During the 1970's and 80's he became known as a director of bawdy comedies in the 'Carry On' style.
He went to Bedford school where he became captain of a rowing team.
After leaving school, he had various jobs, including growing and selling orchids, selling encyclopedias, and writing for an advertising agency, before entering the film industry in the early 50s.
Worked on films as script editor for the producer Ian Dalrymple at Pinewood Studios, after which he went on to direct several 10-minute Look at Life "featurettes" in Eastmancolor for the Rank Organisation.
