Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart), Ann Woodward (Demi Moore) and Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald). The previous season of the Ryan Murphy docudrama that starred Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis nabbed 18 Emmy Award nominations and two wins. Welcome back, dear readers! We’ve nearly made it through another week and December is (quite literally) just right around the corner. And since the holiday season is pretty much upon us, we’re back with another installment of our annual Holiday Gift Guide. For today, I’m celebrating a handful of books that I have either had the chance to check out this year and fell in love with, or several titles that I’m confident genre fans will love that I just haven’t had a chance to check out yet for myself.
To make things easier, I’ve sorted the books into two categories: non-ficton and fiction. And also, just so everything is on the up-and-up, I want to mention that I did include my own latest book in today’s edition of the Hgg just because the artists featured in this second volume of Monsters, Makeup...

The race for makeup and hair is particularly noteworthy this season. It includes transforming Viola Davis into the pioneering blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” turning Glenn Close into the fiery Appalachian grandmother of “Hillbilly Elegy,” adding floral flourishes to Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular matchmaker in “Emma,” meticulously recreating Hollywood’s Golden Age in black-and-white in “Mank,” and creating a unique wooden look to the titular puppet of “Pinocchio.”
But with the Academy tilting toward transforming real-life people in recent years, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” is the favorite, especially after its sweep of the coveted Muahs Guild Awards. Plus, Davis is the favorite in the Best Actress race. She landed her fourth Oscar nomination — the most of any Black actress — as the sexy, subversive Rainey. And the actress was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude with the help of gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair. She tapped her personal makeup stylist,...

When Glenn Close took on the role of Mamaw, the tough but tender grandmother to J.D. Vance in “Hillbilly Elegy,” one of her first calls was to an acclaimed makeup and prosthetics designer. “Team Mamaw started with Matthew Mungle, who had worked with me on ‘Albert Nobbs,’” says Close. “I did not want to see myself when I looked the mirror as Mamaw because I am so different from her in life. I wanted the audience to not see Glenn Close.”
Like Close herself, Mungle is nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film, along with makeup department head Eryn Krueger Mekash and hair department head Patricia Dehaney. Mungle knew he and Close had similar philosophies about prosthetics.
“Glenn knows I will always come from the direction of not cover an actor’s face with prosthetics,” he says. “I believe it can inhibit their performance, especially if...

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.
“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

Hair, make-up and costumes are all are powerful tools in storytelling and each add to the authenticity of the narrative. For “Shirley,” costume designer Amela Baksic immersed herself in researching archival photos of horror and mystery writer Shirley Jackson. She also relied on Life magazine photo essays to look at college life in the 1940s.
“Those archives provided me with examples of clothes that expressed a bohemian quality of student life that was casual and relaxed,” Baksic says.
Since so much of the film was about Jackson’s mind and the struggles of the creative writing process, Baksic says the key was “to fit Elisabeth Moss in a range of costumes that would enhance her inner moods and different personas.”
Those costumes ranged from slips and house dresses to reflect the different moods of Shirley. “She wore [those] when she was depressed and catatonic, as opposed to a more masculine look...

“The best step you can take as an actor or actress is not worrying about what you look like, and going into the character instead,” says Matthew Mungle, who created prosthetic makeup design and prosthetics for Glenn Close’s transformation into the nearly unrecognizable Mamaw Vance for “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Mungle, who worked with Close on “Albert Nobbs,” got a call from her in March 2019 telling him that she had secured her next role and required his help. Close sent him a photo of the real Mamaw Vance, a fierce hillbilly who plays a central role in raising her grandson. Mamaw’s life has been marked by poverty and family dysfunction, without time or money for skin care or hair products, so her look is rough around the edges.

Although Netflix’s seven-episode limited series “Hollywood” took an alternate history approach to the types of movies being made — and the people allowed to make them — in its plot, nuances and visual details in the story had to pull directly from the reality of the post-World War II era. This included everything from production design and costumes to hair and makeup.
“I wanted it to be very much straight down the line, stereotypical, everything that happened and how it looked — because we also want to play into the fact that this should have been how it was,” says Eryn Krueger Mekash, makeup department head, “Hollywood.” (She is now nominated in the non-prosthetic period/character makeup category at the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards.)

One of the best ways to get yourselves into the Halloween spirit is by checking out the very first installment of Into the Dark, the brand new original series from Blumhouse TV and Hulu, that will be delivering up 12 horror films, debuting on the first Friday of every month, over the course of the next year. Kicking off the launch of Into the Dark is Paul Davis’ The Body, which is based on his 2013 award-winning short film of the very same name, expanding this story of a killer who must transport his latest victim to a new locale, and thankfully it happens to be Halloween night, which means a guy walking down the streets with a corpse in tow doesn’t seem all that weird.

While the 2018 Emmy Awards did a good job of spreading the wealth this year, there were still multiple nominees who walked away with a handful of trophies. Mega-producer Ryan Murphy won Best Limited Series for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” as well as Best Directing after four consecutive losses for other programs. But Amy Sherman-Palladino was the biggest winner of the live ceremony, taking home not one, not two, but three Emmys for producing, directing and writing “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” This is on top of her win at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend for Best Music Supervision. Despite launching multiple critically acclaimed series over the years, these are Sherman-Palladino’s first Emmy wins.

To create infamous cult leaders (“American Horror Story: Cult”), a legendary painter (“Genius: Picasso”), a world-renowned designer (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) and the alter-egos of 1930s Hollywood (“The Last Tycoon”) — not to mention the return of one of the most beloved characters in television (Kyle MacLachlan’s FBI agent Dale Cooper in “Twin Peaks”) — the challenges in non-prosthetic makeup were equal parts honoring history and creating a legacy.

