I am of that age that still thinks the 80s was 30 years ago and that the 90s just happened. Strange as that logic is, there’s nothing like movie anniversaries to pull me back into reality. Last episode we looked at In the Mouth of Madness and its impact now going strong 30 years later. That flick though, like most of John Carpenter’s catalogue, was something that was already out when I started my movie journey. I had already seen it on VHS and on TV from time to time which puts it in another category altogether. Move ahead just 5 short years to 1999, one of the greatest years in cinema history, and we start getting that 25 years of existence that puts that nice existential crisis right into my gut. Today we are going to look at one of those movies that probably isn’t considered a traditional horror movie but is absolutely horrific in nature.

Paul Dano is sharing his support for the WGA strike even while abroad.
The actor, writer, and director revealed during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival press conference that he is ready to join wife and fellow filmmaker Zoe Kazan “on the picket line” after serving on the Cannes jury.
“My wife is currently picketing with my six-month-old, strapped to her chest,” Dano said. “I will be there on the picket line when I get home.”
The Writers Guild of America strike began May 2 after six weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing the likes of Netflix, Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Amazon, and more. Writers are demanding better pay, residuals structures, and protection against AI as a replacement tool for their work, among other concerns. Multiple productions have halted in solidarity with the demonstrations.

Good news for those who wish to know what their Twitter feed’s jacking off to: the Criterion Channel are launching an erotic thriller series that includes De Palma’s Dressed to Kill and Body Double, the Wachowskis’ Bound, and so many other movies to stir up that ceaseless, fruitless “why do movies have sex scenes?” discourse. (Better or worse than middle-age film critics implying they have a hard-on? I’m so indignant at being forced to choose.) Similarly lurid, if not a bit more frightening, is a David Lynch retro that includes the Criterion editions of Lost Highway and Inland Empire (about which I spoke to Lynch last year), a series of shorts, and a one-month-only engagement for Dune, a film that should be there in perpetuity.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan has asserted he’s trying to prevent the potential destruction of the Writers Guild of America over its bitter dispute with Hollywood agents.
Kazan, who is running for the WGA West board, issued the statement in an email Friday to members. He’s part of the dissident Writers Forward Together slate, which is running on a platform that the WGA needs to resume negotiations with the major agencies after staying away from talks since early June.
“I have friends who aren’t speaking to me because I’m running and advocating a change in tactics,” Kazan said. “They think I’m being disloyal, harming the Guild. All I can say is: Loyalty does not mean blind obedience. Sometimes it means trying to stop a trainwreck.”
Kazan’s missive came a day after ballots went out to about 10,000 WGA West members. Results will be announced on Sept.

Nicholas Kazan, opposition candidate for the WGA West’s board of directors, is calling the guild’s ongoing campaign against Hollywood’s talent agents a “train wreck” that can be salvaged only by new leadership.
“We’re nowhere, we’re drowning,” he said in an email blast to the guild’s members today about the guild’s 4 1/2-month deadlock with the Association of Talent Agents. And as the standoff with agents continues, he said, the guild’s pension and health plans are in such trouble that “retirees could lose health coverage” and “pension payments to current retirees could be reduced.”
Unable to come to terms with the Ata for a new franchise agreement, the WGA in April ordered all of its members to fire their agents who refuse to sign its new Code of Conduct, which bans packaging fees after one year and bans agency affiliations with related production entities.

William Schmidt has dropped out of the race for the WGA West presidency and support Phyllis Nagy against incumbent WGA West president David Goodman in the upcoming election.
Schmidt, whose credits include “Yellowstone,” “Outsiders” and “Charmed,” has campaigned for the past two months in opposition to Goodman’s directive for members to fire their agents if they had not signed the WGA Code of Conduct. At least 7,000 agents have been fired.
Schmidt made the announcement Wednesday night at the guild’s candidates meeting at the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills. He admitted that he and Nagy did not receive a positive response, adding, “It was pretty ugly.”
Schmidt, a 37-year member of the guild, and Nagy are running against Goodman in an election that’s widely seen as a referendum on the WGA’s hard-nose tactics versus a more accommodating approach. Ballots go out Aug. 29 and results will be announced Sept.

