Thames TV’s Rainbow was the ordinary, everyday tale of Geoffrey: a grown man who turned his back on family life and a fulfilling career in favour of living in a primary-coloured nightmare with an assortment of irascible talking animals and polyamorous troubadours. There was Bungle, a moody, stroppy wet-blanket of a bear who spent the day naked but inexplicably donned pyjamas at night-time; George, a passive-aggressive pink hippo who hid his Machiavellian evil and simmering sexuality behind a façade of lash-fluttering shyness; and Zippy, a… a… erm… (whatever the hell Zippy was) hellraiser with a rugby-ball head who enjoyed hurling hand grenades of mischief into every interaction. Whenever we think of Rainbow, it’s this cast of four main characters that comes to mind, but they weren’t the original quartet, and neither would they close out the show’s long run on television.

When have tabloid rumours been spot on about Doctor Who, and when have they been, er, less accurate?
“Look Who's the Doc's new assistant!” On Tuesday, the Mirror's front page trumpeted an exclusive reveal that Bradley Walsh would be Jodie Whittaker's companion in the new series of Doctor Who.
See related Game Of Thrones season 7 episode 6 questions answered Game Of Thrones season 7 episode 7 review: The Dragon And The Wolf
The one-time Sarah Jane Adventures guest star would be the first companion actor to have hosted a quiz show with the same name as a 1960s serial, but beyond trivia, the report has been fairly well received as far as we can see – Walsh is a decent actor, who's worked with incoming executive producer Chris Chibnall before on Law & Order UK, and a fun screen presence. But given the source, might it all be a load of bobbins?...

Doctor Who. Love it or hate it, it’s a massive part of British culture. There can’t really a person in England who doesn’t know the terms Tardis, Dalek, or Sonic Screwdriver.
As the Doctor and Ace walked into the sunset in 1989’s Survival, little did anyone know that the series was soon to be cancelled, possibly gone forever.
Luckily, in 2005, much loved writer Russell T Davies revived the show for the 21st century. This separated Who into two categories – Classic Who, and NuWho.
So, to count down to the Christmas special, here is my review of each NuWho Doctor’s best episodes.
Christopher Eccleston (2005)Best Episode: Dalek – By Robert Sherman
This fantastic episode revived The Daleks, not seen on screen for seventeen years. Big Finish writer Robert Sherman wrote this fantastic tale explaining the Time War and how The Time Lords and The Daleks were both destroyed,...

We revisit Dark Season and Century Falls, two children's dramas that established Russell T. Davies' early screenwriting career...
Russell T. Davies, a man synonymous with the successful revival of Doctor Who, was initially a graphic artist for Why Don't You? but he did several jobs on the show, eventually writing, directing and producing the programme. He showed his versatility when he presented an edition of Play School in its final year. Saturday morning summer filler On The Waterfront made its reputation in part due to Davies' own unique take on the classic serial The Flashing Blade. Next came Breakfast Serials, which Davies both wrote and produced. When Tony Robinson decided to take a break from making Maid Marian And Her Merry Men, an afternoon drama slot opened up and Rtd's first major breakthrough in Children's television drama began with the 1991 science fiction thriller Dark Season.

It's time to answer the question that's tearing the nation apart: who was the best Bungle in Rainbow?
It may come as a surprise to anyone who doesn't spend all their time thinking about Rainbow, but there were different Bungles throughout the show's run. Each Bungle brought something different to the party and had their own unique characteristics, a bit like a Spice Girls made entirely of bears.

K-9, the beloved robotic dog companion of several incarnations of The Doctor in "Doctor Who," is getting his own feature film.
"K9 Timequake" will continue the dog's adventures from the recent television series, and bring him face to face with classic Doctor Who villain Omega. The dog first appeared in 1977 on the main show and has popped up on various 'Who' spin-offs including his own Australian kids show in 2009.
In the series, Omega was a Time Lord who helped construct the Eye of Harmony which gives Time Lord society control of time and space - but it came at a cost, he was thrown into an anti-matter universe and now lives due to sheer force of will as his flesh long ago turned to dust and his mind has been warped.
"K9 Timequake" will hit cinemas in the United Kingdom in 2017.

