After the humongous hit and accolades he received from Barbie last year, Ryan Gosling is back on the big screen with The Fall Guy. The film interestingly pairs him with Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt whose film was part of the Barbenheimer hype train last year. Their hilarious banter about the phenomenon and their films attracted fans to see their chemistry in The Fall Guy.

The film was released on May 3, and audiences generally loved the David Leitch-directed film. On its opening day, the film collected an underwhelming box office collection of $10.4 million, a relatively low opening compared to its budget. Gone are the days of Ryan Gosling beating goons to a pulp in elevators in films like “Drive” or drinking a marriage into dissolution in “Blue Valentine”. At least for right now. In a recent Wall Street Journal Magazine interview, Gosling admitted that the softer, more fun roles he’s taken on lately are largely a result of looking out for his wife, Eva Mendes, and their children. The actor says that his decision to step back from more intense roles with came after preparing for his role in the Oscar-winning musical “La La Land”.
“I think ‘La La Land’ was the first,” Gosling said when asked about his practice of factoring his children into the roles he chooses. “It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we...

The Magic of Movie Stunts Illuminated in The Fall Guy ‘The Fall Guy’ is not just a film; it’s a dynamic celebration of the thrilling, often unseen art of movie stunts. Directed by the accomplished stuntman-turned-director David Leitch, known for his work on action-packed films like ‘John Wick’ and ‘Atomic Blonde’, this movie offers an insider’s view into the perilous, adrenaline-fueled world of stunt performers. In a heartfelt moment reflecting on the essence of the film, David Leitch expressed satisfaction with his team’s exceptional efforts: First of all, we were really blessed to get the people that we wanted. Following a buzz-worthy premiere at this year’s SXSW Festival, Universal Pictures released “The Fall Guy” nationwide on May 3. The film directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce is loosely based on the 1980s TV series about stunt performers. Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a stuntman working on his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) directorial debut action film, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film’s lead actor.
Early reviews for the action comedy have been overwhelmingly positive. It holds fresh at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics consensus reading, “With action, comedy, romance, and a pair of marvelously matched stars, ‘The Fall Guy’ might be the rare mainstream movie with something to entertain everyone.” Read our full review round-up below.

It’s possible that many missed the news that right after the “Barbenheimer” fever, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling joined forces to bring The Fall Guy to audiences. It’s been described as an exhilarating journey. However, despite receiving such rave reviews, the movie didn’t perform as strongly as expected at the box office on its opening day.

Although the movie started its journey with somewhat impressive numbers, people somehow expected more. Speculation is swirling that the timing of its release, coinciding with May the Fourth and the re-release of The Phantom Menace, may have impacted its numbers.

Action romance is a tricky genre to master — it requires the right balance of heart and spectacle. But when done well, à la “True Lies” or “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” it will live on forever in the rewatch rotation.
Stunt coordinator-turned-director David Leitch has launched cars straight into the air and staged fight scenes that have had theaters erupting in thunderous cheers. His latest challenge, however, will be making the audience’s heart melt with “The Fall Guy,” in theaters now. Smartly, he cast Ryan Gosling, the living embodiment of a junior high schooler’s diary entry, to play the hero.
Adapted from the 1980s series, the Universal film follows down-at-his-heels action choreographer Colt Seavers (Gosling), who must unravel a treacherous mystery while on the set of the next big blockbuster. The movie happens to be directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.

Guys rock! Who doesn't love guys? Whether they're free or falling, guys really have a lot to offer. The latest guy movie on the scene is "The Fall Guy," starring Ryan Gosling as the titular guy: a professional stunt guy who accidentally becomes targeted by a bunch of criminal guys. The film was directed by David Leitch, who has previously directed other guys in movies like "John Wick," "Deadpool 2," and "Bullet Train."
After grossing $10.4 million on its opening day, including $3.15 million from Thursday previews, "The Fall Guy" is now on track to gross around $28 million in its opening weekend (per Variety). That puts it on par with another recent guy movie, "Free Guy," which starred Ryan Gosling's fellow Ryan (and fellow guy), Ryan Reynolds. "Free Guy" grossed $28.3 million upon its release in 2021 and went on to make $331 million worldwide -- a modest success against its $100-125 million budget.

