After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, and three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a scene from an entry in my favorite horror franchise, Friday the 13th. The film Lance is talking about today is Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (watch it Here), and the section he’s focusing on is the entire climactic sequence in which iconic slasher Jason Voorhees gets knocked around by the telekinetic abilities of heroine Tina. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!

Mutilator 2, writer/director Buddy Cooper’s long-awaited follow-up to his 1984 slasher The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), is ready to make its way out into the world. The movie even screened at Joe Bob Briggs’ latest drive-in Jamboree event back in October, and received an “audience favorite” award there. And yet it still hasn’t secured a distribution deal. Cooper confirmed this on Facebook, where he wrote, “We are still searching for distribution. It might help if a few fans asked their favorite streaming service or theater when they would be showing Mutilator 2. If enough people show an interest, I feel like a distributor would be willing to help get it out to everyone.“
The fact that Shudder hasn’t swooped in to release this as a Shudder Original is shocking, given that they’ve not only had The Mutilator on their streaming service, but even had...

We bounced all over the place in May, starting with Fred Dekker’s genre mash-up Night of the Creeps before getting deadly serious with Gus Van Sant’s pseudo-Columbine film Elephant, trippy with Alex Garland’s surreal Annihilation. Now we’re back in ultra campy territory with the silly and heartfelt Tammy and the T-Rex (1994).

Thirty-eight years after gifting the world a really cool slasher called The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), writer/director Buddy Cooper has finally gotten around to making a sequel to the film… and over the weekend, he took to social media to unveil the first official poster for Mutilator 2! You can take a look at the poster at the bottom of this article.
Cooper notes that “the woman bound to the nasty looking piling” on the Mutilator 2 poster is Olivia, played by Eva Hamilton of Death Kiss. Producer Jeff Seemann added that “the ocean water was in the 40s when Eva stepped into it for this scene.” So it definitely sounds like it’s a moment worth promoting on the poster.

Ted Kotcheff's 1989 comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" was considered outrageous at the time. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman play a pair of low-level insurance wonks who, in the course of their daily work, find a mysterious "mistake" on the books. It seems that someone has been committing fraud. When they take it to their boss Bernie (Terry Kiser), he invites them to his beach house as thanks for figuring it out. Bernie is, of course, the perpetrator and intends to murder them. Before he can, however, Bernie is killed by a vengeful mob boss (Bernie was sleeping with the mob boss' sister). When the McCarthy and Silverman characters arrive, they find Bernie dead, surmise that foul play is afoot, and figure they have to protect themselves from any further mob violence ... by pretending Bernie is still alive.
The bulk of the movie involves McCarthy and Silverman hoisting around a dead body,...

What if you died but could somehow manage to still entertain guests at your exclusive beach house party, mark up the price for your Porsche by 20 grand and sell it, and perform in the bedroom like you never have before ... all while evading a hitman? That's the 1989 dark comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" in a nutshell. Terry Kiser stars as the titular character, which means he plays a corpse for most of the film. And almost the entire film uses Kiser playing dead. However, his co-star Andrew McCarthy revealed that there is one scene in which a real body wasn't used. (Side note: we talked to Andrew McCarthy about his memoir and '80s nostalgia in 2022.)
In "Weekend at Bernie's," Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), two young professionals looking to climb the corporate ladder at their New York City insurance company, show their boss, Bernie Lomax, that someone within the company has committed insurance fraud.

Ridiculously absurd. Cartoonish. Offensive, maybe? Those are just a few words to describe "Weekend at Bernie's," the 1989 dark comedy about two young professionals --Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman) -- who drag their dead boss' corpse around an island to avoid being taken out by a hitman. Even some of the movie's cast members thought the idea was asinine. But it appears their attitudes changed when they started filming the movie, according to Andrew McCarthy's recollections (via The Hollywood Reporter):
"We thought it was funny s*** as we were doing it ... There's the old saying, 'If it's funny to you on set, it ain't going to be funny on screen,' but we found it really f****** funny. We loved Bernie, and we just wanted to do more s*** to him. So a lot of the s*** we just thought of on set. I love 'Bernie's.' I think it's great.