Actor and writer who adapted his novels for the big and small screen
The actor and writer David Cook, who has died of pancreatic cancer aged 74, was the “forgotten” first presenter of the pre-school children’s programme Rainbow. He went on to write the television film Walter (1982), which was screened on Channel 4’s debut night as the first Film on Four.
Cook hosted only the first series of Rainbow, which was devised in 1972 as a British version of Sesame Street. It aimed to educate and entertain the under-fives with words, songs and ideas. Inside the Rainbow house, Cook was joined by the domineering, hyperactive puppet Zippy and the clumsy bear Bungle (originally John Leeson in a costume), as well as the glove puppets Sunshine and Moony. Music came from the folk group Telltale (only later did Rod, Jane and Freddy become the long-running singing trio) and Rainbow was a...

Last month we took a look at Doctor Who Series One as it celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Specifically, we delved deep into the murky world of in-jokes and sweet nerdy references.

Following Jenna Coleman's much-publicised wobble over whether or not to leave Doctor Who in 2014, we've had confirmation that Clara Oswald will be around for this year's series after all. This will make Clara the Doctor's longest-serving companion since the new series began and, indeed, since Janet Fielding's similarly on-off Tegan, back when Peter Davison was the Doctor.
Like Tegan, Clara's had a couple of near-miss exits during her travels already - first, the bittersweet ending of Death In Heaven and the fake-out at the end of Last Christmas. In both cases, she and the Doctor got a reprieve from Nick Frost's Santa, in such a way that when she does eventually leave, we'll all be looking for him to pop out...

From the Queen Vic to the Tardis. As Eastenders prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, we look back at its encounters with Doctor Who...
Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.
And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.
Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

To many it seems almost impossible to believe that Tom Baker is 80 years old. During the 1970s Tom’s Fourth Doctor seemed a timeless figure, striding nonchalantly through the cosmos giving out jelly babies and bon mots. His was a Doctor that was comforting but scary, friendly yet alien, funny and also deathly serious. Even today, the iconography of his era such as the scarf and K9 remain enduring images that the public hold of the show, forty years later.
For many fans, Tom Baker was the ultimate Doctor Who and his appearance in the 50th anniversary episode was a highlight. He may look different but when one hears that voice, a combination of Biblical prophet and Galaxy chocolate, a thrill still travels up and down the spine.

Nothing gets the Doctor Who community into a frenzy quite like a mysterious new character. And there hasn't been a mysterious character quite like Michelle Gomez's Missy - the Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere.
The demented Mary Poppins-esque umbrella twizzler, who we've seen briefly in both of Peter Capaldi's episodes, clearly has a key role to play throughout the new series (and possibly beyond). But at the moment, it's unclear, who she is, where she is and what she's after.
Where do you go when you need a Doctor Who fan theory? The Digital Spy forums, obviously. Here are 9 lines of thought on Missy that are doing the rounds...
1. Missy is the...Tardis
John T Baptist: "A physical aspect of the Tardis was played by Suranne Jones in a previous episode, it doesn't mean it's going to keep the same appearance later on."

Recently we ran an article looking at 19 TV shows and 1 film set in the same universe as Lost. From The X Files to Fringe to Luther, connections were uncovered that proved the fate of the island was just part of a much wider story.
That got us thinking, what other TV universes exist out there? What shows share the same settings or narrative threads that connect them to a bigger world? Last time we focused on Lost and, for the most part, the history of Oceanic Airlines.
This time, our focus is on Doctor Who and all the TV shows that inhabit its universe.
For the purposes of this article, we won’t discuss Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. These are both official spin offs, though they do bring the TV show count up to three. There is failed spin off K9 And Company and animated series Dreamland but...

I learned about the Bere Alston K9 because he was recently dognapped. From the Plymouth Herald:
Doctor Who’s faithful companion was the victim of a dog-napping – but was soon returned to his rightful home and decked out in a running vest.
Last year the K9 model appeared under the village sign in Bere Alston, sparking speculation as to where it had come from.
Last week a group of runners from the Bere Alston Trekkers were driving back from Braunton in North Devon when they noticed the metal dog had gone walkies.
Emma Dooney said: “He has been in our village for quite a while now and while we were driving back one of the chaps spotted him. Someone had actually taken him and put him under the Tavistock sign, so we loaded him back in the car and returned him to his rightful place.”
But oh no! Via his Facebook page,...

If you haven’t yet made it to the National Media Museum in Bradford, Yorkshire, for its exhibit “Doctor Who and Me: 50 Years of Doctor Who Fans” (which I’ve mentioned before), you’ve got just over a week left: the exhibit closes on February 9th.
I was at the opening night of the exhibit back in November, and I figure it’s time to share some thoughts and images from the exhibit. So I’ve been doing that all this week.
Today: a last look round the exhibit.
We’ll start outside the museum, though. This poster greeted me at the train station in Bradford:
Inside the museum, there’s this portrait of one of the museum workers, who, as a fan himself, helped curate the exhibit:
(Looks like a Vermeer!)
I love this, stuck rather unobtrusively on a few walls behind displays:
This is how fans recorded episodes...

