roy, a narrative feature about a Nigerian Mba student in Delhi, India. Nigerian actor Samuel Abiola Robinson stars in the role of Michael Okeke.
“The whole intent behind it is to not just talk about Africans in Delhi,” Roy told Outlook India. “The intent is to talk about anyone who feels like an outsider in society today, that could be in India, America, or any other place. Michael Okeke is a metaphor for every outsider, whether he is an Indian or foreigner in any society.

Inspired by true events, ‘Fight Like a Girl’, directed by Matthew Leutwyler, tells the tale of a young Congolese woman who finds new life in a boxing ring after escaping from an illegal mineral mine. The film is being featured under the ‘Cinema of the World’ category at the 54th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) here.
While interacting with delegates at a press conference, Leutwyler said the film is inspired by true events.
“It is based on the story of a female boxing club in East Congo, started by a soldier. He was approached by young women who were victims of sexual violence and betrayal. He was trying to help them win back their confidence through boxing.
“One day a young woman came to the boxing club with an intent to track down the person who killed her father. But later her vengeance gets transformed and she embraces boxing as a sport.

During the extended Covid-19 quarantine we’ve all been dealing with, there’s no right or wrong way to handle things. Some people have been less productive (myself included) than others, but there are a handful of folks who are really taking their creativity to the next level while in isolation. Matthew Leutwyler and Anton Laines are two such individuals, as they actually came up with a series during this time, centered around characters in this exact situation. Disconnected is described as “a weekly experimental drama series shot by the actors and produced remotely while under countrywide quarantine orders in the United States, India, United Kingdom, and Rwanda with a cast and crew of over 50 people based in 7 different time zones.” Putting most of us to shame, Leutwyler and Laines made something out of nothing, to say the least, so it was a pleasure to chat with them recently about...

Ya know somethin’, creeps? I am 100% convinced that technology is trying to kill us. Kill Us, I say! For instance, witness this fearsome event that transpired in the Crypt just today: I threw some bread into my trusted terror toaster, and that tin-plated boob burnt that bread blacker than a million moonless midnights! Ok, maybe “kill” is too strong a word, but that mother was definitely tryin’ to F up my day. Anyway, with my constant tech turmoils, is it any wonder I found Uncanny, a film about a devious humanoid AI, such a compelling watch? And wouldn’t ya know it, look who just strolled into the Crypt; none other than the flick’s die-rector Matthew Leutwyler!
Famous Monsters. I found Uncanny to almost be a post-modern take on the Frankenstein tale. Was ol’ Franky-baby an inspiration on the film?

Starring Mark Webber, David Clayton Rogers, Rainn Wilson, and Lucy Griffiths, the film follows David Kressen, a roboticist who seems to have created the world's first "perfect" artificial intelligence, which he names Adam. But soon enough, it starts to exhibit startling and strange behavior. I have always loved movies that take place outdoors in the wilderness ever since seeing Ken Annakin’s The Swiss Family Robinson (1960) at a matinee showing in 1980 (when theaters still did that sort of thing) and John Boorman’s Deliverance (1972), though I will admit that the latter, although beautifully lensed by Vilmos Zsigmond, is enough to make anyone want to stay indoors! Matthew Leutwyler’s The River Why (2010), filmed in Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2008, is the film version of David James Duncan’s 1983 novel of the same name and the beautiful outdoors figures prominently in the film. Title: Answers to Nothing Directed by: Matthew Leutwyler Starring: Dane Cook, Elizabeth Mitchell and Julie Benz Answers to Nothing wants to be a lot, but it falters in a big way. First, it seems like Crash-lite–which is the biggest problem. Second, it’s an ensemble piece. Ensemble pieces are hard enough to create, and here we have a director working with amateurish storytelling and directing. It might sound harsh, but sadly, it’s true. Writer/ director Matthew Leutwyler wanted to infuse the film with feelings of redemption and guilt, and it ultimately comes off as contrived. All of that together is the recipe for a poor movie — and an even worse...

