Spoilers ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after tonight’s performance show, which was guest-judged by renowned dance expert Carly Rae Jepsen. She specializes in the esteemed genre “Pop Carwash.”
I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Mariah Spears and Dorian “BluPrint” Hector have been eliminated.
Mackenzie, Jenna, Alan, and Curtis also landed in the bottom six.
The judges asked all but Jenna to dance for their lives.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson — “weird and creepy and not a stalker,” he swears — just loves to come back and be a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance. The Modern Family star invented the Hot Jalapeno Bus (a new friend for Mary Murphy’s Hot Tamale Train), and poignantly called out Will’s personal-story junket (“Dance saved my life…”) as a reason why arts programs are so important to schools. He is, quite simply, the best.

Less than 24 hours after So You Think You Can Dance frontrunner Melanie Moore received 47 percent of the vote to be named America’s Favorite Dancer, she shared her feelings with EW. “I feel so blessed,” she says. Then in uncharacteristic fashion, the Georgia pixie admitted that she was confident going in to the finale because she was ”out for blood.” So what else did Melanie have to say that will surprise you? What was her one complaint about the show, and where does she see herself after the tour (hint: there may be a watermelon coming her way!)? Read Melanie’s interview after the jump.

Nigel not happy with the finale, drops jaws of all the judges!
Yes, last night was a roller coaster ride with some great highlights and perhaps the lowest low I’ve seen on the show in a long time. What initially put some of us into a finale funk was the disco that started the show. It felt flat, labored, and even though it was danced by two of the most solid performers, Marko and Melanie, they were not able to connect to the style. My heart slightly dropped for both of them.

Melanie and Marko’s stilted disco routine on last night’s So You Think You Can Dance performance finale really bummed me out. “Oh nooooooooo. Disco,” I shuddered. I’d forgotten all about it. Must disco still exist? For contestants looking to gain last-minute momentum, the disco seems as death-kissy as the dreaded foxtrot or, God forbid, a Russian nesting doll dance or whatever. “Has anyone Ever liked a disco routine on #Sytycd? Die die die!” I tweeted feverishly, for I had just scraped up the last of my spicy gouda party spread directly from a small stone plate with my teeth.

Seriously? That’s it? It’s over? This is my last Sytycd blog for EW.com? I feel like I blinked and missed half of it. (I was probably on a plane.)
All kidding aside, before we dive into our discussion of last night’s performances, I hope you’ll indulge me while I say thank you for coming along for this wild ride, for sharing your thoughts and letting me share mine, and for all the nice notes and comments and questions you’ve sent. You made me feel very welcome, and this whole thing has been a blast for me!

Travis Wall is sad to report that you will not see him in this week’s So You Think You Can Dance two-part finale. The Emmy-nominated choreographer, and season 2 Sytycd runner-up, tells EW, “I was supposed to do the finale, but I had to cancel because I got the movie.” Indeed, Wall is currently in Miami creating contemporary pieces for Step Up 4, starring season 6 contestant, and season 7 and 8 All Star, Kathryn McCormick. “It’s my first movie to choreograph,” he says. “I’m really excited.”

Talk about a season going Fast! I feel like the auditions were just yesterday. We have had so much fun watching all the talent. And fun at the judges’ table as well.
Speaking of judges, guest judge Christina Applegate was funny and so easy to get along with. I asked her what her favorite number of the night was, and she answered, hands down, it was Tyce Diorio’s contemporary starring Sasha with all-star Kent Boyd. This has been a really surprising and refreshing season. Too bad I’m talking about the guest judges rather than the dancers. Last night, Christina Applegate offered up a nice mix of compliments, criticism, and technical know-how. As it were, her diligent research and thoughtful comments were pretty lost on a boring, unremarkable night. Other than Melanie’s solo and Sasha’s contemporary with Kent, the stand-outs were few and few between. Was this the lamest Top 6 ever? Or were you pleased with how the dancers performed? Do you think last night’s snoozefest will be redeemed tonight with some unexpected D4YL performances?...

In the eight seasons of So You Think You Can Dance, tonight’s show was the most exciting I’ve ever had. If Lady Gaga wasn’t enough, throw in film director Rob Marshall onto the judging panel! It was so surreal to sit next to celebrities that I admire that have so adored our show from the beginning. You know they are true fans when, during commercial breaks, they are chatting about contestants from season 1. How cool is that? And if the judging panel didn’t do it for you, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, and Katie Holmes were in the audience.

Gaga throwing shoes! Marko weeping! Sasha getting her Fierce back (in no small part thanks to Pasha, I am convinced). Last night was an eventful and powerful performance episode, to say the least. Who was your favorite, and who do you think should go home? Are you starting to feel the Melanie backlash, or do you think she’s got it in the bag? How pumped are you about whatever batty costume(s) Gaga will don during her performance? Is it starting to hit you that the show is on the upswing when there are only a few weeks left?...

TV makes me cry disproportionately more than real-life, so I was a little confused when the camera panned to tear-stained Lady Gaga after Marko’s performance last night, and I sat there with dry eyes. Don’t get me wrong. His performance was gorgeous and very touching, but tear-worthy? I’m not so sure.
I’m sure the song — Jeff Buckley’s “I Know It’s Over” — played a major part in the weeping effect the piece had on The Gaga. It’s a hauntingly lovely tune that was a perfect fit for the message of the dance. But is my heart going cold?...