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan has warned that the leaders of the Writers Guild of America may tear apart the union.
Kazan, who is running for the WGA West board, issued the prediction in an email Monday to members following the Aug. 16 that the announcement that the WGA would start holding tribunals to punish writers who are not following the guild directive to fire agents if the agents have not agreed to follow the WGA’s Code of Conduct — which bans packaging fees and affiliate productions.
“This disaster was both inevitable and avoidable,” Kazan said. “Inevitable once the Guild embarked on its present course…and avoidable if the same legitimate issues had been dealt with in a different, less confrontational and more reasoned, manner. If trials are held and hundreds of writers are punished…or they abandon the Guild to avoid a nasty trial…the WGA will be defanged, its power diminished,...

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nicholas Kazan has attacked leaders of the Writers Guild of America for “vitriol” in their hardline stance on Hollywood agents.
“This Guild is in crisis,” he said in an email sent Monday to members. “It’s not the crisis you think…it’s not whether or how to negotiate with the Ata or the individual talent agencies. The crisis is internal. The agency campaign has divided membership in a dangerous and unprecedented way, turning writer against writer, friend against friend…in an atmosphere dominated by distrust and vitriol.”
Kazan, who is the father of actress and writer Zoe Kazan and the son of Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan, is part of the WGA Forward Together slate. His group is contending that the WGA needs to get back to the bargaining table after two months of staying away from bargaining. WGA West president David Goodman declared on June 20 that the...

The final list of candidates in the WGA West’s upcoming election has been unveiled, giving members a clear choice between supporters and opponents of the guild’s current course in its 102-day standoff with Hollywood’s talent agencies. New board candidates include high-profile names like Power‘s Courtney Kemp, the Arrowverse’s Marc Guggenheim, The Affair‘s Sarah Treem and Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs. Ballots won’t be counted until September 16.
As previously reported, incumbent president David A. Goodman, one of the leaders of the guild’s attempts to realign the agency business, will face two challengers opposed to the guild’s hardline strategy: Phyllis Nagy and William Schmidt.

The WGA West has unveiled the slate of candidates for officer posts and board seats in the election that reflects the divisions among members over the guild’s handling of the campaign to reform its rules governing talent agents.
Scribes Phyllis Nagy (“Carol”) and William Schmidt (“Yellowstone”) are set to challenge David Goodman for the president’s post. Nagy and Schmidt have been vocal in her opposition to the guild’s reform campaign that led to more than 7,000 WGA members firing their agents in April.
The guild has been in a standoff with the largest talent agencies since then, although two boutique operations have signed on to the WGA’s new terms. Goodman, elected in 2017, has been a key face of the agency effort along with WGA West executive director David Young.
The higher volume of candidates for board seats this time around surely is a byproduct of the agency discord.

This article about Zoe Kazan first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
Zoe Kazan is not the only actor who also wrote a movie this year, but she’s probably the only one who wrote one film that’s in the awards race and then starred in a completely different film that’s also a contender.
And she’s definitely the only person who starred in one movie, wrote another and also had her first baby in the midst of her busy year.
But that is Zoe Kazan’s 2018. She co-wrote the quietly devastating family drama “Wildlife” with the film’s director and her partner, Paul Dano; the Richard Ford adaptation premiered at Sundance, went to Cannes and then opened in October. She played one of the lead roles in the Coen brothers’ darkly comic anthology Western “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”, which premiered...

Beto O’Rourke appears to have failed in his long-shot bid to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas, a state that no Democrat has carried for president in 42 years.
The Associated Press and other news outlets project Cruz will win re-election, in a victory that crushes Democratic hopes to retake the Senate with the help of the charismatic three-term congressman from El Paso.
Social media helped the progressive rise to national prominence. In the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in June 2016, O’Rourke live-streamed a sit-in by House Democrats to protest Republicans’ refusal to bring gun control legislation to the floor for a vote. He attracted millions of viewers with a Facebook Live live-stream of a road trip from San Antonio to Washington, D.C, where he and Republican Congressman Will Hurd sang along to Johnny Cash and dropped by Whataburger for a bite.

Julian Lennon is teaching children how to “Imagine” a better world — and build it themselves.
Like his rock-icon father John Lennon, the 54-year-old musician, photographer, film producer and activist is using his art as a rallying cry.

It’s hard to believe Zoe Kazan, who gained notoriety for the 2012 fantastical love story Ruby Sparks and earned an Emmy nomination for HBO’s Olive Kitteridge, is already experiencing something of a creative drought in her career.
As Kazan explains, it’s the sad reality that actresses over 30 face in Hollywood. “I had so many more auditions at 23 than I do at 33,” she tells Et by phone. “We, in our culture, tell stories about young girls and tell stories about mothers. There’s a desert in the middle.”
Even more limiting for the actress, who still passes for 16 in the Off-Broadway play Love, Love, Love, is the fact that she’s admittedly played the same ingénue part onscreen in the string of romantic comedies that followed Ruby Sparks. It’s thanks to “me looking demure and having big eyes and being kind of small and looking young,” she says.

