James Corden, host of “The Late Late Show” since 2015, spoke candidly from the stage of The Paley Center in Los Angeles on Sunday. The London-born 44-year-old comic and two producers on his CBS late-night show, Ben Winston and Rob Crabbe, took something of a victory lap as they wind down their tenure in the 12:30 time slot. They have 12 more episodes to shoot, and are planning some big names (and more carpool karaoke segments) for the grand finale.
Bryan Cranston (a good get!) hosted the panel, during which time Corden spoke about the uncertainty he feels about his future employment. “I haven’t felt this scared since I decided to take the show, to move here,” he said. “I haven’t felt on such unstable ground,” but added, “I have to embrace that fear.”
He intends to bring his family back to England and hopes to get back to live theater.

When NBC handed David Letterman Late Night in 1982, his offbeat humor ushered in a new era of late night.
Thirty-three years later, he's stepping down from a late-night landscape that changed around him, having stayed true to himself as the medium changed from appointment viewing to something to be easily digested the next morning in three- to four-minute clips.
"I recognized the value of it," Letterman told The New York Times back in April of his competitors' tendency to gear their shows toward digital audiences. "It's just, I didn't know what to say. You go back to your parents' house,...

Richard Zoglin is the author of Hope: Entertainer of the Century, published this week by Simon & Schuster and cited by reviewers as the definitive biography of the comedy legend. In its current issue, People singles it out as the book of the week. Here, an excerpt from the work.Viewers of The Tonight Show during the 1970s and '80s might have assumed that Bob Hope was one of Johnny Carson's favorite guests. No one appeared on the show more often than the comedy legend, and his guest appearances clung to a familiar, almost comical ritual. He would walk...

Jay Leno is jumping across the network divide at the end of the month to appear on CBS’ The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, Deadline has learned. It marks the first time the NBC host will appear on CBS’ 12:30 Am late-night talker. Ferguson was on The Tonight Show last year for the first time since 1997, promoting Disney’s Winnie The Pooh movie. The host first mentioned the possibility of Leno coming last week during an appearance at the Paley Center. Behind the scenes, an insider says Late Late Show executive producer Peter Lassally — who worked for Letterman and before that Johnny Carson — personally called his Tonight Show counterpart Debbie Vickers to arrange the Leno appearance on Late Late Show, which is produced by Leno’s longtime rival David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants. Earlier this year, CBS took partial ownership of The Late Late Show from Worldwide Pants when...

Not 'Mad' about 'em Don Draper might need a stiff one after AMC's hyped- to-kingdom-come "Mad Men" took a tumble in its second episode Sunday night, averaging 1.3 million viewers - a dropoff of 36 percent from its July 27 season opener (2.1 million viewers). Sun day's episode also tumbled 34 percent in households and a whopping 41 percent in per sons 18-49, according to Niel sen. For the uninitiated, Draper (Jon Hamm) is the show's philandering, not- who-you- think-he-is '60s-era Madison Avenue ad exec.

CBS' The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson has hired an outside talent booking agency. Late Late Show producer Worldwide Pants has retained JB Talent to handle guest booking for the late-night show, something that previously was done internally. JB Talent was founded in 2005 by former Entertainment Tonight supervising producer Jen Kasle Furmaniak.
"In the three years since Craig Ferguson took over as host, 'The Late Late Show' has developed rapidly -- both in our viewing audience and in the quality of the show," the show's executive producer Peter Lassally said. "With Jen's help, we now feel we have the capability for our guest bookings to keep pace with our growth."
Late Late Show follows in the footsteps of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, which two years ago also switched from in-house booking to an outside agency, Central Talent Booking.

There has been a changing of the guard behind the scenes at CBS' The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson. Peter Lassally, a veteran producer and alumnus of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and CBS' Late Show With David Letterman, has been tapped as executive producer of the late-night strip, produced by Letterman's Worldwide Pants production banner. Comedian Ferguson took over hosting duties on the show in January from original frontman Craig Kilborn. "We are fortunate to have in Peter a legend of late-night television, whose years with Johnny Carson and David Letterman make him uniquely qualified to guide Craig Ferguson and 'The Late Late Show' into the future," Worldwide Pants CEO Rob Burnett said. Lassally will continue in his role as senior vp late-night at Worldwide Pants in addition to his exec producing duties.

NEW YORK -- David Letterman's Monday night tribute to his mentor Johnny Carson was Late Show's highest-rated show in almost two years. According to fast-affiliate data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, CBS' Late Show With David Letterman delivered a 6.0 household rating/15 share Monday night. The show featured Letterman's remarks -- and jokes secretly written for him by Carson before his Jan. 23 death -- and guests Peter Lassally, a longtime producer of NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Doc Severinsen, Carson's longtime bandleader. Letterman's tribute came a week later than The Tonight Show With Jay Leno because Letterman's show wasn't in production last week. Tonight Show delivered a 4.9/12 on Monday. Last week, Leno chalked up near-record ratings with his Jan. 24 Carson tribute episode, which pulled in an 11.2 household rating/26 share.
