V Pappas has decided on their next move. The former Chief Operating Officer at TikTok has joined the board at Simon & Schuster as the publisher looks to take advantage of the burgeoning #BookTok community.
Pappas is one of six members of Simon & Schuster’s board of directors. The publisher has revamped its top-level structure since its acquisition by private equity firm Kkr. The $1.62 billion deal closed in October 2023. Three Kkr representatives will sit on the Simon & Schuster board, alongside Pappas, ex-Penguin Random House U.S. CEO Madeline McIntosh, and Disney vet Kareem Daniel.
“This board is going to help us be the pre-eminent publisher,” said Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp. “We have aspirations to grow. We have aspirations to be the first choice for authors. And I think this board really gives us a window into how people throughout the media landscape are thinking about how books fit into the world.

Simon & Schuster, which Paramount Global recently sold to investment giant Kkr, has set a new board that include former top Disney exec Kareem Daniel and former TikTok COO V Pappas “as “it embarks on its journey as an independent standalone publisher,” said CEO Jonathan Karp.
Veteran publishing executive and investor Richard Sarnoff, chairman of media within Kkr’s Americas private equity business, will serve as board chairman. Other directors include Kkr executives Ted Oberwager and Chresten Knaff, and Madeline McIntosh, the former CEO of Penguin Random House U.S.
Daniel was exited from Disney after 18 years at the media giant along with his mentor at the company, former CEO Bob Chapek. Paramount has completed the $1.62 billion sale of book publisher Simon & Schuster to investment firm Kkr, nearly a year after a richer sale to Penguin Random House ran aground over regulatory issues.
The all-cash transaction, announced last August, makes Simon & Schuster a stand-alone private company and the only independent major trade publisher. Last year, a judge in an antitrust case ruled against the pending $2.2 billion acquisition by a direct competitor, citing monopoly concerns and negative potential impact on customers and other publishers. The deal was then officially jettisoned last November, with Bertelsmann’s Penguin Random House paying Paramount a $200 million breakup fee.
Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp will continue to lead the company, which was founded in 1924.
Paramount, like its large media rivals, is contending with a challenging operating environment in linear TV and motion pictures as it also battles to reach profitability in the ultra-competitive streaming market. Having rebranded...

After its $2 billion-plus agreement to sell Simon & Schuster fell apart last October, Paramount Global has found a new buyer for the book publishing giant at a slightly discounted all-cash price point of $1.62 billion.
Private equity firm Kkr has entered into an agreement to acquire the assets of Simon & Schuster, the companies said August 7. In opting to sell to a buyer not affiliated with the “Big Five” group of publishers — which includes prior suitor Penguin Random House along with HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group and Macmillan — Paramount appears to think this is the deal that can finally clear regulatory approval.
“We see a compelling opportunity to help Simon & Schuster become an even stronger partner to literary talent by investing in the expansion of the company’s capabilities and distribution networks,” stated Richard Sarnoff, chairman of media at Kkr.

Paramount Global’s attempt to sell publisher Simon & Schuster to the owner of Penguin Random House has been blocked, a Washington D.C. judge ordered on Monday. The companies replied that they’re evaluating options and are looking to request an appeal.
“Upon review of the extensive record and careful consideration of the parties’ arguments, the Court finds that the United States has shown that ‘the effect of [the proposed merger] may be substantially to lessen competition’ in the market for the U.S. publishing rights to anticipated top-selling books,” U.S. Circuit Court Judge Florence Y. In response to the order, a Penguin Random House rep called the move a “setback” and pledged to appeal. “We strongly disagree with today’s decision, which is an unfortunate setback for readers and authors, and we will immediately request an expedited appeal,...

David McCullough, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian whose biographies gave character and compelling narratives to figures and moments that make up the fabric of the American experience, has died. He was 89.
His publisher, Simon & Schuster, said that McCullough died on Sunday at his home in Hingman, Ma, surrounded by his five children.
Two of McCullough’s most famous works, presidential biographies of Harry Truman in 1992 and John Adams in 2001, not only won Pulitzer Prizes but were turned into TV miniseries. His gift for storytelling translated into that of a narrator of documentaries like Ken Burns’ Civil War.
McCullough received the National Book Award for The Path Between the Seas, about the building of the Panama Canal, and Mornings on Horseback, a biography of Theodore Roosevelt. Other best sellers included The Johnstown Flood, The Great Bridge, Brave Companions, 1776, The Greater Journey, The Wright Brothers, and The American Spirit. He also...

