With NBC’s late-night fixture Saturday Night Live since its very first season in 1975, suffice it to say that production designer Eugene Lee has seen it all, going round and round that lofty Emmys carousel. The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. In an upset, Wynn Thomas and the team from “Hidden Figures” took home honors in Period Film, despite “Hail, Caesar!” being the only of the category’s nominees to also pick up a nom for Oscars night. “It’s been a long journey to this moment,” said Thomas, who described being nominated at the very first Art Directors Guild award for “Mars Attacks!” “I’m so...

After 41 years and 12 Emmy nominations (including one win in 2013), production designer Eugene Lee is the definition of modest when it comes to his work on “Saturday Night Live.” “If it looks good, I always think it’s by accident,” he told IndieWire recently from his studio in Connecticut. “I only see the mistakes. But guess what? You have the chance to make it better next week.”

In addition to its more than three billion global monthly video views, 200 million unique monthly visitors to its web destination, and ingenious social media and content distribution strategies, BuzzFeed has something else to brag about. Its homegrown video stars.
The site that's home to innumerable listicles, millennial-inclined quizzes, and actual hard news (peppered with its fair share of investigative journalism) has produced fully-fledged social media and online video celebrities by way of its careful consideration of emotionally-engaging content. BuzzFeed Motion Pictures President, Ze Frank empowers a crafty team of multi-hyphenates (all of whom write, shoot, and edit their own videos) to create content made for niches, but that's appealing to the masses. Eugene Lee’s play "East Texas Hot Links" is heading to the big screen with the help of Samuel L. Jackson, who has signed up to executive produce the project. According to Deadline, Lee (a veteran of the stage and screen, and a playwright) will adapt his own play, as well as direct the film version, with production set for spring 2016. The one-act play, which premiered in Los Angeles in 1991, is comic/tragic slice of black life in rural Texas in 1955, set in a modest cafe in the piney woods, and takes place entirely in a single night, and is described as "a dynamic, ruthless portrayal of self-interest and betrayal. The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

Supposedly retired, former Biff director Kim Dong-ho still works with the festival, heads a presidential committee and is running a cinematic graduate school at Dankook University.
As we got on the elevator at the Grand Hotel the other day, a Busan film fest regular greeted Kim Dong-ho saying, “Oh, hello, Mr. Kim! Busy in your retirement?” Probably only half joking because almost all the regulars know Busan’s founding festival director can barely be described as retired.
Although he ostensibly, officially left the Busan International Film Festival (Biff) after the 2010 edition, Kim has continued to play a part as honorary festival director welcoming guests, travelling to other festivals, and occasionally smoothing out problems for the organisation. By the end of this year, he will have gone to at least eight overseas festivals including Berlin, Cannes, Venice and Locarno.

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

Director Jonathan Demme captures the team of Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory staging a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s “The Master Builder.”
The dynamic duo behind My Dinner with Andre and Vanya on 42nd Street take on another classic of the stage in their big-screen Henrik Ibsen adaptation, Fear of Falling.
With Jonathan Demme replacing the late Louis Malle at the helm, this terrifically performed version of The Master Builder -- based on a screenplay by Wallace Shawn, from his own translation of the Norwegian text -- channels the rage, joy and delusions of an aging architect’s final days, where a ghost from his past (played by the exuberant Lisa Joyce) guides him to the great beyond. Premiering in the Rome Film Festival’s experimental CinemaXXI section, this dense and occasionally poetic chamber piece should appeal to very upscale audiences both at fests and -- despite production values...

Marlon Brando is so seared in our minds as Stanley Kowalski from "Streetcar Named Desire" that it takes an actor with true presence, a raw intensity and not a little bit of swagger to play him without comparisons to Brando popping up constantly.
Blair Underwood has all of that, and so very much more in the superior production of Tennessee Williams' masterpiece at the Broadhurst Theatre. The play does not have the happier Hollywood ending the 1951 movie has, and that wasn't exactly a day brightener.
Emily Mann's direction reveals Williams' rougher, grittier and far grimmer play. And it is glorious. You will feel as if you need to sit in a dark room and decompress for a while after. Twelve hours after leaving the nearly two-and-a-half hour production, I still feel this way. But if you are very lucky, you will see this limited run.

The feature film Wolf, by Texan writer and director Ya'Ke Smith, is the story of a black family dealing with the fallout from their son's molestation by the bishop of their church. I specify "black" because Smith is telling the story from an African-American cultural perspective, which informs the actions of every character. Smith shot the film in his own church, with the blessing of his bishop, after hearing the stories of many friends who had undergone similar experiences.
In his acting debut, Jordan Cooper portrays Carl, a young man dealing with feelings of confusion and rejection after Bishop Anderson (Eugene Lee), feeling guilty for molesting him, has broken off the relationship. Carl's feelings escalate until they precipitate a suicide attempt. In the hospital, his parents discover what's been going on thanks to photos and video on his phone. While they encounter opposition from church leaders in their pursuit of justice against the bishop,...

Featuring Irma P. Hall, Eugene Lee, Jordan Cooper, Shelton Jolivette, Mikala Gibson
While the topic of molestation among church officials and vulnerable members of the congregation is one that has been explored thoroughly in many different films, TV shows and books, rarely has it hit home as acutely as in the new film Wolf, which debuted at SXSW. The film, written and directed by Ya’Ke Smith, brings the situation into the setting of a black congregation.
Nona (Gibson) is a powerful, strong, intelligent young woman working hard to put herself through college to become a psychiatrist while her husband Jaymund (Jolivette) is a long-distance truck driver. Nona is raising her teenage son Carl (Cooper), who from the opening scene is shown to be a withdrawn, disturbed young man on the verge of complete mental breakdown and in the business of self-harm behind closed doors.

Espn will follow up on its critically hailed "30 for 30" series of documentaries with a new slate of films, including one on the infamous Steve Bartman game in the 2003 National League Championship Series, in the fall.
The Bartman movie, "Catching Hell," will kick off the fall run on Sept. 27. It's directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney ("Taxi to the Dark Side") and will delve into why Chicago Cubs fans were so eager to make Bartman -- a fan who's blamed for costing the Cubs a World Series spot in 2003 (never mind that Cubs pitchers went on to give up eight runs in the same inning) -- a scapegoat. Gibney, a Red Sox fan, then looks at his own anger at Bill Buckner's gaffe in the 1986 World Series.
"Catching Hell" was initially scheduled to be part of "30 for 30" but was pushed back a couple times.
The Espn Films documentaries will air on successive Tuesdays through Nov.
