The Drew Carey Show made a lot of fat jokes. You might say they were the long-running sitcom's bread and butter, if that didn't sound like the setup for one of them. Over nine seasons on ABC, Carey subjected himself — and, occasionally, costar Kathy Kinney, who played office adversary Mimi Bobeck — to weight-related cracks. The fictionalized Drew, a blue-collar guy working a sometimes humiliating Hr job at a Cleveland department store, caught plenty of mean nicknames, like Chief Rubbing Thighs and the more simple, direct Pig. His appetite was a running gag; long before a fantasy sequence depicted the comedian dancing with the food in his fridge, it was clear that he was willing to play his love affair with all things salty and rich for laughs.

After a low opening turnout in theaters for LGBTQ rom-com “Bros,” writer and star Billy Eichner wrote on Twitter Sunday that it was “disappointing” that “straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up.” Dot-Marie Jones, who co-stars in the film, echoed Eichner’s sentiments Sunday evening at the Best in Drag Show, an annual parody drag pageant that functions as a charity benefit for people living with HIV/AIDS, and at which Jones was serving on the panel of judges.
“There’s so much heart and so many wonderful good laughs in this [movie],” Jones told Variety at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. “I don’t know if it’s because it’s, you know, LGBTQ. It’s not contagious — fuckin’ go see a movie, you know what I mean? It’s crazy.”

HBO's "The Leftovers" just concluded an incredible second season. (Here's my review of the finale.) As a bookend to the long and candid conversation we had two months ago, I spoke with the series' co-creator Damon Lindelof about many of the big decisions going into the finale, about all the hard work and tough choices required for a season this good, and his thoughts about the show's precarious future, coming up just as soon as a temple closes on Christmas... Let's start with a meta question: why are we doing this interview? A year ago, you didn't want to do any post-mortems. You wanted to let the show speak for itself. You did a bunch at the start of this season, you talked to Mo Ryan last week, and are doing a few like this for the finale. Why did you decide to be a little bit more out there this year?...

Jaime Pressly and Mimi Kennedy have both had good "Mom" news since I talked with them on the set of the CBS comedy in March. At the time, Pressly was still a "Mom" guest star, but the "My Name Is Earl" Emmy winner seemed very open to getting to be a regular part of the action. In March, it was announced that Pressly will, indeed, be a regular next season, continuing to chart the journey of wealthy divorcee Jill, who has made several trips to rehab this year. And at the time, Kennedy was unsure what was happening with Marjorie's cancer, an important Season 1 plotline that was ignored for the first chunk of Season 2. In recent episodes, it was finally been revealed that Marjorie has been continuing with treatment and that she's now cancer-free. I held my interviews with Pressly and Kennedy a little long and so there were large...

Translators introduction: This article by Mireille Latil Le Dantec, the first of two parts, was originally published in issue 40 of Cinématographe, September 1978. The previous issue of the magazine had included a dossier on "La qualité française" and a book of a never-shot script by Jean Grémillon (Le Printemps de la Liberté or The Spring of Freedom) had recently been published. The time was ripe for a re-evaluation of Grémillon's films and a resuscitation of his undervalued career. As this re-evaluation appears to still be happening nearly 40 years later—Grémillon's films have only recently seen DVD releases and a 35mm retrospective begins this week at Museum of the Moving Image in Queens—this article and its follow-up gives us an important view of a French perspective on Grémillon's work by a very perceptive critic doing the initial heavy-lifting in bringing the proper attention to the filmmaker's work.

There’s no doubting that the new season of American Horror Story is the most frightening and perverse yet. While a number of creator Ryan Murphy’s actors — Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters — have returned, the fourth iteration of the series has also featured a number of new faces. Among them are newcomer Finn Wittrock as the devilish man-child, Dandy Motts, Michael Chiklis as the freak show’s resident strong man, and Wes Bentley as the two-faced Edward Mordrake. While all three have made their own impact on Freak Show, none of them have been more severe than Twisty the Clown played by John Carroll Lynch.
“It’s great to play a character that is so starkly drawn, and it’s really fun to be a bad guy,” Lynch tells La Times. “In this case I really like that Ryan and the writers...