Simon & Schuster said that Mary Trump’s new book set a sales record for the publisher, selling a total of 950,000 copies through Tuesday, its first day of release.
The publisher said that the sales figure includes pre-orders and first day sales of print books, ebooks and e-audiobooks. The company also ordered a 14th printing of the book that will bring the number of copies to more than 1,150,000.
In Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, Trump mixes anecdotes and analysis to tell what it was like to grow up in the family and to warn against another term in office for her uncle, President Donald Trump.

Jerry Seinfeld’s first book of comedy in more than 25 years – a decade-by-decade, career-spanning collection of his favorite material – will be released Oct. 6, publisher Simon & Schuster announced today.
“Whenever I came up with a funny bit,” Seinfeld said in a statement, “whether it happened on a stage, in a conversation, or working it out on my preferred canvas, the big yellow legal pad, I kept it in one of those old school accordion folders. So, I have every piece of stand-up comedy I thought was worth saving from 45 years of hacking away at this for all I was worth.”
Jonathan Karp, President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster, said the book will allow readers “to see Jerry and his comedy evolve through the years.” He said the publishing house expects the book “to be both a highlight of 2020 and a lasting work for anyone who appreciates the thrilling but unforgiving art of stand-up comedy writing.

“It was the most warped author interview on television,” says Jonathan Karp, the publisher of Simon & Schuster’s flagship imprint. “The more stupid the question was, the more intelligent the conversation became.”The Colbert Report ends its run today, but yesterday was its last “ordinary” show, and its last guest was, of all people, a fiction writer (Phil Klay, an Iraq veteran whose story collection, Redeployment, won this year’s National Book Award). In addition to everything else the show has accomplished since launching in 2005, it might have been TV’s most effective servant of books. For nine years, Colbert enlisted roughly two writers a week into a bizarre form of theater, the Dick Cavett shadow-play today’s America deserves. New York — For much of the nine years that Shane Salerno worked on his J.D. Salinger documentary and book, the project was a mystery worthy of the author himself.
Code names. Hidden identities. Surveillance cameras. Until 2010, when "The Catcher In the Rye" novelist died at age 91, only a handful of people were fully aware of what he was up to. Even now, with the release date of the film "Salinger" less than three weeks away, little is known about a production that draws upon more than 100 interviews and a trove of documents and rare photographs, and that promises many revelations about an author who still fascinates millions.
"I have worked more than 200 documentaries in my career and Salinger was the most secretive and the most intense film I have ever worked on," said Buddy Squires, the film's cinematographer and co-producer who has worked on such Ken Burns documentaries as "Jazz" and "The Central Park Five.

Opening on Valentine’s Day here in the UK, Judd Apatow’s This Is 40 is the sort-of sequel to the blockbuster comedy success, Knocked Up. The original film featured a stellar and impressively diverse soundtrack, including the likes of Bright Eyes, The All-American Rejects, The Clash, and Britney Spears.
And with Apatow at the helm once more, it’s no surprise that the sort-of sequel brings with it another brilliant selection of music for the Ost.
Apatow has reteamed with music supervisor/editor Jonathan Karp for This Is 40, who worked on the original film (and many other of his projects), and the sixteen-song soundtrack is expectedly fantastic. A selection of classic, remastered tracks that sit alongside nicely with younger artists.

New York — A new J.D. Salinger film and biography are being billed as an unprecedented look into the mysterious life of the author of "The Catcher In the Rye."
Simon & Schuster announced Tuesday that it had acquired "The Private War of J.D. Salinger," an oral biography compiled by author David Shields and filmmaker-screenwriter Shane Salerno, whose screenplay credits include the Oliver Stone film "Savages." Salinger's own books have been published by Little, Brown and Co.
Salerno has been working for several years on his documentary, which PBS will air next January for the 200th of its "American Masters" series. According to Simon & Schuster, the book and film draw upon interviews "with over 150 sources who either worked directly with author J.D. Salinger, had a personal relationship with him, or were influenced by his work."
Salinger's longtime literary agent, Phyllis Westberg of Harold Ober Associates Inc., declined to comment Tuesday.

