Amazon has set its cast for The Peripheral, its upcoming original series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films. Charlotte Riley (A Christmas Carol), JJ Feild (Lost in Space), Adelind Horan (The Deuce), T’Nia Miller (The Haunting of Bly Manor) and Alex Hernandez (Bloodshot) have been cast as leads opposite Chloë Grace Moretz and Jack Reynor in the sci-fi thriller drama, based on the bestselling novel by William Gibson.
Created by Scott B. Smith, The Peripheral is described as a dazzling, hallucinatory glimpse into the fate of mankind — and what lies beyond.
The book centers on Flynne (Moretz) and her brother Burton (Reynor). In the novel, Burton, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps’ elite Haptic Recon force, is hired for a security job which takes place in what he thinks is cyberspace. When Flynne temporarily takes his place, she witnesses something that might have been murder.

Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.
In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

"Fate left you a footstep..." The Orchard has debuted the trailer for an indie comedy titled Wanderland, from director Josh Klausner, which premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival on Long Island last year. Wanderland stars Tate Ellington as Alex, a guy who decides to escape his life in New York City and ends up at a "Enchanted Cottage" on Long Island. There he "ends up lost on a surreal musical all-night odyssey of misadventures." Whoa. The cast includes Tara Summers, Victoria Clark, Jack Dishel, Harris Yulin, Adepero Oduye, and Dree Hemingway. Klausner explained that the film is about "connection in the modern world — how we’re more technically linked to each other than ever before, but we’re in danger of losing the magic of direct, face to face human interaction, with all of its surprises and unknowns." How fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Klausner's Wanderland,...

There are no action-stopping song-and-dance numbers in Wanderland, but more than a few of the gently offbeat comedy's characters pick up guitars and sing. Following a city dweller's perambulatory and often bizarre adventures through the East End of Long Island, writer-director Josh Klausner set out to make "a film with a live soundtrack" rather than a conventional musical, and the results have an unforced, Diy charm.
The low-key indie is a decided departure for Klausner, whose screenwriting credits include Date Night and Shrek Forever After, and who started his Hollywood career as an assistant to the Farrelly brothers. Working with...

Editor’s note: Nearly 20 years after making his feature directorial debut, Josh Klausner’s latest feature film, the musical “Wanderland,” is set for its world premiere. Klausner’s path from indie film and back again is a unique one, including stopovers in the studio world alongside big names like Peter and Bobby Farrelly, Paul McCartney, and Shrek himself.
We asked Klausner to reflect on his career so far, and what’s next for a filmmaker who has never taken the easy way.
My path to directing “Wanderland” was a bit like the rambling journey its main character Alex takes over the course of the movie. For me, it was about stepping off the path I was on as a studio screenwriter to reengage again as an independent filmmaker.
You’d never know it from “Shrek Forever After” or “Date Night,” but I always believed I’d primarily work in the world of independent film.

It’s a good day to be a squirrel. First comes the trailer for The Nut Job, and now the news that the squirrel-centric children’s book “High in the Clouds” is being adapted into a feature film. Of course, squirrels can’t actually watch movies, read news on the internet, or even understand the concept of language, but I’m sure they’d be pleased were it explained to them in squirrel terms. But “High in the Clouds” is no ordinary children’s book. It’s one written by Sir Paul McCartney; formed Beatle and current writer of books about squirrels. The story will feature a squirrel on a journey to find Animalia, a legendary animal sanctuary. But the story’s not really what’s important – what’s important is McCartney’s involvement, and that he’ll be writing several songs for the film. That’s all but guaranteed to be the big selling point for...

Walden Media is developing a new Harry Houdini film project, and they've hired Chuck co-creator Chris Fedak to write it. The production company has been trying to make this film since 2006. The initial script was written by Brett Merryman and was then worked on by Josh Klausner over the years. They're obviously still trying to get it right, and maybe Fedak is the one that will take it to the next level.
Mark Waters is set to direct the film which "centers on an unsuspecting high schooler who finds himself in grave danger when he discovers a family secret leading back to the legendary illusionist. Using clues left through the centuries, he must race to uncover the greatest magical secret known to man."

