Since season one of “The Chi” ended with Ronnie (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine) confessing to murder, Mwine worried “that might be the end of me. You might not see this character again.” Luckily for the actor, the writers “gave me so much to do this year. It’s really been a blessing.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mwine above.
In the first season of this Lena Waithe-created series for Showtime about life on the South Side of Chicago, Ronnie desperately tried to prove his love to Tracy (Tai Davis). When Tracy’s son was murdered he killed Coogie (Jahking Guillory), the young man he suspected committed the crime. But it turned out he went after the wrong guy, and Coogie’s older brother, Brandon (Jason Mitchell), vowed to bring his murderer to justice.

Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine was initially “terrified” of “The Chi” because “it wasn’t a world I was familiar with, so I wasn’t sure that I could actually portray it.” The son of immigrants, Mwine knew nothing about the South Side of Chicago in which the Lena Waithe-created series is set. “We have issues of authenticity,” he explains, “which has been a big debate about who has the right to tell what story.” So when he auditioned for the Showtime ensemble drama, he “was actually scared.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mwine above.

Chicago native Yolonda Ross was excited to participate in “The Chi” because it presented her city “in a positive way.” Though crime happens everywhere, “Chicago really has gotten a bad rap,” so Ross was compelled by the way that creator Lena Waithe made “characters and situations personal, so that people could get how some of these things can actually happen.” This Showtime ensemble drama, also starring Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine and Sonja Sohn, examines life on the South Side of Chicago and ended its 10-episode first season in March. It will be back for a second season. Watch our exclusive video interview with Ross above.