Simon & Schuster has acquired the rights to The Private War of J.D. Salinger, the anticipated biography of The Catcher in the Rye author J.D. Salinger by David Shields and Shane Salerno. Publisher Jonathan Karp announced the book will be published in September. Salerno also directed a documentary film that was acquired Monday by the PBS series American Masters. The series will air Salinger in January 2014 as its 200th episode. It is unusual for PBS to acquire an outside documentary to air on American Masters, as most projects are commissioned in house. "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" has been playing on Broadway for quite a while now, without too many recent controversies to speak of, no less. But that doesn't mean the drama behind the scenes has been forgotten entirely — far from it, in fact.
The New York Times reports that Glen Berger, playwright and co-writer of the book for "Turn off the Dark," has sold a new book to publisher Simon & Schuster all about his experiences working on the "Spider-Man" musical.
"Song of the Spider: The Inside Story of the Most Controversial Musical in Broadway History" will detail Berger's time working on "Turn off the Dark," including his experience working with director Julie Taymor on the musical. Berger was one of the original writers on "Turn off the Dark" and was also involved in rewriting the show; he was named as a defendant in Taymor's lawsuit against the producers of the "Spider-Man" musical.

Every pundit that has tried to make a point, throw a punch, or declare victory should pause today to salute Christopher Hitchens.
He burst on the U.S. media scene first on William F. Buckley Jr.'s television series Firing Line, then on CNN's Larry King Live and Crossfire in the early Reagan Presidency. He (along with now presidential candidate Newt Gingrich) knew immediately that cable television was the new media play for serious public policy combat. The "disruptors," as our web friends say now. Hitchens didn't talk to the empty chairs each night on C-span as Gingrich did to make his points and show the American people that he was still at work, he just swung for the rafters with every comment on the only two cable shows.
Pat Buchanan, a great verbal brawler in his own right, is the only person I ever saw who could anticipate the blows.

Bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-politician plans to call the book Total Recall
There were so many options for Arnold Schwarzenegger when the former bodybuilder and governor of California was deciding on a title for his just-announced new memoir, from Judgement Day to True Lies via Last Action Hero, but the actor-turned-politician is currently planning to call the autobiography Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is writing a memoir about his rise to fame and unlikely transition from Austrian-born champion bodybuilder to Hollywood action star to California governor, his publisher said on Thursday.
Schwarzenegger, 64, who in May announced his separation from wife Maria Shriver after admitting to fathering a child out of wedlock, is "chronicling his embodiment of the American Dream" in his second autobiography, publisher Simon & Schuster said.
The memoir, titled "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story," was acquired by Simon & Schuster after Schwarzenegger began working on the book last year. It will be released in October, 2012.
Named after his 1990 film "Total Recall" near the pinnacle of his movie career, the book will return to Schwarzenegger's roots where he started lifting weights as a teenager in a small Austrian village before winning Mr. Universe titles and moving to the United States at the...

After winning multiple bodybuilding titles, starring in dozens of movies, helming an eight-year stint as California governor, and one very public love child scandal and divorce, Arnold Schwarzenegger is ready to write a memoir.
Simon and Schuster has acquired the rights to the book, tentatively titled "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story," which will be published in October 2010. According to the press release, Schwarzenegger began working on the book last year.
"He has been keeping notes and working on the book for over a year," his spokesman Adam Mendelsohn told People magazine. "He didn't want to write his autobiography while he was governor."
However, a spokeswoman for the Governor's office would not disclose how much of the book--if any--would be dedicated to Schwarzenegger's divorce from estranged wife Maria Shriver.
The couple of 25 years split in May 2011 amid revelations that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with former household staffer Mildred Baena.

Action star-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to lift the lid on his rise to fame, the breakdown of his marriage and his time in office in a highly-anticipated autobiography.
The former California governor's book, tentatively titled Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, will cover his marriage to Maria Shriver, which crumbled earlier this year after he was revealed to have fathered a lovechild with a maid, as well as his Hollywood career.
Schwarzenegger will also write about his upbringing in Austria, his bodybuilding and his time in office.
The star has been preparing the tome for months and will begin writing chapters during filming breaks on The Expendables 2.
His spokesperson tells People.com, "He has been keeping notes and working on the book for over a year. He didn't want to write his autobiography while he was governor."
Jonathan Karp of publisher Simon & Schuster adds, "Nobody has a life story even close to his. Truly, Arnold is one of the most fascinating figures of our time."...