Did you ever think Harry Houdini would become such a hot item? (In the 21st century, I mean.) In the past year, we’ve already had word of two projects to center on the famed illusionist: The Secret Life of Houdini, an Indiana Jones-like actioner that Gary Ross was up for back in May, and the more traditional (but still fiction-lined) Houdini, which Francis Lawrence has been considering for a bit of time.
We’re now reminded of a third (count it, a third) to take liberty with Houdini’s life for the sake of a fun story. The untitled feature, from Walden Media, was initially scripted by Brett Merryman, was later give a look by Josh Klausner (Shrek Forever After, Date Night), and, according to THR, will now be taken over by Chris Fedak, co-creator of and staff writer on Chuck. Mark Waters (Mr. Popper’s Penguins, The Spiderwick Chronicles) will direct.

Thomas the Tank Engine, who first appeared in The Railway Series books back in 1946, is going to be appearing in a live-action film for the first time, under Shane Acker, director of the Tim Burton-produced 2009 film, 9, Deadline report.
Thomas and his friends have been on our television screens since way back in 1984, and are still running today, and they’ve been the top-selling toys for pre-school children on both sides of the Atlantic for a decade.
Naturally, giving the director’s job to Acker will come as quite a bit of a surprise to some, given that his first feature film was set in a post-apocalyptic world. Acker himself, however, has said that he plans to open up the film’s audience to appeal to an older age as well, and has said how becoming a father has opened up his eyes to new possibilities in his filmmaking career:

The Thomas the Tank Engine movie is moving along the track with 9 director Shane Acker signing on to helm. Unlike the PBS TV show, Thomas the Tank Engine will be a live-action film driven by Weta Workshop, the special effect company behind Lord of the Rings and the effects in Avatar. The film has lots of credibility behind it. The script comes from Alvin and the Chipmunks writers Chris Viscardi and Will McRobb and Shrek the Third writer Josh Klausner. Charlotte's Web's Julia Pistor will produce. Currently, the film doesn't have a studio home other than the folks who make the TV show, Hit Entertainment.

Shane Acker made his feature directorial debut in 2009 with 9, which was the culmination of years of work that began with the short film of the same title, released in 2005. The former Weta animator (he worked on The Return of the King) didn't get the best reception with 9, but it certainly has fans, thanks in part to some excellent character designs. Now he's back with a very different sort of movie. We don't have a title for the film yet, but it takes place in Sodor, which readers with young children will be able to identify as the home of Thomas the Tank Engine. Deadline [1] says that Weta and Mattel are working on the film, with a script by Chris Viscardi & Will McRobb and Josh Klausner. Shane Acker seems like a weird choice; 9 was a much darker film than anything set in Sotor will have to be. The director says he...

Shane Acker, who helmed the 2009 animated feature "9", is set to direct a live action theatrical film adaptation of "Thomas the Tank Engine" for Hit Entertainment reports Deadline.
The story revolves around a pre-teen boy who has drifted apart from his father. The son is introduced into Sodor, the island of talking trains where Thomas is among a litany of characters It's a place his father visited as a child but can't remember. From that comes a "bonding experience" says Acker.
The movie aims to launch a line of older-skewing movies and toys that will try and refocus the 65 year old brand out of the pre-school market and into slightly older territory.
Chris Viscardi, Will McRobb and Josh Klausner penned the script while Weta Workshop and Mattel's entertainment properties design team have joined the creative team.

All aboard! Hit Entertainment has hired Shane Acker to direct a live-action film based on the cartoon and toys of Thomas the Tank Engine. The film’s setting will be based in Sodor, an island of talking trains. Thomas will be the main character for the film. Acker’s last film was with the 2009’s animation film “9,” which starred Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly and Crispen Glover. It was also his directorial debut. The film cost $33 million and only grossed over $31 million domestically in 2009. Thomas the Tank Engine was based on The Railway Series books written by Reverend W. Awdry and his son, Christopher. It eventually evolved into a television series in 1984. The toy line is one of the best selling preschool toys in the United States and United Kingdom. “I’m a recent father, with a 20-month old daughter,” said Acker to Deadline. “We lead such busy lives in Hollywood,...