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy promised extreme action and even intense drama, and more than the fight sequences, the soundtracks of the movie were also carefully curated. A lot of discussion and deliberation went on inside the room to pick the most appropriate songs for every scene.
Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy
There’s a variety of soundtracks used in The Fall Guy. From the heart-wrenching Taylor Swift break-up song ‘All Too Well’ to a karaoke version of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a Bottle’, fans would not be able to guess what track comes next.
Ryan Gosling Did Not Like One Of The Fall Guy’s Main Soundtracks
The Fall Guy also featured some classic hits like the 1979 Kiss song ‘I Was Made For Lovin’ You’, but it almost did not make the cut as everyone seemed to hate it. Director David Leitch was the one who proposed the idea.

To understand the love letter that is “The Fall Guy” — a passion project of former stunt performer turned A-list action director David Leitch — consider that Drew Pearce couldn’t write the script until Leitch identified the old-school stunts that would serve as its centerpieces.
IndieWire talked to Leitch and stunt designer Chris O’Hara about four of those jaw-dropping action scenes: the record-breaking cannon roll on the beach, the 225-foot car jump, the helicopter high-fall, and the boat jump. The personal and creative stories of how they came about are almost as gripping as the scenes themselves.
The Cannon Roll
After his accident, stunt double Colt Seavers’ (Ryan Gosling) first stunt is a big one: an explosion that sends his Jeep into a cannon roll. It was so big that Gosling’s own stunt double, Logan Holladay (who is seen on screen buckling Gosling into the Jeep), broke the Guinness World Record with eight-and-half rolls.

The Fall Guy is kicking off summer movie season with a No. 1 debut at the box office this weekend, but it’s coming in below initial tracking. After earning $10.4 million on Friday, the feature is now projected to open to $28 million for the weekend, down from earlier tracking that had it in the $30-$35 million range.
The film earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences, so it’s possible word of mouth could help the movie make up ground in the coming weeks. The Fall Guy is said to have a net budget of $130 million when accounting for incentives for shooting in Australia. Overseas, it is projected to take in another $25.8 million over the weekend, which would bring its global haul to $65.4 million. (It already opened in some markets last week.)

Saturday Am: Universal’s The Fall Guy isn’t so strong, and nobody is really shocked.
While it was projected to do at least $30M, and it’s coming in at $28M, this is the range for original action comedies, even when they star Ryan Gosling. PostTrak exits report he’s 50% of the reason why people went to see the movie (versus 35% for Emily Blunt).
The opening for Fall Guy is actually on the higher end of Gosling starts, ranked third after anomaly Barbie ($162M) and Blade Runner 2049 ($32.7M), yet further down on Blunt’s. It’s looking like her tenth-best opening of her career stateside, short of Edge of Tomorrow ($28.7M) and Jungle Cruise ($35M with an asterisk – it did have a theatrical day-and-date PVOD on Disney+).
So, what gives? Why is Fall Guy playing like a deflated balloon, even with a great A- CinemaScore and 90% positive on PostTrak?...

