"The Wire" co-creator David Simon often compares the show to a modern Greek tragedy, going so far as to reimagine mythic Gods moved into intractable American institutions. Capitalism, drug dealing, policing, politics, education, and the media are all examined in great detail, giving you a full picture of why the characters are helpless, and fundamentally incapable of changing anything beyond, maybe, their personal situations.
The series is set in Baltimore, which occasionally gave it some difficulties due to the bleak urban picture it painted, but as co-creator Ed Burns said, "we could've taken that show into any city." Burns and Simon just had decades of life and experience in Baltimore from which to draw.
"The Wire" began with a narrow focus that gradually expanded to dig into Baltimore's nooks and crannies. The show's first season mostly focuses on the plights of both the Barksdale criminal organization and the Baltimore P.

Showtime will not be moving forward with a third season of “Flatbush Misdemeanors,” Variety has confirmed. The news comes after the network aired the series’ Season 2 finale on Aug. 21.
The Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman comedy series followed the two creators as they settled into their new lives, struggling to survive in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Kristin Dodson, Hassan Johnson and Kareem Green were amongst the cast.
“We would like to thank the creators, executive producers and stars Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman, along with fellow executive producer Keith Heisler, our partners at Avalon, as well as our scene-stealing supporting cast of Kristin Dodson, Hassan Johnson and Kareem Green,” said a Showtime spokesperson in a statement. “We’re very proud to have taken Kevin and Dan’s distinctive shorts and expanded it into two seasons of excellent television. One possibility is Julio, played by comedian Chris Estrada, who borrowed aspects of his own life to co-create the show with Pat Bishop, Jake Weisman, and Matt Ingebretson. Julio is in his early thirties, still living at home in South Central L.A. with his mother Esperanza (Laura Patalano) and grandmother Maria (Julia Vera). Anyone who has seen Hassan Johnson act would probably agree that he hasn’t gotten nearly as much credit as he deserves. The talented actor has been in the industry for more than 25 years and he has been a part of some great projects during that time. Although some of his roles have been on the smaller side, Hassan brings something special to every role he plays. During the 2000s, Hassan’s career really started to gain some traction thanks to his roles in shows like The Wire and ER. By the end of the decade, however, Hassan’s on-screen appearances became

Overlong and erratically paced, Brendan Kyle Cochrane’s New York City-based “Equal Standard” opens with a self-conscious scene that heavy-handedly hints at an impending tragedy. There in the sun-dappled kitchen of the happy Jones family, Detective Chris (Tobias Truvillion), Sergeant Jackie (Syleena Johnson) and their adorable daughter lovingly go about their rosy morning routine, while an over-sentimental score embellished with stark notes of caution (one of the film’s various recurring motifs of unsubtlety) accompanies the perfect picture. As the doting husband and wife exchange their daily goodbyes before taking off for their high-risk professions, there is so much weight and emphasis placed on the concerned Jackie when she says “Be safe” that you prophetically know Chris is soon going to need that advice.

"On these streets, all you have is the guy next to you." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an indie crime action-drama titled Blood Brother, the latest film from writer/director John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal and The Quiet Ones). Not to be confused with the award-winning documentary from a few years ago also titled Blood Brother, this film is about an ex-con who takes murderous revenge against childhood friends whom he believes let him take the fall for a crime they committed together. One of the friends, now a cop, risks his life to stop him. Blood Brother stars music artist Trey Songz, along with Jack Kesy, China Anne McClain, Hassan Johnson, Tanee McCall, and Fetty Wap. These kind of crime+action+friends movies are becoming a dime a dozen nowadays, and none of them really seem they're worth anyone's time. Bobbi Kristina Brown‘s tumultuous relationship with her boyfriend Nick Gordon is center stage in the first trailer for the upcoming made-for-tv biopic about the late rising star, who died at only age 22 in 2015.

It’s been nearly two years since the tragic death of Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of R&B singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. And this summer, TV One will turn the 22-year-old’s brief time in the spotlight into a made-for-tv biopic.
The network announced plans for the film, titled Bobbi Kristina, during their annual “upfront” presentation this week, telling reporters the project would offer an “intimate look at the highs and lows of parental, familial and romantic love complicated by fame through the eyes of a sensitive, vulnerable young woman.”