Two best friends, one drunk stranger, and a pretty messed up memorable night: It’s a total “Emergency.”
Director Carey William’s Sundance breakout premieres stars Donald Elise Watkins and Rj Cyler as college seniors looking to get down for Spring Break. But their “legendary tour” of the most elite parties takes an unexpected turn after the roommates discover a drunk, semi-conscious woman (Maddie Nichols) in their apartment. Even worse: Their roommate, played by Sebastian Chacon, has no idea when the girl appeared.
As the college students debate over calling the cops to report a drunk white woman nearly passed out at the home of two Black men with their Latino roommate, they decide to transport the girl somewhere safe themselves. Meanwhile, her sister (Sabrina Carpenter) is also trying to find them.
K.D. Dávila penned the script and also was behind director Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name.

I don’t know if you remember this or not, but after Jurassic Park came out and blew up at the box office, there was a surge of mostly bad dinosaur-themed movies that were released. One of these films was the ridiculously crazy 1994 cult classic Tammy and the T-Rex.

"Everybody walk the dinosaur." Chicago's Music Box Theatre has debuted an official trailer for the special "Gore-Cut" version of the 90s cult classic direct-to-video comedy Tammy & The T-Rex. Made only a year after Jurassic Park broke records in 1993, this film arrived in late 1994 and earned a cult following. It stars Denise Richards as the high school girlfriend of a guy who is murdered and then his brain is implanted into a robotic T-Rex that looks super fake. Oh, it's wacky. "Playing like a '90s Disney Channel movie—until the decapitations and head crushings begin. So put on your best T-Rex costume and join us for an ultra-rare, and possibly first-of-its-kind, public screening of this original, uncut, R-rated, gore-filled 35mm print of Tammy." It also stars a young Paul Walker, plus Theo Forsett, Ellen Dubin, and Terry Kiser. This new "uncut" version of the camp sci-fi comedy is part of a 4K restoration,...

Terry Kiser is best known for playing the deceased Bernie Lomax -- opposite Larry Wilson and Richard Parker -- in the lifeless 1989 film "Weekend at Bernie's" and the 1993 zombie follow-up "Weekend at Bernie's II." Guess what he looks like now!

Ever since seeing Creepshow (1982) when it first arrived on video, I’ve been enamored with anthology films; reaching back to Amicus’ ‘60s and ‘70s treasures like Tales from the Crypt (1972) all the way up to Epic Pictures’ Tales of Halloween (2015), omnibuses scratch a very particular itch for this viewer. Falling somewhere in the middle of my terrorline is From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), a proud and nasty addition to the sub-genre. This bugger does not mess around.
Released by Moviestore Entertainment stateside and by Cineplex-Odeon up here in Canada the following year, From a Whisper to a Scream (Aka The Offspring, which is what I knew it as) made back its $ 1.1 million budget plus a few dollars more, and the film received mixed reviews from critics in its limited release. I’ve waited a long time for this (cracks knuckles). This argument has been a long time coming, but I know that I’m ready (cracks neck). I’m ready to make a case for an overlooked, often derided film from the Friday the 13th series (tapes fists). That’s right, I’m here in defense of Friday the 13th Part VII – The New Blood. And you know what? I’m confident that I’m going to sway at least a few of you (does series of calisthenics so as not to pull a muscle).
Usually mocked as “Carrie vs. Jason,” many people dismiss this entry as a sloppy attempt by an FX guy trying his hand at directing. Most know that John Carl Buechler places the blame on the MPAA for cutting out all of his beloved gore, but they are often quick to point out that the movie...

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.
Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

Don Calfa, a top-notch character actor who portrayed the embalmer Ernie Kaltenbrunner in the 1985 cult horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead, has died. He was 76.
Calfa died Thursday — two days before his birthday — at his home in Yucca Valley, Calif., actor-producer Mark Terry (Live Evil, Brother's Blood) told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Brooklyn, Calfa also portrayed Paulie, the hitman who murders Hamptons rich guy Bernie Lomax (Terry Kiser) by giving him a heroin overdose, in the classic comedy Weekend at Bernie's (1989).

There has been a flurry of super-important, nostalgia-drenched movie anniversaries recently, including, but not limited to Tim Burton's "Batman" (25 years), "Gremlins" (30 years), "Ghostbusters" (30 years) and "The Karate Kid" (30 years). But one movie that seems to have been overlooked completely is "Weekend at Bernie's" (find out where to watch) which came out 25 years ago this week. The story of a couple of yuppies who try to pretend that their dead boss hasn't died at all, it was a surprise hit, pulling in double its production budget at the box office and spawning a goofy, guilty pleasure sequel. (It did get a Blu-ray release earlier this summer, so you can now watch all of the icky '80s tomfoolery in HD.)
Even though "Weekend at Bernie's" was far from a phenomenon (as evidenced by the deafening silence around its anniversary), you can bet one thing: it will be remade. Look no...