Mariah Carey’s first album in five years, “Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse,” came out last week and debuted with rather unspectacular sales. In numbers released today, “Elusive” sold 58,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s Carey’s lowest opening weeks sales ever for a non-holiday album since the 1991 birth of SoundScan. So what went wrong here? *The title. Not only is it unwieldy, it’s three titles in one. It’s memorable for being awkward and egotistical and just strange… and that’s even knowing the too precious backstory of the title coming from a drawing she did when she was little. And who has referred to her as “the elusive chanteuse?” That seems self-appointed. Including your name in that album title only works once— on your self-titled debut—and she’d already gotten away with it doing it again on “The Emancipation of Mimi.

Selena is doing exactly what she should be doing after her break up with Justin — hanging out with her closest girlfriends!
While Justin Bieber may come and go out of Selena Gomez’s life, her friends are her constants. Selena, 20, was spotted with Francia Raisa, star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and another unidentified friend as they engaged in some retail therapy in Beverly Hills on Jan. 24.
Selena, 20, wore a pair of sunglasses, and looked cheery as she conversed with the girls. Could they be talking about her very public split with Justin?
Later that night, Selena and Francia dined together at Mr. Chow, where Selena wore the same boots from earlier in the day.
Selena looked cool in a grey beanie hat, oversized wayfarer shades, a skeleton jumper, black jeans and lace up boots.

I gotta give it to Nicole Richie. The 31-year-old socialite turned fashion designer made a bold beauty move at the Golden Globes. She paired a sparking blue Naeem Khan dress with ... sparking blue eyeshadow.
While many women shy away from the classic shade in fear of looking like Mimi from "The Drew Carey Show," Richie looks brilliant in blue. So what makes it work?
By keeping the shimmering blue shadow on her eyelids (and not brushing up into the brow bone), it makes this look fresh and modern. Richie's top lashes coated in layers of mascara, deep purple eyeliner along the lower waterline and pale pink lipstick add the perfect finishing touches. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have a sun-kissed glow that accentuates those honey-blonde waves.
What do you think about Nicole Richie's blue eyeshadow? Is it too much of the hue? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.

The tragedy is that John Lennon graced the earth for but forty years. But a perfect storm of brilliance, social consciousness, personal pain and populist embers whipped around Lennon, leading the confused lad from Northern England to fit more life into those years than perhaps anyone else in the 20th century. For that, on what would have been his 71st birthday, we celebrate.

We all love talking about who gets hosed when the Emmy nominations come out every year. In fact, we wouldn't have been doing our job if we didn't discuss the 2011 Emmy snubs almost as soon as the nominations were announced.
But we wanted to go a little further than just discussing this year's list of the dissed. We wanted to see what would happen if we put together an Emmy ballot of snubbed shows and stars -- meaning no nominations in their designated category -- from the last 10 or 15 years, to see what names we could find on that list. It turns out that the list of the snubbed is as accomplished, if not moreso, than the people who get nominated every year.
So here is a nomination ballot containing nothing but Emmy snubs. Let us know who would be on your ballot....

Atrocious title aside, this improvised comedy gameshow is a worthier successor to Whose Line Is It Anyway‘s crown than BBC2′s recent Fast & Loose, primarily because it’s the same basic show with only minor differences. A svelte Drew Carey (host of Whose Line‘s Us remake) ostensibly takes charge, supported by a bunch of all-star improvisers: Whose Lineveterans Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Chip Esten, Jeff Davis and Brad Sherwood, teamed with Jonathan Magnum and Sean Masterson from Drew Carey’s Green Screen (a short-lived post-Whose Line improv show), and joined by Kathy Kinney and MADtv’s Heather Anne Campbell.
The series was shot at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, giving Improv-a-Ganza the unshakeable feel of Whose Line Is It Anyway: Live In Vegas. It’s pretty much the same format, just with a more impressive stage and trivial tweaking. The biggest change is the lack...

