After his sweeping victory with “There Will Be Blood” in 2007, many thought Daniel Day-Lewis had reached his zenith. What could top that performance?
In 2012 he was given the title role in Steven Spielberg’s epic “Lincoln.” Once again he immersed himself in the role, spending an entire year on research of Abraham Lincoln alone. For this performance as America’s greatest statesmen, Day-Lewis became the first and only winner of three Best Actor Academy Awards, ranking behind only Katharine Hepburn for the most acting Oscar wins in a lead category (she has four).
Watch the video above as the only living actress with three acting wins, Meryl Streep, presents an emotional Day-Lewis with the trophy at the 2013 ceremony.

Read More: Any Filmmaker Can Use Kickstarter -- Even an Oscar Winner Strand Releasing has acquired Ron Judkins' "Finding Neighbors," which played at the Austin Film Festival, the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Boston Lgbt Film Festival and the USA Film Festival. Judkins previously worked as a production sound mixer on "Saving Private Ryan" and "Jurassic Park," for which he won two Academy Awards. "Finding Neighbors" stars Academy Award nominee Michael O'Keefe ("The Great Santini") as Sam Tucker, a once-successful, aging graphic novelist who is having trouble writing his next hit and mostly lazes around the house. Sam's wife (Catherine Dent of TV's "The Shield") has gone back to work, and suspects him of infidelity or a mid-life crisis. Sam befriends his neighbor, a younger gay man who is a big fan of his books. "'Finding Neighbors' is that delicate comedy/drama that has found an audience with.

Okay, I’m going to go out on a limb. I might be pathetically misguided, but I believe that this special film’s message (at least what I took away from it) is that everyone in life has issues, hidden problems that the outside world does not always comprehend or see. Communication can help people to understand, and even if folks attempt to avoid confrontations with strangers, new encounters can help in a variety of ways. Finding Neighbors demonstrates these ideas in a first-rate manner. It’s both intelligent and humane, but I’m not implying that the film is also dull as dishwater. While being entertained by this story’s slice of life, I was also re-educated about the importance of communication between people—how it can inspire and enliven everyone in a positive way. Most importantly, it does these things while being entertaining as well.

Ron Judkins is an Oscar-winning sound engineer. He has worked on over 50 films since 1976 including blockbusters for directors such as Steven Spielberg, Gus Van Sant, Paul Thomas Anderson, Richard Donner, and Barry Levinson. He won two Academy Awards for Best Sound for Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan. He made his directorial debut in 1999 with the film The Hi Line, which he also wrote. Now Ron Judkins is back in the director/writer chair for the new film Finding Neighbors, a comedic drama about three sets of Los Angeles neighbors who are searching for true connections.
Finding Neighbors is the story of a formerly acclaimed graphic novelist who goes looking for a true connection outside of his marriage – and just over his fence. Six months late on a book delivery, Sam (Michael O’Keefe) has succumbed to a full-on midlife and creative crisis. Sherrie (Julie Mond), the provocative girl-next-door, offers...

When was the last time you talked to your next door neighbor? With all of the crazy reports out there in the news today, it seems that we as human beings have become more closed off to the world. I recall having a realization that, after almost one-and-a-half years of living in my apartment, I had never introduced myself to (or even seen) the person next door. I'm sure I looked rather foolish making an introduction after so long, but it seemed so unusual to live right next door to someone and not know anything about them -- even their name. Writer/director Ron Judkins explores this exact topic in his latest film, Finding Neighbors.
Sam (Michael O'Keefe) is a graphic novel artist, famous for works he did many years ago. It appears that he's hit a lull in his career and is struggling to create anything for his latest...

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

Whenever Steven Spielberg decides to take up a new directorial endeavor, he doesn’t do it alone. He gets his stock company of talent on the phone, and once he has the gang together, they go off and make a movie. It’s certainly not the same as when Spielberg was making little films in his backyard as a kid, but in a way the spirit is still the same. One big difference, though, is that when these movies get made, Oscar often takes notice.
Spielberg films almost always receive Academy Awards attention. On his own, he has 15 nominations (one of which came for just producing Letters from Iwo Jima, which he didn’t direct), while his crew has gotten dozens of nods. The last film of his not to get at least a nom was The Terminal, and before that it was Always. Believe it or not,...