This article contains spoilers for "The Fall Guy."
At a pre-release screening, "The Fall Guy" director David Leitch and star Ryan Gosling greeted the audience by not only thanking them for attending (and playfully encouraging them to stay off their phones) but clarifying that the ensuing film — inspired by the 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors — is a love letter to the stunt community. That much would be true even if the film's end credits didn't include a lengthy montage of the making of some of the stunts that occur within the story. Leitch has a long history in the stunt community, having worked on everything from "John Wick" to "Deadpool 2" and "Ocean's Eleven." It's one thing, of course, to say that you've made a movie that's a love letter to stunts but it's another to actually pull off jaw-dropping stunt sequences. Chicago – “The Fall Guy” is one of those movies where what’s happening on the margins is so much more interesting than the main event. And the promotional campaign for it is far superior to the film itself. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have the romantic chemistry to fuel a high octane action comedy … but “The Fall Guy” never steps on the gas.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot elements from “The Fall Guy,” now playing in theaters.
Long before Taylor Swift embarked on the Eras Tour, director David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick had the idea to use “All Too Well” as a key moment in “The Fall Guy.”
McCormick, a self-professed Swiftie, and Leitch were trying to find a fresh and contemporary song to fit into a particular scene.
In the film, Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, one of Hollywood’s top stuntmen. After experiencing an on-set accident, he falls off the grid for 18 months, ghosting aspiring director Jody (Emily Blunt), someone he also happens to be dating. The two awkwardly reunite on the set of her directorial debut, and when they wrap their first day, Colt retreats to his pickup truck reflecting on happier times with Jody.
McCormick thought a Swift song would be perfect for that scene, and even Gosling agreed.

“I knew daredevils — and I ain’t got nothing against ‘em — it’s just they’re all dead.”
So says the titular character of “The Stunt Man” to his trainer the first time his desire for mortality is put into question. The theme of death is a constant one in this 1980 film. It’s what propels the main character, Vietnam-Vet Cameron, to go on the run — the state in which we meet him at the beginning of the film. It’s what draws him to a movie set near the beach where dozens of bodies are ripped apart, sporting soldier’s uniforms from World War I, and buried across the sand. It’s what fascinates the film’s director, Eli Cross, whose need to draw reality out of a production that’s drowning in artifice places Cameron in the precarious position of both stuntman and muse. But their latest film wasn’t the only thing Leitch and his wife and creative partner Kelly McCormick spoke about while on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast this week. They also had to dodge questions about Leitch’s brief tenure as the director of the upcoming “Jurassic World” reboot.

On this week’s “Screen Talk,” co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson review new releases “The Fall Guy” (Universal), “Wildcat” (Oscilloscope), and “I Saw the TV Glow” (A24). While they both enjoyed David Leitch’s latest stunt-fest, starring Ryan Gosling as a movie stuntman and Emily Blunt as his director and ex-girlfriend, Thompson said the movie set in Sydney was well-mounted but a tad shallow and cartoony, while Lattanzio said it was not a challenging movie in any way, and that a series of showdowns and battles pile on at the end. Box office projections are all over the map, from $25-50 million. Upbeat word of mouth should carry the day.
Despite lukewarm Sundance reactions to Ethan Hawke’s “Wildcat” — which the actor-director-writer (“Blaze”) crafted specifically for his daughter, actress Maya Hawke, who plays Southern writer Flannery O’Connor — both Lattanzio and Thompson admired the movie,...

David Leitch has lovingly crafted "The Fall Guy" as a homage to the stunt community, with a seasoned yet luckless stuntman named Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) at the center of the film's gravity-defying shenanigans. Colt's talents are quite literally overshadowed by the actor he doubles — glib superstar Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who brazenly boasts about doing his own stunts and robs Colt of recognition. To make things worse, Colt undergoes a stunt-related mishap that plunges him into a pit of self-doubt and shame, but little does he know that he is yet to experience something far more nefarious: dangerous, hidden schemes that rival ones in a riveting action-thriller. All hell breaks loose, and a string of insane, audacious stunts ensue. If you're interested in /Film's glowing review of the film, you can read it here.

As the film begins, it’s established that Colt has a relationship with Jody (Emily Blunt), but the relationship is severed after Colt breaks his back with a stunt gone wrong. After a year goes by and he’s healed, Colt gets a call from Movie Producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham from “Ted Lasso”), hiring him back to work on a film that Jody is directing. The summer movie season kicks off in earnest with the release of "The Fall Guy" this weekend. Starring Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") and Emily Blunt ("Oppenheimer"), this movie has been garnering great buzz ever since it premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas, back in March. /Film's own Jacob Hall gave the film a near-perfect 9 out of 10 review. Ryan Gosling’s rise and fame came from his ability to play characters across genres and shine equally. The actor, however, is trying to limit and filter out the roles he plays. Of course, lately, Gosling has been doing lighter movies, while doing fairly great with his recent movies including claiming Oscar nominations for his roles in La La Land and Barbie, fans would want to see him in intense thrillers again.