Kenneth Kokin’s brilliant directorial debut ‘Blood Moon’ is an engaging and gripping tragedy that’s worthy of being seen. Written by Oscar Nominated Nicholas Kazan, ‘Blood Moon’ stars his daughter, Maya Kazan (‘The Knick’), Frank Medrano (‘The Shawshank Redemption’) and James Callis (‘Battle Star Galactica’, ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’).
Kokin also produced and directed second unit on several award-winning films that include the ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘Captain Abu Raed’,’The Way of the Gun’ and ‘Mortdecai’.
Haunting, yet stylistically beautiful, the story follows a young woman who is raped and how she executes retribution on her attacker. It explores the transition from of a perky, pretty teen-ager to someone who is forever warped from abuse and degradation. ‘
‘Blood Moon’ is a culturally relevant story and a reminder that the issue of rape is too often ignored, especially in a country where abortion sharply divides its people and where women have to pay for their own rape kits to gather legal evidence – the equivalent of having to pay the police to dust for prints in a robbery.
Kokin first learned of ‘Blood Moon’ in Larry Moss’s Master acting class. It was written and produced in the 1980’s as an off-Broadway play and starred a teenage Dana DeLaney.
Kokin reflects on the story and working with Kazan:
Moss’s comments on the piece were so provocative, that I was compelled to run out and read it the next day. Even now, the ending continues to haunt me. I knew if I could get this play made into a film, it would be impactful for viewers…
It was an honor to work with Kazan, because I have so much respect for him as a filmmaker. His support was a blessing, and his material gave me tremendous confidence, because I knew it could hold itself up.
I felt like we were on the same creative plane. We went through the screenplay word-by-word, and always agreed on the nuances that we found interesting and humorous.
Writer of ‘Blood Moon’ Nicholas Kazan shares the history of ‘Blood Moon’ and its adaptation to film:
I couldn’t make a living writing for the theatre, so I moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles. I started to write for film, and eventually was fortunate enough to get some films made. Over the past 15 years, I’ve mostly been writing my own scripts and selling them when I can. That’s how I enjoy my life.
The play on which this film is based was done in New York in 1983. First I wrote plays in Berkeley, for the Magic Theater; subsequently most of my plays have been done in New York and Los Angeles. This play has been produced in New York, Washington DC, California, and many other places. It will have have a run again in New York in the spring.
One of the difficult things about a play is that you can’t edit it. In film, you can edit it and pick the best given take of any moment. You put all the best takes together and, you hope, end up with something fairly reasonable.
Why did you write ‘Blood Moon’?
I was told this story in college about a girl who was raped, which is essentially the first act of the play. I didn’t even know if it was a true story, but it stuck in my imagination. And then the second act of the play, the woman’s revenge, was my dramatic conceit.
How has the audience responded over the years?
Some people receive it as a piece of theater - especially when it’s well done – and the response has been very good. Occasionally, there have been a few people who are horrified by the second act. In the theatre, what the protagonist Mayna does is justified. It has its roots in Greek myth. There’s an ‘eye for an eye’ quality to it.
Was it challenging to change ‘Blood Moon’ into a screenplay?
There are some things that work better in theater than they do on film. In the film, we had to intercut between the two acts, which you obviously don’t do on stage.
There’s a tradition of tragedy on stage, where you watch in horror as you realize what’s going to happen. That’s the definition of tragedy – you’re horrified, and then you watch it happen. That’s the first act of the play, then in the second act, you don’t know what’s going to happen, but you know she’s going to do something. You don’t know what it is until the very end.
In the film, we had to intercut between the two acts because the first act, the tragedy gradually unfolding, just didn’t work as well on film. In the theatre, you’re having a communal experience where you’re witnessing this awful thing. On film, you’re not a witness. By intercutting, we brought an element of tension to the whole that made it work.
What has been the overall response to ‘Blood Moon’?
Sometimes there were nights when people didn’t understand what was happening until the play clearly revealed it. There were other nights when people got a sense of it earlier. You would know it because someone in the audience would go ‘oh my God!’ with a gasp. It was really similar to the way that laughter is contagious in an audience. One person would gasp, and then you’d feel other people wondering what they were gasping about. And then they’d go ‘Oh My God’ and get what was happening on stage. The play worked either way: it’s a communal experience, so it didn’t really matter when the audience “saw” what was really going on.