Hollywoodnews.com: This should be a must-read. Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly will tell his side of “The Story” when he publishes his memoir in 2012.
Titled “Total Recall” (so awesome), Schwarzenegger’s book will cover his bodybuilding days, his acting career, and his governorship, according to THR. Simon & Schuster will release the book, and is looking at October 2012 as a release date. How many copies do you think will be sitting under Christmas trees next holiday season?
“Truly, Arnold is one of the most fascinating figures of our time, and one of the greatest success stories in the world,” said Jonathan Karp, the publisher of Simon & Schuster, in a statement. “Nobody has a life story even close to his.”
But the trade could not confirm how much Schwarzenegger will reveal about his separation from Maria Shriver and the illegitimate child he fathered with the family’s help.
My advice?...

Former McCain adviser Mark Salter, alleged to be the author of the anonymous novel about Obama, told The Daily Beast months ago about his failures at writing fiction.
So, another Washington mystery has been solved. Time's Mark Halperin has put two and two together and declared Mark Salter, John McCain's once trusted adviser and political alter ego, the author of O, the gimmicky anonymous novel about the Obama White House. Not that Halperin had to put much shoe leather into reporting this one out. Page Six all but declared Salter the winner last week. (Of course, Primary Colors, the Clinton-era novel which O apes, had many authors before Joel Klein aroused himself from anonymity.)

Simon & Schuster today is about to market the heck out of O, its anonymously written and self-proclaimed provocative novel about Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. That's right -- the campaign that hasn't happened yet. Supposedly, it's penned by someone "who's been in the room with Obama". This is kinda different from Primary Colors, the thinly disguised roman a clef about Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and also written anonymously until journalist Joe Klein came forward to claim responsibility. That novel sold a ton of copies for rival publishing house Random House, and S&S is obviously trying to capitalize on that success. Will Hollywood bite? "We haven’t discussed it with anyone yet, but it’s early, and no one’s read a thing about it until today," S&S publisher Jonathan Karp just told Deadline. Primary Colors was deemed a stiff at the box office when Universal made it...

Earlier today we mentioned some good news from the online publishing front (well, okay, Facebook) in terms of new operations and subsequent hirings. Now it's old media's turn. A Publishers Weekly bulletin just announced a new imprint for the venerable house of Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. After serving extremely capably at Fsg for the past three decades, most recently as the publisher and editorial director at Fsg Books for Young Readers, Margaret Ferguson will be heading an eponymous imprint beginning next year.
According to Pw, Ferguson's imprint will "publish approximately 15 titles per year, across all age ranges and formats." This is excellent to hear for Ferguson naturally but also provides a welcome boost of confidence for an industry that is more than ever in search of just that.
Additionally that number--15--suggests perhaps publishers are getting wise to the formula that's worked so well for Jonathan Karp and his own imprint at Hachette Book Group,...

What do Vladimir Nabokov, Frida Kahlo, and Ted Kennedy have in common? (You know, other than the fact that they’re all dead and each has generated his or her share of controversy.) They all have new books, just published or forthcoming, that won’t be downloadable any time soon.
E-books are a small but growing part of the publishing business. Wholesale revenues for U.S. publishers have steadily increased every quarter for the past seven years, reaching nearly $40 million at the end of June 2009, according to the International Digital Publishing Forum.
But traditional publishing is a business that’s often reactive, according to one industry insider, even with titles that are sure to stir up sales. For now, Kennedy's, Kahlo's, and Nabokov's publishers are digging in their heels and sticking to their old-school page-turning guns. Publishers Random House have named the author who will pen the next installment of Maria Puzo's Godfather saga. American author Mark Winegardner will continue the story of the Corleone family by writing The Godfather Returns, which is set to be released in autumn 2004. Random House editor Jonathan Karp says, "There are many stories left to tell. (I was looking for) someone who is in roughly the same place in life Mario Puzo was when he wrote The Godfather - at mid-career, with two acclaimed literary novels to his credit, who writes in a commanding and darkly comic omniscient voice." Winegardener's previous literary efforts include Prophet Of The Sandlots and Crooked River Burning.