Josh Klausner, writer of Shrek the Third, has written the latest draft of the screenplay. Now Apax Partners, the private equity company which hopes to sell Thomas the Tank Engine by spring 2011, wants to get hundreds of millions for the kiddie property. But from whom? Potential buyers include Disney or a big independent TV producer/distributor like Fremantle, which intends to enter children’s television. Neither Viacom/Nickelodeon, which owns Spongebob Squarepants, nor Turner/Cartoon Network are thought to be keen on buying Thomas; the famous blue engine would not be a good fit for their edgier, older-skewing programming. “As a children’s property, Thomas is running out of steam,” one insider tells me. Chicago – “Date Night” is one of the few word-of-mouth hits of 2010; a film that started off reasonably well at the box office but hung around the top ten for months after its release, turning it into an undeniable comedy success. The comedy starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey opened in second place but dropped so slowly that it almost made $100 million (a huge amount for a movie like this one and plus another $50 million internationally). The movie’s loyal fans will love the excellent Blu-ray release from 20th Century Fox.

Shrek Forever After Directed by: Mike Mitchell Written by: Josh Klausner, Darren Lemke Starring: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Walt Dohrn, Jon Hamm, John Cleese, Craig Robinson As a fitting ending to the franchise (so we are told), Shrek Forever After has an entertaining aura, yet the laughs are few and far between. Originally known for the imaginative blend of fairy tale characters who engage modern American contexts and commercialization, the Shrek series has sputtered slowly to a uninspired stop. The story has an acceptable plot to round out the four-film series: Shrek is approaching a midlife crisis where he is unable to find personal time and is now surrounded with three children and family activities. Wishing to return to a time where he was an ogre who was happily left alone and feared, Shrek is now disenchanted from family life and the fame he encounters from residents of Far Far Away.

Shrek Forever After, (reviewed here) as expected, romped home with the top box office number this weekend, with a paltry (by Shrek openings) $71.250 million, making it by far the worst opening weekend for a Shrek sequel, despite the increased earnings from 3D screens and generally higher ticket prices.

Shrek Forever After takes a leaf out of the science fiction playbook with a dose of an alternate reality. But is Shrek 4 a good way to end this strand of the franchise?
You know, Shrek (Mike Meyers) might be a big green monster who eats bugs and lives in a swamp, but he's a lot like the rest of us. He's got his wife, a family, friends who may or may not be wacky/annoying, and all the problems of a regular person, just ogre-ized.
Shrek's midlife crisis is no different. Really, it's the same sort of midlife issues that all men seem to face (at least on movies and television shows). He's got his beautiful house, he's got his beautiful wife, he's got the kids, yet, he's not happy, because he's traded in freedom for responsibility. All he wants is to be an ogre again, not some...

By Susan Granger - While the fabled concept of Frank Capra's "It's A Wonderful Life" has been re-interpreted in many different venues, who thought it would make its way into the fantasy realm of Shrek? Obviously, screenwriters Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke and director Mike Mitchell did, because the plot finds thoroughly domesticated Shrek in the midst of a midlife crisis, grumpy and frustrated about the mundane monotony that his life has become minding three screaming ogre youngsters.

HollywoodNews.com: The summer fare keeps coming with nary an original idea in sight. This week’s offerings boast a distinct “Saturday Night Live” vibe, featuring a showdown between prominent alums and current cast members.
Shrek Forever After
“Shrek the Third” disappointed animation fans so expectations are on hold for what is promised as the “final” installment, released in the now de rigueur three dimensions. The stars, including Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas, are back as the big green guy gets into trouble after entering into an ill-advised contract with the nefarious Rumplestiltskin. Director Mike Mitchell (“Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo,” “Sky High”) takes the helm. Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke wrote the script.
The reviews are split fairly evenly between critics who believe there is still a bit of magic in Far, Far Away Land and those who are ready to stick a fork in it.

Chicago – The laziest big budget film of the year, “Shrek Forever After” is the worst kind of family entertainment in that it relies solely on the goodwill engendered by the hit movies that came before to not only get audience members in seats this weekend but to sell them toys, video games, and tickets to amusement parks.

Once upon a time in Hollywoodland, DreamWorks Animation unveiled the animated film called .Shrek. which became an instant classic. Soon after, .Shrek 2. followed then .Shrek the Third,. and now, .Shrek Forever After..
Billed as the final chapter of the .Shrek. franchise, the fourth installment is better than the third, and will make you fall in love with the characters again. In the first .Shrek. we fell in love with Donkey (Eddie Murphy); in the second, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) stole our hearts; we forgot about Donkey and Puss in Boots in the third, but you will be smitten by the characters in the fourth.
The theme of .Shrek Forever After. is all about falling in love again. Shrek (Mike Myers) must experience true love and bestow true love.s first kiss for the second time to the love of his life, Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