Title: Answers To Nothing Director: Matthew Leutwyler Starring: Dane Cook, Julie Benz, Elizabeth Mitchell, Barbara Hershey, Zach Gilford, Erik Palladino, Kali Hawk, Aja Volkman, Greg Germann, Miranda Bailey, Mark Kelly “Answers To Nothing” is an unfortunately all-too-apt title for director Matthew Leutwyler’s sprawling thematic think piece, which focuses on the hard knocks and self-deception of a disparate group of Los Angelenos. The filmmakers seem to be reaching rather nakedly for early Paul Thomas Anderson territory here, but the copped moves come off less as artful homage and more as the nervous half-formed duplications of a mentee who’s left the nest too soon. While Ryan (Dane Cook) and Kate (Elizabeth Mitchell) try to conceive...

Julie Benz has been dead for a couple years now – well, to a lot of people who follow “Dexter” religiously. Thankfully, in real life, the 39-year-old actress has kept busy even after her shocking fourth-season offing from the hit Showtime series, popping up in roles on “Desperate Housewives” and “No Ordinary Family,” amongst other projects. In writer-director Matthew Leutwyler’s new film, “Answers To Nothing,” she plays Frankie, a hard-charging Los Angeles police investigator working to solve a case involving a missing little girl. ShockYa recently had a chance to sit down and talk to Benz one-on-one, about “Answers To Nothing” and the extremely short preparation time she had for the project...

So much happens in Matthew Leutwyler’s Answers to Nothing, but how much is actually relevant? An adulterous husband with a rockstar mistress and lawyer wife, a police detective best friend and her key suspect in a child kidnapping case, a recently graduated police officer and his grade school teacher neighbor, a racist black television writer and the soundboard mixer she meets while walking their dogs, and a recovering alcoholic caring for her brain dead brother all cross paths in Los Angeles. Southern California hides their secrets and opens them up to the tragedy of life and the mistakes made every second of every day. They try so hard to ignore the people around them, but what’s the point of living in a community if society refuses to watch out for each other?
This appears to be the main question Leutwyler and co-writer Gillian Vigman asks. Through the transgressions...

Julie Benz always sells it, whether she's playing a hardened cop or the unsuspecting wife of a serial killer. The Pittsburgh native was an accomplished figure skater until a stress fracture knocked her out of the rink and into acting. She's had numerous TV roles, most memorably as Darla on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," and as Dexter's wife on "Dexter." On the big screen, Benz has not been afraid of exploring her dark side with roles in movies like "Jawbreaker," "Satan's School for Girls," "Saw V," "Punisher: War Zone" and "Rambo."
In director Matthew Leutwyler's ensemble drama "Answers to Nothing," Benz plays a police detective on the hunt for the kidnapper of a young girl. We sat down with the effervescent actress and asked her about her own powers of intuition, how she navigates an increasingly dangerous world, her shocking death on "Dexter" and why she is so passionate about Burma.

Answers To Nothing Review
Many people reach a point in their lives when they begin examining the things they have done, and questioning if their actions were right or wrong. When they reach this ethical crossroads, they realize they have conflicting personality traits that are leading them in different directions. Writer-director Matthew Leutwyler effectively interwove the complex personality traits he embodied when he was going through his divorce into the intricate narrative of his new drama, Answers to Nothing. His interesting film brings together a group of confused and emotionally tortured people, who are striving to find something to make their lives more meaningful.

Movies with multiple intersecting storylines aren't exclusive to Los Angeles, but it's a city for which they seem ideally suited, perhaps because it's one in which incidental contact with the lives of strangers is less common and therefore more weighted with meaning. (Or maybe it's just that L.A. has such an abundance of screenwriters sitting in coffee shops projecting potential narratives on passers-by.) Out of disparate threads we're meant to draw common themes or emotional resonances, from Crash's "everyone's a little bit racist" to Magnolia's ideas about loneliness and coming to terms with the past. Answers to Nothing, written and directed by Matthew Leutwyler (Dead & Breakfast), follows a group of linked lost souls navigating personal obstacles against the backdrop of a missing neighborhood girl, as they all come to discover that it's Ok to be an awful person, as long as you don't tell anyone about it.

As with Robin Williams, the very characteristics that make Dane Cook borderline-insufferable as a comic performer and stand-up comedian can render him surprisingly compelling as a dramatic actor. Mr. Brooks twisted Cook’s amped-up alpha-male aggression to appealingly warped ends, while Dan In Real Life smartly cast him as a shallow, appealing, but fundamentally empty man bumping up hard against the limits of his own facile charm. Cook delivers his most dramatic performance to date in Answers To Nothing (a title that should scare off most of its potential audience), but writer-director Matthew Leutwyler doesn’t play to Cook’s ...