Horny camp counselors around the world, beware! Jason Voorhees is coming to television. According to Deadline, Friday the 13th producer Sean S. Cunningham has inked a deal to develop an hour-long show based around everybody’s favorite hockey mask-clad machete wielder.
During his ’80s heyday, Voorhees was one of the most iconic characters in film, and his hulking, silent demeanor and signature goalie wear have kept him in the horror zeitgeist since his inception. Thanks to the increasingly odd nature of the sequels and the fact that Jason has been under the control of an eclectic cavalcade of writers, directors,...

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

I've been waiting all week to see Barney's homage to the 1989 comedic classic Weekend at Bernie's.
Marshall and Ted did Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman's roles justice, absolutely nailing the costumes. Barney's performance was on another level, though. He was a dead ringer (pardon the pun) for Bernie Lomax, head tilt and all. If Terry Kiser was watching from his home in Colorado tonight, I have no doubt he would have loved "Weekend at Barney's."
The storylines were pretty straight forward by this show's standards. Lily took another step down her new career path with Marshall at her side. Robin realized that while some less-than-ideal things about Barney will never change, neither will the fact that he loves her. And Ted finally reached the point where he was ready to settle down.
Last week Lily broke down and shared her regrets with Marshall about her path in life.

Billy Wilder’s career is a lengthy one, full of highly acclaimed features. But out of all the great films that he made over the course of forty some years, Some Like It Hot may be the most famous. And when you talk about what his masterpiece was creatively, it’s often mentioned right up there with movies like Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment. But I guess that’s no surprise, it’s got Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis acting like ladies and Marilyn Monroe slinking around in cocktail dresses. That’s memorable stuff. Ted Kotcheff’s career was a lengthy but unspectacular one. He mostly did TV work and is probably best known for being the guy who directed the original Rambo film First Blood. But what I best remember him for is a movie about two guys and a dead dude called Weekend at Bernie’s. I must have watched it about a million times...

Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy had such a good idea, they did it twice -- lugging around a deceased Terry Kiser and using his clout for their own benefit. Two Denver dudes thought the amusingly morbid concept of the Weekend At Bernie's movies was clever enough to replicate in real life. While not as extensive or creative as the corpse usage in the movies, Robert Jeffrey Young and Mark Rubinson had plenty of chuckles courtesy of their dead friend Jeffrey Jarrett -- when they found...

No matter what else happens, this is bound to be the most disturbing film-related story you.ll read all weekend. The Denver Post reports that Robert Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25, have been charged with .abusing a corpse, identity theft and criminal impersonation. after they took their friend.s corpse out for a night on the town in a morbid scene ripped right out of the 1989 comedy Weekend at Bernie.s. As I.m sure you all remember, Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman starred in Bernie.s as down-and-out employees of an abusive jerk (Terry Kiser) who pretend their murdered boss is still alive for a complicated weekend. The real-life Colorado incident isn.t quite as sordid, though it.s equally grotesque. Young, according to reports, was staying with the deceased, Jeffrey Jarrett, while he tried to get back on his feet. After coming home one night, Young found Jarrett .unresponsive.

In a well meaning gesture, Evan purchases a grand 19th century plantation home for his girlfriend. At first, she is taken aback and none too happy, as neither of them have even finished college. However, Evan assures her that it will be good for them; they will be able to fix it up, flip it, and make some extra cash. Unfortunately, little do either of them know the terrible past of the house and an innocent action during a weekend visit from a few college friends resurrects a blood thirsty killer who has a fetish for a freshly sharpened ax.
Sleek with high production values and competent direction, Mask Maker has a familiar premise that certainly borrows elements from some of the genre classics, most notably Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, the...

Obviously inspired by the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre from director Tobe Hooper, Mask Maker (aka Maskerade) follows a young couple who purchases a 19th century plantation home and invites friends up for the weekend to celebrate. As they dig up the mystery surrounding the death of the former residents, it becomes apparent that the plantation home’s former owners have not left, and the unlucky youths suddenly find themselves running for their lives!
Mask Maker is due to be released on video on April 12, 2011 from Screen Media Films.
Mask Maker is rated R for bloody horror violence, sexual content, nudity and language.