As expected, the Creative Arts Emmy competition Sunday turned out to be a sci-fi smackdown between Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld,” and each split the night with five awards apiece.
The Duffer Brothers’ ’80s homage to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, “Stranger Things” won for outstanding editing, main title theme music, main title design, sound editing, and casting. The Jonathan Nolan/ Lisa Joy sci-fi/western, “Westworld,” earned outstanding special visual effects (the domain of “Game of Thrones” five years running), makeup (non-prosthetic), hairstyling, sound mixing, and creative achievement in interactive media.
However, if recent history proves a reliable harbinger, “Stranger Things” has the edge in the race for next Sunday’s Outstanding Series competition because of its editing victory. That’s because the last five outstanding editing winners have also taken home the big prize.

Old Hollywood retro glam makes FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” the perfect Emmy contender for costume, makeup, and hair. The bitter personal rivalry between Emmy-nominated Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange), which heated up during their co-starring in the 1962 horror movie, “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?,” was fueled by the fear and insecurity of two fading stars.
Showrunner Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story”) recreates the era when the studio system was in decline and the two once-bright stars were struggling to stay in the game. For Murphy’s Emmy-winning team of costume designer Lou Eyrich, makeup designer Eryn Krueger Mekash, and hair department head Chris Clark, it was an opportunity to embrace the twilight of Hollywood’s Golden Age in grand style.

The first time I ever met Paul Davis was at a HorrorHound convention back in 2007. He was there presenting some footage from his amazing documentary, Beware The Moon, a celebration of all things An American Werewolf in London. His passion and enthusiasm for John Landis’ film, as well as for the horror genre as a whole, immediately struck me, and I’ve been following his career in the realms of filmmaking and writing ever since.
His latest literary endeavor, Lost in the Shadows: The Story of The Lost Boys, is currently available for pre-order Here, and arrives just in time for the 30th anniversary of Joel Schumacher’s landmark horror comedy. Daily Dead recently caught up with Davis to hear more about how Lost in the Shadows came together, his progression from werewolves to vampires, his experiences catching up with the cast and crew of The Lost Boys, and more.

The two standouts in the makeup and hair races for imagination and glam are definitely “American Horror Story: Hotel” (limited series) and “The Wiz Live!” (special).
“Ahsh” was like Halloween every day with a gallery of ghouls ranging from Lady Gaga’s fashionista vampire, the Countess, to Alex Ward’s creepy Addiction Demon with his drill bit dildo, to Denis O’Hare’s scene-stealing transgender bartender, Liz Taylor.
Meanwhile, “The Wiz” upped the live musical for TV by blending the Broadway show and movie into a new urban experience.
Lady Gaga’s 111-year-old Countess was the centerpiece for both makeup designer Eryn Kruger Mekash and hairstylist Monte Haught. Gaga had the opportunity to show off 65 glam looks throughout the 20th century. The actress’ personal makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, collaborated with Mekash on the designs, and Mekash’s husband, Mike, did all of the blood-related prosthetics.

For makeup designer Eryn Kruger Mekash, every day was like Halloween on “American Horror Story: Hotel,” with a gallery of ghouls ranging from Lady Gaga’s fashionista vampire, the Countess, to Alex Ward’s creepy Addiction Demon with his a drill bit dildo, to Denis O’Hare’s scene-stealing transgender bartender, Liz Taylor.
Plus, there was an assortment of victims— most of them junkies— either sewn together or to the mattress of a bed, requiring challenging prosthetics.
“We had a lot of blood gags this season— more sliced throats than we usually do,” Mekash said. “So getting all those rigged and keeping the challenges of actual production up was a lot of work. They shot two or three episodes a day with three units, which meant a lot of prosthetic organization.”
The 111-year-old Countess runs the mysterious Hotel Cortez in Hollywood, and Gaga had the opportunity to show off 65 glam looks throughout the 20th century. The actress’ personal makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, collaborated with Mekash on the designs, and Mekash’s husband, Mike, did all of the blood-related prosthetics.
“She was turned into a vampire in the late ’20s, so we established all of the looks with Rudolph Valentino and his wife, Natacha Rambova [the costume and set designer],” Mekash recalled. “We saw ’30s makeup and the ’70s, which was her big heyday with disco, and then there was a time in the ’80s with Angela Bassetts’ character [Ramona Royale]. Then we had the modern-day stuff, which was incredibly glamorous.”
Speaking of Bassett’s Royale, her look ran the gamut from Diana Ross in “Mahogany” to various Blaxploitation actresses.
But, of course, Gaga’s Countess wasn’t the only vampire. There was also the young brother and sister. “I wanted to keep the vampire children subtle with pink, shiny makeup with dark circles to make it seem like there was extra blood in their bodies,” added Mekash.
The biggest challenge was The Addiction Demon, which took four-and-a-half hours to apply each day with a team of three artists. Created by Dave Anderson of Afx, he was wrapped in layers of sheets and covered in transparent jelly.
“Initially, it was all foam with prosthetics underneath, and there were layers and layers of silicone and also silicone liquid that could be made into sheets,” Mekash explained. “There was a chest piece and arm pieces and a facial mask that was glued down. Alex was covered from tip to toe— it was almost total sensory deprivation.”
For Liz Taylor, O’Hare endured a total body shave and showed off gold, red, black and blue sets of nails throughout the season.
“His look was patterned after Taylor in ‘Cleopatra’ and the eye makeup was inspired by an old bartender that [creator] Ryan Murphy met a long time ago,” Mekash said. “It was the first time that Denis ever wore such makeup.”

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards.