The first time I’d ever heard of Lady Gaga was three years ago, during the Top 6 results show of So You Think You Can Dance’s fourth season. Re-watching it now, I’m struck by a few things immediately: TV sunglasses! Pointy shoulder pads! Crotch gestures! Light-up scepters! Strong vocals!

So You Think You Can Dance welcomed Jesse Tyler Ferguson to the judging panel this week for the Top 12 live performances. The Modern Family star joined Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Sonya Tayeh to have his say on the remaining contestants taking part in Wednesday night's live show. Each couple had to perform two dances. Here's what the judges said: Sasha and Alexander - Paso Doble Dance: Choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin, the dance is described as a "battle with love and hate and masculinity". Alexander says that his character is "ready to kill" and Sasha jokes she will "beat his ass". It ends in a kiss. Nigel praises the routine, adding that Alexander had a job keeping up with Sasha. He adds that although Alexander got a little sloppy at the end, he was much stronger than he has been recently. (more)...

You want to be in the top 10? You can't handle the top 10!
And as much as effusive "Modern Family" star and guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson would like all the dancers to carry on for another week, two more members of the "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 8 cast will fall during Thursday's results.
So before we tear these happy partnerships apart, forcing the remaining 10 into the strong, experienced arms of the "Sytycd" all-stars, they get one more night together.
And two dances.
But who made the best of their first double feature -- and who's almost definitely dancing for their life this week? We've got analysis, couple by couple, right here:
Alexander and Sasha
Dance #1: Tony Meredith and Melanie Lapatin (she of the greatest "Sytycd" moment ever) choreograph a postmodern Paso Doble where the dancers play dueling matadors. The judges don't go overboard in their praise, but...

Well, Wednesday night’s show was like no other. Have we gone too far with sexually explicit numbers and themes? Even the judges went temporarily insane! This is my perspective on the kissing scene gone wild. I was mesmerized with Marko and Melanie; again, beautiful choreography told a story of love and in the middle of the number they had a passionate kiss. Anyone who was secretly hoping that Lmfao would perform an elaborate hip-hop remix of “Aba Daba Honeymoon” while Debbie Reynolds danced with Rage Crew was probably a little bit disappointed during tonight’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Eagle-eyed viewers of last night’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance noticed a brief audience shot at the end of the show featuring several alumni from past seasons. I personally caught a glimpse of season 5′s Kayla Radomski, season 6′s Kathryn McCormick, and season 7′s Robert Roldan and Kent Boyd, who miraculously still has not been fed past midnight and transformed into a gremlin. And, oh yeah, I also saw Alex Freaking Wong.

My first thought after last week’s surprise non-elimination on So You Think You Can Dance was the the bottom seven dancers dodged a major bullet. Maybe I was just in a cranky mood, maybe my snark demon Smirkelstiltskin was just in a fabulous mood, but I was underwhelmed by almost all of their dance-for-your-life solos, especially the ones by the two best known dancers among them: Jordan “I Wanna Be a Pussycat Doll Alternate on the ‘B’ National Tour” Casanova and Robert “I Wanna Be an Electric Company Cast Member Circa 1975″ Taylor Jr. Had I been Nigel, I would...

Tonight’s episode featured the most boring, derivative GaGa video yet! Keri Hilson performed, and the highest bouncing Russian evah. Oh yeah, and there were eliminations on tap. In the wake of Clarence Clemons’ unexpected stroke and a clear underestimation of how long this particular show would take, the judges demanded an unprecedented nine dance-for-your-life performances. Spoiler: But in the end, one couple had to go… Or did they? In fact, no one went home this week. Which sets the stage for a blood bath next week in which two couples will go home. Bring it, Lythgoe.

Leading Ladies is a quirky but charming comedy with a classical sensibility. Co-directed by Daniel Beahm and Erika Randall Beahm, the film is about two sisters and their overbearing stage mother, once a champion dancer. The light, playful nature of the film is evident from the opening credits. Great care was taken in staging, choreographing and staging the entire film to work whimsically with the musical score.

Meredith Hoffa: Sytycd's season six results are in and I couldn't be more bonkers-thrilled. I cannot believe there is not some sort of parade I can partake in.

Russell Ferguson made "So You Think You Can Dance" history this week, becoming the first finalist to lose his partner to injury twice, being forced to perform with last second fill-ins.

As the competition gets down to the final 10 of "So You Think You Can Dance" season 5, new rules are set, placing the judges out of the decision-making and giving America a chance to vote for individuals. Though the dancers now have to fight for American votes individually, they will still perform in couples, but there's a twist: each week they will get different partner. For this week, Kayla was paired with Evan, Ade with Janette, Jeanine with Jason, Kupono and Randi, and Brandon with Melissa.

Teaching has proved to be a vital secondary skill in the development of many dancers' professional careers. It can be a valuable method of supplementing your income between performing jobs — both at the start of your career, when you're just beginning to build your reputation and résumé, and as you near the end of your performing tenure, as a way to stay employed in the profession. For midcareer dancers who may want to move into jobs as dance captains or assistant choreographers, strong teaching skills are essential. Even choreographers rely heavily on teaching gigs to try out new material, as well as to scope out dancers they're interested in hiring. If you're looking to expand your repertoire of teaching styles, pedagogical strategies, and choreographic or kinesiological information, there is still time to register for Dance Teacher magazine's summer conference, to be held Aug. 9-11 at New York City's Jacob K.
