Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Talk about a warm welcome. Brian d’Arcy James tells me that Steven Spielberg surprised him during his first day of shooting on the much-buzzed-about “West Side Story” remake. “Steven Spielberg has this fantastic tradition of stopping after the first shot that you’re in, and basically announcing and applauding anybody who has entered into the making of the movie,” says James, who plays Sgt. Krupke. “The first scene that I was in, I was way in the back — I might as well have been wallpaper. He says, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Brian d’Arcy James is in the movie!’ And then he went on and did that for everyone else too.”
It didn’t take long after Spielberg announced he was remaking the classic that some wondered why he would tinker with such a beloved film. James defends the decision, pointing to the...

Comedy and industry politics mixed Tuesday night at The Hollywood Improv, site of a fundraiser for SAG-AFTRA candidate Matthew Modine and his Membership First slate.
“He looks like Hal Holbrook,” Tom Arnold joked. “He’s aged 100 years.”
Modine is challenging incumbent SAG-aftra President Gabrielle Carteris and three other candidates for the top elected post at the 160,000-member performers union. With two more weeks of campaigning before voting concludes on Aug. 28, the funds raised are earmarked for mailings to members.
Modine noted he’s been so busy that he’s lacked the time to see a dentist about a missing tooth. “Running for office isn’t what I expected,” he said before taking the stage.
Lisa Ann Walter hosted with comedy provided by Arnold, Rick Overton, Cathy Ladman, Julie Goldman, Vinny Fasline, Candice Thompson, and Steve Byrne.

"Listen to me - don't come back." Indican Pictures has debuted a trailer for an indie Los Angeles-set comedy titled The Happys, about a girl from the Midwest who moves into the trendy hipster neighborhood of Los Feliz. Tracy befriends the various weirdos from her neighborhood after a bad break up with hey boyfriend, meeting a recluse, a manager, a reporter, and a food truck chef, among others. Amanda Bauer (from "The Myth of the American Sleepover") stars, and the ensemble cast includes Jack DePew, Janeane Garofalo, Melissa McBride, Rhys Ward, Arturo del Puerto, Cathy Ladman, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and Will Bethencourt. This seems like one of those cutesy La movies that is all about how hard/easy it is to make friends in that town, perfectly depicting all the various quirks of Los Feliz. Oh, Los Angeles. Have fun. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Tom Gould & John Serpe's The Happys,...

The price of dying is as expensive as the price of living apparently.
At least that's what comedienne Cathy Ladman (HBO's One Night Stand) says during this week's StandUp in Stilettos, which is hosted by The Office's Kate Flannery. How'd she find this out? A coupon for ash burial at sea. Oh boy! Find out how expensive it really is in this sneak peek below:

Tonight's column is pretty low stress for me; I know most people are still busy drooling over the Pajiba Ten so my readership will probably be very low as I'm not posting multiple pictures of hot celebrities. No, I only get whatever is on TV tonight to draw people in and that's, well, it's mostly crap as we've previously discussed. I can basically say whatever I want to. Banana. Pickle farts. Humdinger. Eyeballs. Here's what's on TV tonight if you can bear to leave your bunk to watch it:
8:00pm: "Big Brother" on CBS
"Minute to Win It" on NBC
"PBS Special: Breakfast Special" on PBS. That just makes me think of Denny's, which is only good either really early in the morning, really late at night, or those strange couple hours that are kind of both. No, that has nothing to do with PBS. Whatever.