Filmed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, "Drew Carey's Improv-a-Ganza" features a solid troupe of actors and comics led by Drew Carey in a raucous and never the same instant improv stage show, direct by the audience. Earlier in the show's taping, a week after the big "Two and Half Men" meltdown, actor Charlie Sheen's impromptu appearance on Gsn's new series shocked even Drew Carey, who was not expecting him. The genius improv skills of Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Jonathan Mangum, Kathy Kinney and Jeff Davis combine with Carey's knack for making the most ordinary thing in life a hilarious venture, as Gsn.s original new upcoming series "Drew Carey.s Improv-a-Ganza" will absolutely become a family favorite.

If you've missed Whose Line Is It Anyway?, you probably already know about Drew Carey's Improv-a-Ganza. Another run at an improv show, many of your favorites from Whose Line? return to take a shot at cracking you up. Taped live at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the show premieres Monday, April 11th at 8pm on Gsn.
You are definitely going to want to clear your schedule for this one. Carey brings back some of the funniest people you'll ever want to see, including: the always brilliant Ryan Stiles (sorry, he's my favorite), the never shy about his hair Colin Mochrie, and the recently of much younger television Greg Proops.
A fan of Whose Line? since the original, British version, I'm quite excited to see not only the familiar faces, but any incarnation of improv, and this one is going to be good. In case you needed...

On Cmt's "Working Class," single mom Carli (played by Melissa Peterman) has moved her family to an upscale suburb. And Steve Kazee plays Nick, Carli's musician brother. Funny, handsome, and immature, Nick can be a comfort for Carli some of the time, but he can also be just as much of a handful as her kids.
The Kentucky native has played Sir Lancelot in the Broadway production of "Spamalot." And before landing the regular role on "Working Class," Kazee, 35, has appeared on "CSI," "NCIS," "Medium," and "As the World Turns."
In Friday's (Feb. 18) episode, Carli tries to teach her kids not to be judgmental when "The Drew Carey Show's" Kathy Kinney guest stars as the kids' lunch lady. But Carli's plan may backfire when the lunch lady wants to put Nick on the night's menu.

We are now four episodes into the season, and with that, The Big Bang Theory departs from the previously established “Shamy” arc to address two other seemingly-abandoned plotlines.
I’ve mentioned previously about the surprising rise in popularity of minor character, Bernadette. Originally intended for a five-episode stint, Bernadette (played by Melissa Rauch) was introduced as a girlfriend for the socially inept and morally questionable Howard. Bernadette’s role primarily consisted of restraining Howard’s deviant behavior, as well as supplying the cast with a second female character, especially one Penny could relate with.
For no overt reason, Bernadette struck a chord with fans. Message boards and fansites began to fill with adulation of either the character, or Rauch’s performance of the character. Unusual, yes, but not unprecedented. Urkel was never intended as a main character on Family Matters, Mimi was never supposed to exist beyond the pilot episode of The Drew Carey Show,...

In advance of the world premiere of his new slasher flick "Savage County" on MTV2 tonight, October 7, at 11 p.m. (10 p.m. Central), director David Harris has been guest-blogging on MTV News to share some thoughts on making the film. He talked about marketing the movie on Tuesday, offered up some horror-movie-making tips yesterday, and today he introduces the up-and-coming cast (like Ana Ayora, pictured to the right).
It's pretty rare for a horror movie to get an Academy Award, and even rarer for that award to go to the cast. (Quick Quiz: Which actors have won Academy Awards for horror movies? Answers at the bottom.)

Tourist Trap? The Tourist trailer is out. Other than it looks like a beautifully shot variation on Knight & Day, all I could think of is that Johnny Depp should quit smoking and take up Botox instead. Slightly Misguided Josh Brolin compared his Jonah Hex costar Megan Fox to Katharine Hepburn in the latest issue of Playboy, saying that he “"would love to be the person who puts Megan in a film in which she can actually do something interesting." Hmm, what could that possibly be... Awards Show Favoritism? Stfu! Venice Film Festival jury prez Quentin Tarantino’s being accused of handing out major awards to his pals (ya don’t say?). What’s really more alarming than this accusation is the fact that the director is starting to resemble Mimi from The Drew Carey Show...