After watching an online screening on Livestream.com of Dane Cook starrer Answers to Nothing, a Q&A session took place with the star of the drama. It's not the Dane Cook you're used to - a heavy film, playing a man who struggles with his own infidelity. Set against the backdrop of a missing girl case, the film tells interweaving stories of several folks in Los Angeles, from different backgrounds and careers, all trying to do what they believe is the right thing. Answers to Nothing offers one emotions of redemption, love, chance and inner peace, and, although certainly not to everyone's taste, Matthew Leutwyler's film is one worthy of viewing. The solid cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Julie Benz, Barbara Hershey, Kali Hawk and Aja Volkman, all of which offer strong performances. The most notable performance I believe comes from Miranda Bailey; an actress and producer I honestly hadn't heard of,...

Dane Cook is proving that he's good for more than just a couple of laughs.
Coming off the heels of the announcement that the comic will be getting his own NBC show, now he is getting in touch with his serious side in the drama, "Answers to Nothing."
The story explores the dysfunction of a group of people who are all connected through a kidnapping. It's kind of like "Paris, Je T'aime" but way more bleak.
Directed by Matthew Leutwyler, Cook stars alongside Julie Benz, Zach Gilford and Elizabeth Mitchell.
Check out the new trailer below and tell us if you think the funny-guy can pull off his new serious role.
"Answers to Nothing" hits theaters Dec 2.

Why do all comedians want to be dramatic actors? Does drama pay better than comedy? Is getting an Oscar that insanely awesome? Does working the comedy club circuit make you so dead inside that you become incapable of feeling or even portraying human joy? Whatever the reason, Dane Cook has been far too successful a comedian not to try his hand at dramatic acting. And here comes that try: "Answers to Nothing" from "Dead and Breakfast" director Matthew Leutwyler. The trailer:
I know the title and all, but I hope the movie has answers to something, because the trailer left me with a lot of questions, namely what exactly this movie is about besides Cook's crossover to quote-unquote "real" acting, which actually looks promising. The answer (to nothing) follows, courtesy the official plot synopsis from the trailer's press release:

[1] There comes a moment in many a comedy star's life when he decides it's time to try his luck with dramatic acting. Apparently, that point is now for comedian/actor Dane Cook. Though he's made his name with mediocre comedies like Good Luck Chuck and Employee of the Month, Cook took on a more dramatic part in 2007's Dan in Real Life, and now he's doing his darkest turn yet inAnswers to Nothing. Directed by Matthew Leutwyler, the drama follows a several "lost souls" in L.A. who are connected by a missing girl case. Cook plays one of those lonely people, a cheating husband to Lost's Elizabeth Mitchell and a frustrated son to Barbara Hershey. Julie Benz, Zach Gilford, and Eric Palladino also star. Watch the trailer after the jump. [via Moviefone [2]] The plot appears to center around a kidnapping case being investigated by Benz's character, who in turn is buddies with Mitchell's.

Comedian Dane Cook.s acting jobs have mainly consisted of comedies, with his most notable dramatic role bordering between drama and comedy as Steve Carell.s character.s brother Mitch in Dan in Real Life. Based on this trailer for the upcoming drama Answers to Nothing, viewers will see Cook.s serious side as there doesn.t seem to be a trace of comedy in the role he plays. Directed and written by Matthew Leutwyler, Answers to Nothing centers around a group of people whose lives are connected by a missing girl case. In addition to Cook, the cast also includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Julie Benz, Barbara Hershey, and Zach Gilford. Here.s the trailer, which Yahoo posted this week. Based on the trailer, it looks like Cook.s character Ryan is married to Elizabeth Mitchell.s character Kate, and Julie Benz is the detective working on the missing girl case.

Dane Cook In Answers To Nothing Trailer
Comedian Dane Cook looks to be returning to the drama genre in Matthew Leutwyler's latest film Answers to Nothing. The Film Stage has the first trailer for the film and it sort of feels like a bland drama that tries intertwining several stories to confuse the viewer and possibly cover up the poor acting or lack of direction. Dane Cook doesn't fit the role at all; he honestly doesn't fit any roles in the drama genre.