Craig Updegrove's designed the poster for the Anchorage International Film Festival, opening today and running through December 11.
"Peter Kosminsky has earned that rare accolade for a director of television drama: a retrospective at the BFI." In the Telegraph, Jasper Rees notes that Kosminsky is "a pretty much unique figure in contemporary television who has devoted his career to giving the powerful sleepless nights. Tony Blair's sofa cabinet all hated The Government Inspector. The NHS was excoriated in Innocents, his drama about Bristol heart surgeons. The MoD weren't big fans of his early documentary about the Falklands. Laws have been rewritten thanks to Kosminsky's zest for asking awkward questions in front of millions of viewers." Peter Kosminsky: Making Mischief opens today and runs through December 22. On a somewhat related note — it's about British television, anyway — for Film Quarterly, Mark Fisher looks back at Andrew Davies's A Very Peculiar Practice,...

Jennifer Hudson wakes up with gloomy mood in a music video for her latest single "No One Gonna Love You". The former contestant of "American Idol" is upset with her man because when she mentions about celebrating their anniversary together, he just shrugs it off.
Beside focusing on the love story, the clip also features J-Hud strutting her stuff in a chair-dance sequence. "This is the first time that I've had the chance to dance," she said. "But it was probably the part I anticipated the most and I actually had a lot of fun. I thought I accomplished it. You be the judge."
The music video is directed by Diane Martel and has Hassan Johnson as her love interest. The song, meanwhile, is lifted from Jennifer's latest studio installment "I Remember Me" which has been in stores since earlier this year.

Jennifer Hudson has a new music video coming out soon. The former contestant of "American Idol" has filmed the clip in New York City on June 1, a week before she was rushed to hospital for severe abdominal pains due to a so-called food poisoning.
"This is the first time that I've had the chance to dance," J-Hud said in a behind-the-scene video. "But it was probably the part I anticipated the most and I actually had a lot of fun. I thought I accomplished it. You be the judge." She is going to play opposite Hassan Johnson who is her ex who tries to win her back.
The music video is directed by Diane Martel and is going to make its way out this coming Friday, June 24 on Vevo. The song, meanwhile, is lifted from Jennifer's latest studio installment "I Remember Me" which has been in stores since earlier this year.

Let’s take a look at what hits shelves today and see what we can spend our kroners on:
Grab ‘Em Right Away
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Directed by: Niels Arden Oplev
Written by: Nikolaj Arcel & Rasmus Heisterberg
Starring: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace & Sven-Bertil Taube
Why you should buy this? Because it not only gives you a brilliant story but also hope that the remake to come (to be directed by David Fincher) will probably be amazing. There are few mystery thrillers that actually ‘thrill’ me as it plot unfolds in front of me. Even though the film alludes to certain mental issues in the Lisbeth character (Rapace, shown above), it never exploits said conflicts as plot contrivances, which I like a lot. In your garden-variety Hollywood film with a $100M+ budget a lot of broad character representations are to be expected. Here they’re non-existent. A lot...

The first full week of May sweeps saw every procedural show upping its game. Big ideas were debated, and big-idea villains were trotted out as potential suspects. A casual cop-show fan was treated this week to a veritable parade of Nazis, Soviets, Jihadists, and Killer Clowns. There was a Brooklyn labor dispute on CSI:ny and a polygamy subplot on Ghost Whisperer. But it wasn't all fire and brimstone. Engagement rings figured prominently (albeit fatally) in Castle and CSI: Miami. That rakish Tony Dinozzo on NCIS fell in love with a girl he'd never met. There were no guilty husbands and only one guilty wife.

This is the world we live in: any time you make a movie about morally conflicted cops battling charismatic drug dealers on violent city streets, you're going to draw comparisons to The Wire -- and almost inevitably, your movie will come up short. At times, Brooklyn's Finest is gleefully derivative, like the best of director Antoine Fuqua's work, but most of the time it just seems to be going through the melodramatic motions. It's a wonderfully stacked cast -- including three "Wire" regulars, Hassan Johnson, Michael K. Williams, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. -- but it's ultimately just nothing more than an okay cop movie. It has larger ambitions which it simply can't live up to. The first-time screenwriter, Michael C. Martin, described the compelling central kernel of the movie: "Police officers trying to do the right thing, but being told they...
