“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.
Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. If there's one thing to take from the trailer for The Gilded Age Season 2, it's going to be more dramatic than ever.
HBO dropped the official trailer for the new episodes on Tuesday, which teases forbidden love, scandal, and everything else that made this series such a success story.
As previously reported, The Gilded Age Season 2 premieres Sunday, October 29, at 9 p.m.
But what's about to go down in 1883?

It’s all-out social warfare in the second season of HBO’s The Gilded Age, and Bertha Russell intends to be the last woman standing.
Returning Sunday, Oct. 29 (9/8c), the period drama picks up in 1883 with the news that Bertha’s bid for a box at the Academy of Music has been rejected. And as we all know, hell hath no fury like a Russell scorned. (For her staff’s sake, we hope there are no breakfast trays nearby. She’s a thrower!)

Things will heat up in HBO’s “The Gilded Age” Season 2, and not just on the railroads.
As Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) escorts Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) to some sort of social event, his voiceover reminds viewers that Bertha has almost everything she could ever want.
“Mrs. Russell, you conquered New York,” Lane’s McAllister says at the beginning of the clip released by Max Wednesday morning. “You dine in the best houses. But are you sure it’s wise to start the war with New York society? Aren’t you asking for trouble?”
“Yes, and you’ll need to pick a team,” Coon’s Russell responds. “Head-to-head and one will be the winner.”

In 1997, after attending a Royal Gala evening, Geri Halliwell kissed Prince Charles on the cheek. According to royal protocol and etiquette, you’re only allowed to shake a royal’s hand, so the scandalous moment landed on the front pages of newspapers and went down in pop culture history. Now, instead of daring Ginger Spice to kiss Charles for a second time, The Spice Girls are avoiding him altogether.

Series creator Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") could have kept "Downton Abbey" going for years. After all, soap operas are notorious for spanning generations. But I admire the restraint to put a pin in the series after six seasons of television. It felt like the perfect place to allow the characters to find their own futures. But as we know now, of course, the future of "Downton Abbey" was far from over.
Since the series finale in 2015, Highclere Castle has opened its doors to the aristocratic Crawleys and their downstairs staff once again with two theatrical feature films ("Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture" and "Downton Abbey: A New Era"), both of which are excellent extensions of the British period melodrama. I'm still kind of stunned they were able to pull it off, considering the obligation of giving the hefty ensemble their time to shine within the time constraints of a movie.

Producer and actor Sadie Frost (“Dracula”), who made her feature directorial debut with a documentary on British fashion designer Mary Quant, is now training her lens on another British cultural icon.
“Twiggy” will be a feature-length documentary on Quant’s contemporary Lesley Lawson, better-known by her nickname Twiggy. It will trace her journey from her working-class childhood in northwest London, through to her international stardom as a celebrity model, and her career as an actor, singer, fashion designer, writer and TV presenter. This will be the first time Twiggy’s story has been told in full and with her support.
Studio Soho’s international sales arm is launching the project for worldwide presales at Cannes. Nick Hamson will produce for Soho Talent, part of the Film Soho group, and Simon Jones for Frost’s new production company Reel Time. Reel Time’s executive producer is Andrew Green.

Focus Features has pushed back the release of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” two months and the sequel will now be released on May 20, the company announced Wednesday.
The sequel was previously scheduled for release on March 18. The film will be released in the U.K. by Universal on April 29.
While plot details for the film have been sparse, writer Julian Fellowes told People that Lady Mary continues to run Downton as the mother of the next Earl of Grantham.
“As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further,” Fellowes said. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s, which is merely the beginning of the modern world.”
