This week we have the second installment of the weekly Production Update as I bring you all the latest films and casting announcements out of the trade papers as well as a couple of websites around the Net. I am previewing 22 film titles this week and a few of them are already in the database and linked where that is the case. One story, however, I am held from posting until today comes from Variety in which Anne Thompson does a little Twilight franchise rumor passing as she gives the following update on the potential directors for the third film in the franchise, Eclipse: Don't believe everything you hear about Twilight and its sequels. Things are heating up already on the third installment, Eclipse. They haven't even started the second one yet, New Moon. When you've got a robust franchise, filmmakers are eager to get on board. Word is,...

Disney has acquired a pitch for a supernatural comedy to be written by Ron Burch and David Kidd. The film doesn't have a star attached or even a title, but it is a template for a big-scale comedy. Offspring Entertainment partners Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are producing. The writers, last credited with Yours, Mine and Ours , most recently did production work for Disney on Beverly Hills Chihuahua . They hatched the story for the pitch with Matt Lopez, who will be executive producer.

With Bedtime Stories belying an average opening weekend and going on to hit the $100 million mark any… day… now, Disney is clearly in a supernatural comedy frame of mind. For the studio has just snapped up the rights to an untitled supernatural comedy pitch from writers Ron Burch and David Kidd, whch they hope to turn into a tentpole picture, perhaps with a major star attached. The movie doesn’t have a title right now, but we’re assured that it does have a premise, but Disney is keeping schtum on the matter for now. Yet they thought enough of it to give Burch and Kidd a deal worth $500,000 against one million dollars, whatever the hell that means. And, frankly, the writing team that brought us Yours, Mine And Ours deserve it. Burch and Kidd developed the pitch with Matt Lopez, currently Disney’s go-to guy for supernatural comedies. He wrote Bedtime Stories,...

Last year, John Sayles wonderfully took on the world of blues, guitars, and rock 'n' roll with Honeydripper. Now it looks like that was a warm-up for something even better. In a discussion with Collider, Charles S. Dutton revealed that he's working on an HBO miniseries about Louis Armstrong with Quincy Jones, and Sayles is writing the script. Dutton might play the older Louis, and might direct the first few hours of the 6-hour-long miniseries. "Quincy and I were trying to do it 15 years ago. The mistake we were making was that we were trying to do it as a 2 hour film. And Louie's life is just so huge you just can't..." Move over John Adams. I'm betting this wonder team can kick the founding father's butt.

New York -- Spyglass Entertainment is putting comedy scribes Ron Burch and David Kidd "On a Short Leash."
The pair will adapt David Plotz and Hanna Rosin's June 2 Slate magazine article and video log of the same name into an untitled feature comedy.
As an experiment in relationship harmony, the married writers attempted to emulate a real-life pair of Buddhist teachers who vowed to never be more than 15 feet from each other. While the teachers managed to maintain their arrangement for 10 years, the authors (tied together with a string) tried to avoid coming unstrung during their 24-hour trial.
Spyglass' Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman optioned the property and will produce. Michael Larocca is supervising for the company, which had one of its biggest hits this summer with Universal's "Wanted."

Walt Disney Pictures has hired Ron Burch and David Kidd to write The Last Lap. The studio bought the feature treatment and underlying feature rights to Mike Leonard's manuscript in January. Offspring Entertainment's Jennifer Gibgot and Rachel Pfeffer are producing. The comedy is based on the real-life story of Leonard, a Chicago-based feature correspondent for NBC's Today who dropped everything and rented an RV to travel across America for a month, taking his funny and eccentric parents to see the places and people who shaped their lives. Following them in another RV were Leonard's three grown children, including a daughter who gave birth at journey's end. The story was a featured segment on Today, and Leonard's book will be published next year by Ballantine.