The nature of movies does have an impact on actors. Gosling recently revealed that limiting movie roles with the inherent nature of intensity in the narrative affects not only the actor but everyone surrounding him. Gosling has been turning down psychologically twisted roles, and it will certainly upset fans, but he has a good reason behind it.

The Foundation of ‘The Fall Guy’ – A Tribute to Stunt Work Directed by David Leitch, The Fall Guy emerges not just as a typical action movie but as a reverent ode to the unsung heroes of cinema – the stunt performers. At the core of this film is the recognition that Stunt work is the backbone of action films and brings an authenticity that is unparalleled, as quoted from an industry insider. This sentiment is profoundly reflected in each sequence where Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt not only act but perform stunts that set new benchmarks for filmmaking. Gosling

Stunt work is all about selling an illusion. When the medium of cinema was first invented, it was initially marketed and thought of as something akin to a sideshow attraction, a wondrous magic trick where a series of pictures put next to each other and illuminated in rapid succession gave the illusion of movement. After this initial novelty gave way to artists utilizing the medium to tell stories, the craftspeople making movies realized that the concept of illusion extended to every aspect of filmmaking.
Where theatre was traditionally bound to a stage or perhaps a circus tent, the movies could expand the canvas of what could be done physically — if cameras could capture it, it could be performed. It's no surprise, then, that films saw people like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and others push the boundaries of physicality and feats of derring-do in the cinema.

“The Fall Guy” costume designer Sarah Evelyn received the script long before Oscar nominee Emily Blunt was on board to play Jody, an aspiring film director. As Evelyn thumbed through the pages, she was attracted to the idea of how it felt like a classic movie with a prototypical underdog.
In putting Jody’s looks together, Evelyn began looking at ‘80s icons like Lauren Hutton and Brooke Shields. Then, she took stock of some famous female directors’ wardrobes.
“I looked at Kathryn Bigelow and Patty Jenkins, women who direct action. I took a good look at Greta Gerwig because she’s very of the moment,” says Evelyn. Other directors including Agnes Varda also popped into mind, and when Blunt signed on, she too came up with ideas. “She was really well researched and is costume-forward.”

David Leitch has had ups and downs since co-directing John Wick a decade ago. While he's always been an incredibly talented action filmmaker, courtesy of his background as a stunt performer and coordinator, his apparent passion for mixing action and comedy hasn't always served him well. Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train both shortchange the action for comedy that's often just as likely to cause groans as laughter, but with The Fall Guy, Leitch has found the perfect balance of humor, hits, and heart. Maybe that's because The Fall Guy is a movie about a stuntman, maybe not. Either way, there's a sense of joy and love for filmmaking broadly and the people who make movie magic possible in The Fall Guy that invites viewers to...

Based on the television show of the same name that ran for five seasons from 1981-86 and starred Lee Majors and Heather Thomas, director David Leitch’s new film, The Fall Guy, employs the same combination of action and sexual tension that fueled the show (albeit not necessarily between the two main characters). This approach makes for an entertaining and somewhat nostalgic aura around a film that, if approached a different way, could have resulted in another disappointing cinematic adaptation of a popular television property.

In “The Fall Guy,” Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, the stunt double for Hollywood action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Seavers, like “The Fall Guy” director David Leitch and stunt designer Chris O’Hara, got his professional start as a stunt performer before 1999, when “The Matrix” served as a turning point for the profession.
“When my generation came in, ‘The Matrix’ was a big influential time in my career as a stunt performer,” said Leitch on the IndieWire Toolkit podcast. The director worked as a stunt performer on Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s 1999 groundbreaking film. “I learned [and] became heavily exposed to wire work.”
Not only did “The Matrix” successfully integrate wire work, which had become a staple in 1980s and ’90s Hong Kong action films when they hired legendary Chinese fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, but the film broke ground in combining practical stunts with visual effects.