All the warning signs are there: the fact that it's the fourth film, the fact that it's in 3D, the fact that virtually all of the original creative talent (aside from the actors) have moved on. So - has the law of diminishing returns caught up with Shrek Forever After? Yes and no - but mostly no. In fact, Shrek Forever After, if not as witty as the first two films in the series, is still funnier and more exciting - and more emotionally connected - than most of the summer's blockbusters so far, including both Iron Man 2 and Robin Hood. It's also engagingly entertaining - which is more than you could say about the Broadway musical version. Written by Josh Klausner (Date Night) and Darren Lemke, Shrek Forever After doesn't need 3D to pull you into its story (not that any...

Steve Carell and Tina Fey might just be the current King and Queen of American sitcoms – Carell stars in the popular American version of The Office, and Fey is the writer/creator/star of critically adored TV satire 30 Rock, so a film that pairs the two would be bound to be highly anticipated even considering the two’s rather patchy big screen careers so far (both got off to strong starts with writing and starring credits on The 40 Year Old Virgin and Mean Girls respectively, but have generally turned in less impressive work since). So it’s hardly a surprise that the two’s team up is a bit of a disappointment – what is more surprising is how a fairly lacklustre script by Shrek the Third writer Josh Klausner drew not only the two stars in but also a selection of other high profile actors in supporting roles, including Mark Wahlberg,...

Steve Carrell plus Tina Fey should equal a surefire comedy triumph. Yet Shawn Levy's comedy of mistaken identity has failed to seduce all the critics
The first movie to unite comedy heavyweights Tina Fey and Steve Carell ought to be something of a delight. And with a supporting cast that includes Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mark Ruffalo and Ray Liotta, Date Night has even more going for it on paper. Nevertheless, critical reaction is mixed, with some reviewers praising the naturalistic performances of the two leads and director Shawn Levy's skill in maintaining a realistic tone in the face of some over-the-top set pieces, while others suggest failure on both counts.
Date Night boasts a premise ripe with comedic potential. Bored New Jerseyites Phil and Claire Foster decide to head into the Big Apple in a bid to pep up their marriage, which long ago fell into a...

Shrek Forever After premiered Wednesday night at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Does DreamWorks Animation have another critical hit on their hands like How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, or is this just another lackluster pop-culture-joke-filled Shrek sequel, one final money grab? We take a look at the early reviews, after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter: "You know that a film franchise is beginning to tire when its central character is in the throes of a midlife crisis." ... "Josh Klausner and Darren Lemke's screenplay creates some fun with the personality and visual changes the familiar characters have undergone, but as with so many sequels to sequels, "Shrek Forever After" has lost much of the simple charm, humor and heart that marked its predecessors. No doubt looking to exploit the sensory stimulation offered by 3D, the filmmakers have ramped up the action" ... "The 3D...

The fourth and final adventure for Shrek is DreamWorks’ big summer hope, but has Shrek apathy begun to kick in?
What Is It
The fourth and last of the Shrek movie franchise - before the mantle is passed over to the standalone Puss In Boots feature, of course - Shrek Forever After finds the green ogre in dire straits. This time, for reasons, no doubt, soon to be explained, Shrek does a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, which leads to him taking a trip through a bit of the script to Back To The Future Part II. For Shrek ends up in a parallel version of Far Far Away, where the world is very different, ogres are the enemy and where he's never met the love of his life, Fiona. Hopefully, that's not an excuse to rerun the Shrek meets Fiona love story, though.
In theory, Shrek Forever After should take the franchise to slightly darker places,...

Steve Carell and Tiny Fey perform in the roles of Phil Foster and Claire Foster respectively, a tax lawyer and a real estate agent who describe themselves as a "boring New Jersey couple." Trouble is that Tina Fey.s character in Shawn Levy.s "Date Night" is hampered by Josh Klausner.s by-the-numbers script making Ms. Fey herself only slightly less vapid than Sarah Palin. There is some merit in the film: a critic could grudgingly concede that it would make the grade as a date movie, but otherwise even if you.re a regular fan of Saturday Night Live, you may find that the caricatures of cops, criminals and especially an African -American cab driver are alarmingly obvious. "Date Night" has some laughs and one of the better car chases of any modern romantic comedy, but even at an economical 88 minutes and despite its moving along briskly offers limited entertainment value.