When it comes to the classic "Doctor Who" series, one Doctor normally stands out among all others. Tom Baker was the fourth actor to play the Doctor, filling the role between 1974 and 1981, and stuck in the hearts of longtime Whovians with his unique scarf and wide-brimmed hat.
Just a few months after his most recent "Doctor Who" appearance, a surprise cameo in the 50th anniversary special, Baker is celebrating a milestone birthday on Monday (Jan. 20). He's turning 80 years old and Zap2it is marking the occasion with some of his most memorable moments from the series.
Take a look at the videos below for a stroll down memory lane with the fourth Doctor.

It didn't take long for the humor of the character to shine through.
He wasn't the only one with the jokes, though. There was always Sarah Jane.

Here we are: a largely visual guide to Doctor Who, all achieved via the medium of Ms Paint and the 'Alt + PrtSc' buttons.
1. The Sound of Drums
Where it all began.
2. An Unearthly Child
The first cliffhanger. Not only has the Tardis transported us from present day into the unknown, but there's something else. There will always be something else.
3. The Daleks
Look, the definitive “Something else”.
4. The Sensorites
After the initial distrust, the Tardis crew have put aside their differences, and the show is nearing its essence: the Doctor, his friends, "A great spirit of adventure."
5. The Dalek Invasion of Earth
The first companion departure, and it's the Doctor's grand-daughter Susan. Hartnell plays the scene beautifully, informed by his real life emotions...

We take a look at what to put in the stockings of Doctor Who and Sherlock fans this Christmas...
Obviously we have the latest instalment of the Moffat Christmas Carol to look forward to later this month, as Matt Smith bows out in a flurry of elbows and hairpieces, but Doctor Who doesn't have to stop there. You can artificially extend the experience by virtue of Doctor Who-themed presents.
While you can, of course, give someone the gift of a Wirrrn/Zoe Heriot costume just by giving them a roll of bubble wrap, we all know it's the thought that counts*, and the above thought is weird. If, like us, your brain is currently an addled mass of future tears, you might appreciate some help in assembling your thoughts into something constructive. God knows I would, but he's all busy with his son's birthday.

Regular followers are probably aware that we here are at Sound on Sight are more than a little fond of an obscure British science fiction program that celebrated an anniversary of some kind last weekend. Anniversaries are always an excellent time to reflect upon and celebrate a show’s history and the lead up to last Saturday’s “The Day of the Doctor” saw the entire Whoniverse coming together to share their thoughts on everything from their favourite episodes, most beloved eras, and of course, “their” Doctor. I just love that a top ten list can be the beginning of a good conversation or a great fight, and I find that the most heat, and some of the best light, is generated when Whovians start talking about their favourite Companions. A Companion is more than just our surrogate, they’re a gateway and guide to the series who helps us...

Here are our favourite moments from Peter Davison and co.'s tremendous gift to Who fans, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot...
Contains Spoilers for The Day of the Doctor.
While we didn't see the Fifth, Sixth or Seventh Doctors in the flesh during The Day of the Doctor there's a possibility that they might still have featured somewhere. It's possible that, on set, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy refused to let Zygons be Zygons.
As with much of the anniversary programming, once you're done with being merely incredibly entertained by the Pythonesque brilliance and sequences involving K9 and Lisa Bowerman haunting Steven Moffat's dreams, you can then embark on a game of 'Spot the Reference'. Written, directed, and initiated by Peter Davison (confirming himself as the bigger nerd in the room), The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot is like a Easter Egg within an Easter Egg,...

There’s fan-fiction, there’s cosplay, and there are a thousand ways to show your appreciation of a TV show. I for example have ‘Stayin’ Alive’ by the Bee Gees as my ringtone, in honour of Sherlock’s Moriarty.
But some people go to the next level in the name of fan art, and I’m not just talking about art students drawing their favourite characters. Well, I am talking about them, because that stuff is amazing, but some people have designed titles for the show, built their own K9, and even carved the Doctor’s face into pumpkins. I mean, this year I carved the vague outline of a cat and got jealous of how much better my girlfriend’s was. You should see some of the pumpkins that these people do.
And see you will: here are ten examples of the most amazing fan-art that the fandom has to throw up.