David Leitch Says He Pitched Brad Pitt As Cable & ‘Deadpool’ Meetings Were Initially About ‘X-Force’
Ever since co-directing the “John Wick” franchise in 2014 and then splitting off on his own from partner Chad Stahelski, filmmaker David Leitch has been one of the most in-demand action directors on the planet. “The Fall Guy” (Universal) opens in the U.S./Canada Friday — one of the most prestigious spots on the movie release calendar. Since “Iron Man” in 2008, and since Disney initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, the first weekend in May has marked the start of the summer movie season.
When MCU “Deadpool & Wolverine” left this date in favor of July 26, Universal grabbed it — and the expectations that come with it. As a result, there’s an unusually wide range of estimates for the domestic opening weekend: We hear everything from the high 20s to over $50 million, with consensus closer to $35 million or a bit more.
An opening weekend of $35 million-$40 million would be a big improvement over a disastrous April (where “Civil War” was the sole film to debut over $25 million), but that would be only the fifth-best opening of 2024. Historically, this date tops any opening gross and usually...

This weekend marks the official start of the summer movie season. Yeah, I know – it’s still springtime, but if you follow blockbuster movie release dates, you’ll know that May’s always been prime real estate, with many of the biggest money earners of all time coming out in that month. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 kicked off the season with a muscular $118 million opening. Sadly, this year’s first big would-be blockbuster, The Fall Guy, looks like it will only open with about a fraction of that take, with the industry predicting a $35-40 million opening.
That opening would put it right in line with director David Leitch’s last big action flick, Bullet Train, which opened with $30 million on its way to a $103 million North American cume and a $239 million worldwide total. That was considered a more-than-ok number, considering the film only had a budget in the $90 million range.

A line of dialogue in The Fall Guy is already causing discourse among some viewers, prior to it opening in theaters.
In the David Leitch-directed action-comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham’s character, Gail Meyer, at one point makes a reference to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s turbulent relationship.
In the scene, Waddingham, who plays an executive producer in the movie, reportedly walks into a trailer while looking disheveled and tells director Jody Moreno (Blunt), “It’s like Amber and Johnny were just in here.”
Some viewers have since taken to social media to criticize the line, with one user writing on X (formerly Twitter), “‘The Fall Guy’ made a distasteful “joke” about the domestic abuse amber suffered at the hands of johnny. it’s 2024, why are we writing these kinds of lines into movies? nasty work.”
Another social media user wrote that the film...

Colt Seaver seems to have it all. He has one of the best jobs in the world as the stuntman for the world’s biggest action star, Tom Ryder. On top of that, he has fallen in love with camera operator Jody Moreno.
Everything seems perfect. But when a stunt on Ryder’s latest film goes wrong, Colt finds himself severely injured. No longer feeling invincible, he withdraws from everything… including his relationship with Jody.
Eighteen months later, Colt finds himself at rock bottom when the phone rings. Producer Gail Meyer wants him to return to stunts for Tom Ryder.
Colt is initially skeptical until Gail tells him that Jody is the director of Tom’s big blockbuster film, and she has requested him to do stunts. Seeing an opportunity to rekindle the flame with Jody, he immediately hops on a flight to Sydney to join the production.
But as Colt arrives,...

It’s not always easy to find out which movies are hitting theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May is filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 3 is David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy,” an action comedy about a disgraced stuntman who must find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend’s blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hannah Waddingham. Also hitting theaters is “Tarot,” a horror movie about a naive group of friends and a tarot reading gone wrong starring Olwen Fouéré, Avantika, Jacob Batalon and Humberly González. Two films getting limited releases this week are A24’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a horror drama about two teenagers’ bond over a supernatural TV show that is mysteriously canceled, and “Evil Does Not Exist,...