• It looks like Mike Epps may finally get the chance to play legendary stand-up comedian Richard Pryor after all. The comic has emerged as the front-runner to play the part in a biopic for The Weinstein Company directed by Lee Daniels (The Butler). Epps was previously signed on to play Pryor back in 2005 and met with the late comedian while he was still alive to prepare for the role, but that project fell through. Epps reportedly beat out actors Michael B. Jordan, Nick Cannon, and Marlon Wayans after Wayans had also been previously attached to another Pryor film, this one...

Daniel Craig was set to star in a courtroom drama called The Whole Truth, but unexpectedly had to drop out four days before shooting began. Deadline is now reporting that Keanu Reeves has come in to take his place. This will be quite a different role for Reeves than the kinds of films we're used to seeing him in. Lately he's been doing a lot of genre films dealing mostly with martial arts, which is something he obviously has had a passion for since The Matrix.
The actor will play a defense attorney who "fights to get his teenage client acquitted of murdering his wealthy father." He will join the previously cast Renee Zellweger, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle), and Gabriel Basso (Super 8, Kings of Summer).

Frozen River writer-director Courtney Hunt’s sophomore feature, a courtroom drama titled The Whole Truth, was dealt an unexpected blow when star Daniel Craig abruptly dropped out just days before production was set to kick off. The film’s producers were left scrambling to find a replacement – but that was back in April. When no replacement was named, many of us assumed that the project had been shelved, perhaps indefinitely. Now, however, Deadline is reporting that The Matrix star Keanu Reeves has taken over the role Craig was previously set to play.

Hollywood’s obsession with John Grisham-style courtroom thrillers appears to have petered out over the past few years. The last legal drama I truly enjoyed was 2011′s The Lincoln Lawyer, and I can’t even name one cinematic entry in the subgenre that has emerged since then. So, it’s about time someone put their mind to resuscitating the courtroom thriller. The Whole Truth, which will likely release next year, may be the first project I’ve seen that could have a real shot at breathing new life into the subenre, especially now that it’s gained Oscar winner Renee Zellweger in a leading role.
The plot of The Whole Truth is being kept under wraps for now, but Daniel Craig is expected to star as a district attorney. No details have been revealed about Zellweger’s role as of yet.

Having meted out justice for his country in the last three James Bond outings, Daniel Craig is now set to do the same in an entirely different setting in the courtroom drama, The Whole Truth.
Word surfaced earlier this month via the Daily Mail that Craig was in negotiations to lead the project, with Variety announcing that he’s now attached to star in the upcoming film.
Interestingly, the original report specifically describes the film as a courtroom drama, whilst the more recent describes it as a thriller. Of course, a film like Runaway Jury shows that the thriller element can be introduced very successfully into the courtroom drama, and given Craig’s undeniable talents in the thriller genre, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we get a little of both.

Though Daniel Craig is all set to return for Bond 25, we might be seeing the English actor on screen beforehand in a different kind of role. Variety is reporting today that Craig has signed on for Courtney Hunt’s upcoming film The Whole Truth. The script, penned by Nicholas Kazan, is set to be a courtroom thriller/drama and will have the actor playing a lawyer. That, and the fact that it will be shot in Boston, are all we really know about the project at this time.
Bond 25 currently has a release date set for November 6th, 2015. With that in mind, I would imagine that The Whole Truth will go first as being an indie film, it’s clearly not as big of a production and no doubt has a shorter shooting schedule. Unfortunately, no release date has been set yet but with Craig now on board,...

With the future for “The Girl Who Played With Fire” still uncertain—“Seven” screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker was reported to have taken a crack at the script last summer—and only “Bond 24” to look forward to, Daniel Craig doesn’t have a lot on his plate, but Variety reports that’s about to change. According to the trade magazine, Craig has attached himself to the Nicholas Kazan-scripted thriller “The Whole Truth.” As it stands now, not much is known about the film nor when production is planned, especially since Craig is set to jump back into a tuxedo later this year for the “Skyfall” follow-up which is set for release in 2015. But Baz Bamigboye notes it will be directed by "Frozen River" helmer Courtney Hunt. Last fall we found out “Gattaca” director Andrew Niccol was teaming up with Ethan Hawke again for an untitled drone thriller that sees...