November seemed ridiculously far away when we heard back in May that we would have to wait Six Months for the next episode of Doctor Who. Now it’s only sixteen days away! We will try to pretend that, “to stay interested,” we need a steady release of Doctor Who goodness, like the new screenshots below, before the premiere of the 50th Anniversary special, Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor.
The fact of the matter, as I drink my coffee from my Tardis mug and gaze at my Tardis monitor mate, is that I need no help to stay interested. I may need another kind of help, however, as I dust the Tardis lunchbox next to the Tardis Yahtzee set and K9 bobblehead.
That’s Joanna Page as Queen Elizabeth. Here’s a reminder of the synopsis, released earlier this week:

A new Doctor Who trailer celebrating the show's 50th anniversary has aired on BBC One.
The trailer - which premiered earlier this evening (October 19) on the channel - features clips of all 11 Doctors from William Hartnell to Matt Smith.
Smith narrated the minute-long promo, which features the likes of Sarah Jane Smith, K9 and the Daleks.
However, the promo doesn't include footage from the upcoming 50th anniversary special.
Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special 'The Day of the Doctor', starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and John Hurt, will air worldwide on November 23.

Over the summer I came across an article at the Mirror about Doctor Who’s location manager, Iwan Roberts. I put the link aside and never found the right time to post it — it’s worth a read if you’re a production dork, or if you want to learn about the places in Cardiff they use over and over again — but when I rechecked it again today, I saw something I missed the first time around (or perhaps it wasn’t there).
Smack in the middle of the article — in a sidebar sort of way, not actually related at all to the Roberts’ piece — is an incredible collection of behind-the-scenes photos from the classic series, none of which I had ever seen before. And I’m so familiar with the material that’s generally available that I was astonished to find a trove of “new” old stuff.
Here’s a sampling.

Review Andrew Blair 30 Sep 2013 - 08:15
Andrew checks out the DVD release of Tom Baker story Terror Of The Zygons...
This review contains spoilers.
It's aptly named, is Terror of the Zygons. Its opening episode is a slow-build towards one gloriously unexpected shock moment. Even now, when you know it's coming, it's a brilliant moment of jarring editing. A sudden reveal, a scream, a zoom into a shadowy monstrous face, cue credits. You don't quite have time to process it before its over.
That's after some enjoyably ripe Hammer horror scene-setting in the north-east of Scotland. Tales of ancient horror are spun to incredulous newcomers, and we occasionally cut away to ineffable alien eyes. Most formidable of all, of course, is Tom Baker. Here he's in prime unnerving form amidst a lot of competition. Perhaps there was a competition between him, Lillias Walker and Robert Russell. That would certainly explain a lot.

A tin dog is a Time Lord’s best friend, and none more so than this very special K9 that has recently turned up on eBay. Although it isn’t one of the K9 used on the original series (it’s a toy from 2006-2009), this battery-powered remote-controlled dog would make an excellent toy, or indeed, collector’s item, as it

Warning: This article will contain some spoilers.
Over the course of fifty years, Doctor Who has birthed a number of spin-offs that followed the Doctor’s companions in their lives after leaving the Doctor. In terms of creating and selling new content, spin-offs are an obvious move for Doctor Who. It has an ever-changing cast and, over the course of their time with Doctor, the companions grow and become greater than they were before, with some becoming capable of following in the Doctor’s footsteps and fighting injustice wherever they find it. Which makes them perfect leading characters for similarly themed spin-offs.
As you’ll see, not every Doctor Who spin-off worked but despite a couple of clunkers, there’s a lot of good spin-off material to enjoy. So now with only three months until the 50th Anniversary, we continue our monthly countdown to it by looking back at Doctor Who’s spin-offs…...

From farting Slitheen to strangling companions, Robin rounds up some of Doctor Who's most bonkers moments...
With fifty years on the clock, it's safe to say that Doctor Who has enjoyed its fair share of Wtf moments. For some, these will be points that momentarily ruined the show, and for others, they'll encapsulate its ever-evolving style and bohemian spirit. Besides, the guy travels in time and space and changes his face so he pretty much has an excuse for anything! In no particular order then, here are some of Doctor Who's most bizarre moments:
Nazi River Song Kills The Doctor (Let's Kill Hitler)
A robot assassin full of miniature people. River Song dressed in a Nazi outfit. Hitler in a cupboard. Killer machines chanting “You will experience a tingling sensation and then death.” This episode is full of mental stuff and although...