I've enjoyed watching the Academy Awards for as long as I can remember. Even though I don't always agree with their decisions, it's still a fun experience for me. This year Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to give us the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, I however didn't wake up to watch because I was just too damn tired.
There's a lot of great movies that were nominated this year and Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations which isn't surprising at all. Life of Pi ended up getting 11 noms, Les Miserables got 8, Silver Linings Playbook got 8 as well, Argo ended up with 7, Zero Dark Thirty has 5, Skyfall got 5, Django Unchained got 5 and The Avengers got 1.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took the stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning to announce this year's Academy Award nominations, and they played out almost exactly as everyone expected. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and another Best Actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ang Lee's Life of Pi was up for 11 awards, while David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables received 8 nominations apiece. There were a total of 9 Best Picture nominees this year, and if there were any surprises they would probably be Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. Django Unchained was also in the mix, although Quentin Tarantino was ignored for Best Director. On the bright side, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all recognized for their performances in The Master, although the movie itself received no love.

As promised, host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 2013 Oscar nominees at the Academy Awards' annual press conference first thing this morning. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 85th Academy Awards nominations this morning, and absolutely no one should be surprised that a movie directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and based on the life of one of the most universally admired people on the planet garnered the most nods. Lincoln garnered 12 nominations, including Best Picture, directing, acting and supporting actors (Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones) — really they owe it all to the beard, don’t they? Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained followed in the nod count. We’ll get to the surprising snubs in a minute, but first, take a look at the full nominations list and marvel along with Emma that every single one of the supporting actor nominees has won an award before:

After what feels like the longest wait in Oscar history, this year’s nominations for the 85th Academy Awards have finally been unveiled! Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and Ted, was joined by actress Emma Stone, star of Superbad and The Amazing Spider-Man, who let rip with the nominations at 5:30am at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills.
Throughout Oscar history, the nominations have always been announced by members of the Academy themselves, which makes MacFarlane’s appearance here something special. It was announced earlier last year that MacFarlane would host the 85th Academy Awards.
Arguably the biggest disappointment to have emerged from this year’s nominations is the Best Picture snubbing of Skyfall, the latest entry in the James Bond franchise, a film which was considered to have been a serious contender. If Skyfall were to have been nominated for Best Picture, it would...

Kickstarter has become one of the most popular fundraising platforms for filmmakers. Most are independent directors and producers trying to raise money to finish their dream projects, but Oscar winners are finding it useful, as well. Meet Ron Judkins. Don't recognize the name? Well, you've probably heard his work in films such as "Jurassic Park" and "Saving Private Ryan" -- Judkins won a best sound Oscar for each of those films and has provided his sound-design skills to many other Hollywood and independent features (the guy also was nommed for Spielberg's "Schindler's List" and for best sound mixing on "War of the Worlds"). His first feature as a writer-director, "The Hi-Line," debuted at Sundance in 1999 and eventually sold to Showtime. Recently, after finishing work on a little film called "Lincoln," Judkins has turned his attention to completing another of his own films, "Neighbors,"...

PARK CITY, Utah -- Ron Judkins' "The Hi-Line" is a tantalizing near-miss. Beautifully photographed and capably performed, the movie is marred by a dramatically inert story overloaded with exposition and bereft of insight and surprise.
It's a shame because Judkins, an Oscar-winning sound technician writing and directing his first film, is a naturally talented filmmaker blessed with a fine sense of landscape and classical construction. The Sundance competition effort is a tough sell for distributors, though its sharp performances from its attractive leads, Ryan Alosio and emerging young star Rachael Leigh Cook ("She's All That"), suggest that, with the proper care and attention, it has the potential of connecting with sophisticated young urban audiences.
A movie about identity and the search for origins, the story follows Chicago liquor store clerk Sam Polvino (Alosio), who travels to a dreary Montana outpost to seek out 20-year-old Vera Johnson (Cook) with information about her natural father, a drifter and small-time convict. Unsettled by the revelation and the elaborate deceit carried out by her adoptive parents (Stuart Margolin and Margot Kidder), Vera enlists Sam's help in finding her real mother.
As the two move through the eerie, snow-covered landscapes, their quest becomes secondary to the painful realization of their shuttered dreams and unfulfilled lives. Cook has a beautifully understated, natural acting style that is generously rewarded in a complex, extended sequence unfolding in the interior of Sam's car. But the interior lives of Vera and Sam seem too remote and cut off and the dialogue too overt for the material to achieve a larger emotional resonance. The confrontation between Vera and her natural mother (Tantoo Cardinal) doesn't carry the weight and importance the story assigns it.
Technically, the film is a small marvel, in particular the evocative, descriptive production design of Christine Schuman, the brooding cinematography of Wally Pfister and the fluid editing by Charlie Webber.
Judkins has a superb grasp of the grammar of cinema. Late in the film, a single pan that shifts the action from the barren Montana flatlands to Chicago's lakefront is haunting. It only points out the missed opportunities. Indeed, one leaves "The Hi-Line" wishing the words lived up to the images.
