If a single WW2 Hollywood war epic can sum up the complexity of homefront morale-building, this one is it. Claudette Colbert, Paulette Goddard and Veronica Lake enlist as Army nurses and are plunged into the disastrous opening onslaught in the Philippines. Adroit screenwriting and direction use the clichés of Hollywood glamour to give mom & dad back home a dramatic idea of what it might be like for a company of nurses in a failing war zone. Great studio effects show the rough retreats and casualties, while George Reeves and Sonny Tufts serve as reassuring sentimental diversions. And a squad of ‘unglamorous’ actresses get to play strong, patriotic roles. It’s an entertaining winner.

When did murder thrillers become horror pix? This one is horror only by association, and star Basil Rathbone would be a suave leading man if he wasn’t slaying wives left and right. He sets his sights on the rich, conveniently suicidal Ellen Drew, yes (sigh) that Ellen Drew. This atypical Paramount thriller has glamour to spare and also some unexpected sideways sexuality with the sinister Martin Kosleck, who almost steals the movie. But not our hearts — in that department it’s Ellen Forever and Ever.

In 1998, Dianne Middlebrook published Suits Me: The Double Life of Billy Tipton, and the narrative around Billy Tipton’s life was warped. The truth was that Tipton, a successful jazz musician who lived from 1914 to 1989, was a transgender man who lived most of his life pretending to be a cisgender man. When he died, medical examinations revealed that Tipton had been assigned female at birth, which was news to Tipton’s ex-partner Kitty Kelly and their three adopted children. A media circus ensued that presented Tipton as a woman who posed as a man to get ahead in a sexist music industry. Middlebrook’s biography perpetuated that false narrative.
Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt’s new documentary, No Ordinary Man, is a sorely needed corrective on the life and identity of Billy Tipton. This is not your average music biopic—in fact, it’s not really about jazz at all,...

All hail Olivia de Havilland, America’s longest living movie star. The more de Havilland pictures we see, the more we admire her taste and judgment in roles… or is that better expressed as, the more we admire her ability to guide a near-perfect career, going so far as to defy the studios in court. This 1941 drama has director Mitchell Leisen in fine form, a smart script by Brackett & Wilder, and a central topic that’s currently quite hot: illegal immigration.

'Hold Back the Dawn': Olivia de Havilland behind Charles Boyer and Paulette Goddard 'Hold Back the Dawn' 1941 movie: Olivia de Havilland steals show as small-town teacher in love Olivia de Havilland shines in Mitchell Leisen's melodrama Hold Back the Dawn, a sort of opening bracket for the director's World War II-era films. Adapted by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett from Ketti Frings' semi-autobiographical story, Hold Back the Dawn stars Charles Boyer as George Iscovescu, a Romanian dancer unable to enter the U.S. from Mexico due to immigration quotas imposed at the onset of the European conflict. Paulette Goddard is his scheming former partner, Anita, who marries an American to gain entry into the country only to immediately leave the duped husband. George adopts the idea – a naïve small-town schoolteacher visiting a Mexican border town is his prey. As the unsuspecting teacher, Olivia de Havilland radiates understanding and sympathy.

TV viewers in the U.K. will once again get the chance to see actors Michelle Asante and Zawe Ashton in their respective supporting roles on the second series broadcasts of ITV's Monroe and BBC's Case Histories for the upcoming television season. Asante reprises her role on medical drama Monroe as medical assistant Kitty Kelly, alongside lead actor James Nesbitt. Adapted from Kate Atkinson’s novels, Case Histories is a Ruby Film and Television production for BBC One through BBC Scotland. Ashton's humorous turn as secretary...

Oprah Winfrey once dumped a boyfriend by changing the locks of her condo unit. Haitian filmmaker Reginald Chevalier claims that the media mogul wasn't as warm and embracing as she appears on screen.
Chevalier reached out to Gawker's Kitty Kelly, the author of "Oprah: A Biography," to reveal that he had been Oprah's lover in the '80s, before she dated longtime boyfriend Stedman Graham.
According to the scorned lover, he met Oprah, who was 32 at that time, when he appeared on her show in 1985. She was doing a segment on look-alikes, and he was there because he looked like Billy Dee Williams. She later told her producers to keep him backstage after the show or else she would fire them.
They went to lunch and began their relationship the very same day. Chevalier, who's seven years younger than the media mogul, said the age difference didn't matter.

Previously - there were no previouslies, but Neal and Peter found a ruby thief and saved a kid. Not bad.
Neal and Mozzie discuss building the antennae from the fractal found in the music box. Who knew this thing would get so complex? Mozzie's relishing the challenge to build it using 1940's technology, including vacuum tubes which were used in TV's, radios, and early computers. Neal: "I'm sure you will figure it out. Good work, Moz." Mozzie: "I don't like that expression…Well, work implies I have a job." I love Mozzie, but it must be for Neal to keep track of his quirks. Makes me feel sorry for Neal.
At the apartment, Neal yells for June. Is this typical or is Neal particularly excited? By the way, what happened to June's granddaughter from the pilot? You'd think she'd show up as the female eye candy. Instead, we welcome Billy Dee Williams as Ford.

The Big O announced that on Monday’s show she will reveal a hidden family secret about herself and her family that she has recently found out and that only a few people know so far. She calls it her “miracle of all miracles” and that she “was given some news that literally shook her to my core”. Now considering that there isn’t one single sordid detail that she hasn’t revealed about herself over the past 20 years, people are scratching their heads about what this shocking revelation could be.
In Kitty Kelly’s 2010 biography about The Big O Kelly alleges that Vernon Winfrey isn’t Oprah’s biological father and that she claims that she discovered who is the real father but was keeping it secret until Winfrey learns the truth herself so it’s possible that Monday’s show might be centered on that.
One thing though,...

Oprah Winfrey made her first public remarks about Kitty Kelly’s controversial new book about her, deriding it as a “so-called biography.”
Winfrey spoke Monday at The New York Women in Communications Matrix Awards, where she presented an award to pal Gayle King.
Winfrey skipped the red carpet but wasted no time when she took the stage bashing Kelly’s book, which includes reports the daytime diva abused drugs and questions the extent of Winfrey’s longtime claim of being sexually abused as a child.
Winfrey described King as a friend who “sometimes cares about my life more than I do,” and told the audience last week “was a rough one” for King when a “so-called biography came out.”

Britain's Duchess of York refused to wear a tiara for a TV interview. The duchess - who appeared on talk show host Oprah Winfrey's Us show in 1996 following her spilt from Prince Andrew - was reportedly close to pulling out of the primetime slot after being told she would have to appear in sparkly headgear. The revelations come in a new biography on Oprah, in a book of the same name, by author Kitty Kelly, who claims the 50-year-old royal was having none of it. Sarah's publicist was reportedly told: "Oprah thinks it would be quite royal." For a number of weeks both sides allegedly refused to back down even though Oprah's producers said: "No tiara, no interview." In...

Understand that I was never told that after surgery I might lose the ability to eat, drink and speak. Eating and drinking were not mentioned, and it was said that after surgery I might actually be able to go back to work on television.
Success in such surgery is not unheard of. It didn't happen that way. The second surgery was also intended to restore my speaking ability. It seemed to hold together for awhile, but then, in surgeon-speak, also "fell apart."
