- Partly responsible for getting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to start awarding a yearly Oscar for Best Costume Design, which they only began doing in 1948. Several years earlier, he had lobbied the Academy through the studio he was working for at the time,20th Century-Fox.
- Ex-vaudevillian, who became a noted costumer on Broadway in 1921, working on top shows like the "Ziegfeld Follies", "[xxxxxxx]'s Scandals", "[xxxxx]'s Vanities", and others. Under contract to 20th Century-Fox (1943-49), as supervising costume designer and head of the wardrobe department. Assembled a very strong team of designers, but continued to work himself, designing for his favorite stars. Left Fox in 1949 to open his own salon. Retired in 1962.
