Journalism thrillers have a long history at the Oscars — All the President’s Men and Best Picture-winner Spotlight being among the most influential in the genre. Although September 5 does not reach those heights, it is a consistently entertaining picture with strong crafts and a solid ensemble.
September 5 Review
September 5 follows the ABC Sports broadcasting team as they find themselves in over their heads at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany, having to report on a hostage crisis in which a group of Israeli athletes are taken by a group of terrorists. It’s a story that many people know (and has been told in film before) but from a different perspective than we usually see.
This blend of journalism drama and political thriller results in an utterly gripping thriller. Even though the story takes place over the course of an entire day, Tim Fehlbaum does a great job of ramping...

The trailer for September 5 brings the ethical and moral dilemmas that journalists face to the forefront when an ABC Sports team on the ground in Munich for the 1972 Olympics pivot to covering the terrorist attacks that took place in the Olympic Village that year.
The most in-depth look at the film thus far begins on a regular Olympics morning as the sports newsroom begins covering the games on Sept. 5, 1972, but before they know it, they’re thrust into an entirely different story.
“There’s a hostage situation going on right now in the Olympic Village,” John Magaro’s Geoff says in the trailer, as ABC News insists on taking over the story since the sports team is in “way over your head.” But legendary TV executive Roone Arledge, portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard, shuts the news team down and states the sports team will handle it.
“What do I tell the cameras?...

"Can we show someone being shot on live television?" Paramount Pictures has finally unveiled the official US trailer for a film called September 5, which premiered to exceptional praise at both the 2024 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals this fall. It has earned some very positive reviews but is only beginning to get buzz with a release dates set for November and December in US theaters. The film focuses on the crew of the ABC Sports TV station that was located in the Olympic village, covering all the sports events live for the first time ever in television history. Through this lens, September 5 provides a fresh perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time. As much as I loathe to wade into awards season chatter, one of the most humorous things thus far this year is various pundits predicting September 5 as the frontrunner for Best Picture, a film that has not earned all that much acclaim nor buzz in its festival debuts. Now audiences will get a chance to decide for themselves as Paramount rolls out the film, directed by Tim Fehlbaum and starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, Leonie Benesch, Zinedine Soualem, Georgina Rich, Corey Johnson, Marcus Rutherford, Daniel Adeosun, Benjamin Walker, and Ferdinand Dörfler, on November 29 before expanding wider on December 13. New York City honored late media titan Sumner Redstone by renaming a segment of West 44th Street outside Paramount Global headquarters as Sumner Redstone Way.
City Council Member Erik Bottcher joined Paramount co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins as well as Redstone’s daughter, Paramount Chair Shari Redstone, for a Times Square ceremony Wednesday.
The city said it made the move as a salute to Redstone’s “distinguished leadership contributions to the media and entertainment industry over many decades, as well as his fierce dedication to civic and community affairs.”
Redstone died in 2020 at age 97. The self-made businessman, philanthropist and World War II veteran built a media empire out of a small Boston movie theater circuit, turning Viacom into a global powerhouse. In 2019, it merged with CBS Corp. and was later renamed Paramount Global, reflecting the brand clout of the movie studio Redstone acquired after a memorable battle with Barry Diller.

Tim Fehlbaum‘s September 5 — a Venice Film Festival world premiere about the terrorist attack that occurred at the 1972 Munich Olympics — is not a documentary. But the filmmaker, who made a mark in science fiction films like The Colony and Hell, treated it like one.
That meant that Fehlbaum and his team spent many months in a tireless research process to discover how the events unfolded, minute-by-minute, while also working with a set and production design team to create an authentic replica of a sports broadcasting facility like the one the ABC Sports team used in Munich on that fateful day, the filmmaker said during a September 5 press conference held in Venice on Thursday afternoon.
“When the idea came up for us to maybe tell the story [of September 5], it became a research conversation,” Fehlbaum said, adding that conversations with an eyewitness named Geoffrey Mason (played in the film by John Magaro) fueled...

Warner Bros. Discovery added 2 million direct-to-consumer (Dtc) subscribers in the first quarter of 2024. It now has a total of 99.6 million Dtc subscribers across Max, linear HBO, Discovery+, and some relatively small international streamers you’ve never heard of — don’t worry about those.
It’s just the second straight quarter of a return to Dtc-subscriber growth after three straight quarters of losses. The combination of HBO Max and Discovery+ was bound to cannibalize some subscriptions in the early going, and that is exactly what it did.
The company’s Dtc business made an $86 million profit in the recently ended January-to-March quarter. David Zaslav, the Wbd president and CEO, shorthands that segment to “streaming,” so you can too — but anyone who gets the HBO channel through their cable provider is counted there as well.

Bill Burr was in the middle of a standup set in the original room at The Comedy Cellar when his cell phone rang: It was Jerry Seinfeld. What do you do? Burr answered.
Seinfeld wanted Burr to play JFK in his Pop-Tarts (fake) origin story, “Unfrosted.” Burr immediately accepted the role — and then went back to telling jokes to the paying customers.
It was the fastest (and the most public) “yes” that Seinfeld and his writing partner Spike Feresten say they got from a tremendous ensemble comedy cast that includes Seinfeld himself, as well as Jim Gaffigan, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler, Hugh Grant, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer — there’s honestly just too many to list. Marla Mindelle, who starred in and co-created the Off-Broadway hit Titanique, is debuting her new musical The Big Gay Jamboree Off-Broadway this fall.
The show is co-written by Mindelle and is described as a parody of musical theater itself. Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap are serving as producers of the show.
In 2019, LuckyChap had announced a deal to produce the title as a movie musical for Paramount, however that has not yet materialized. Their involvement in the stage show marks LuckyChap’s first foray into theater.
The Big Gay Jamboree features a book by Mindelle and by Jonathan Parks-Ramage (author of Yes, Daddy), with music and lyrics by Mindelle and Philip Drennen and direction and choreography by Connor Gallagher (Beetlejuice on Broadway). The production describes it as a show that centers on Stacey, who wakes up hungover, “in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical.

Did the best survivalists make it to the Outlast finale? Or did the players willing to play dirty get to the end over better survivalists on the Netflix show? Some fans want their favorite players to get another chance, and Javier Colón gave some advice to fans.
Javier Colón tried to get revenge on Alpha on ‘Outlast’ Javier Colón on ‘Outlast’ | Netflix
Camp Alpha and Camp Bravo were on the same side of the river. Naturally, they became allies and shared resources and information. That changed when Jill Ashock, Amber Asay, and Justin Court told Colón and Brian Kahrs about a different plan.
Alpha wanted to “expedite” the process of other players quitting. They told Bravo they should lure other players to them and then reject them, so they had to quit. Kahrs said this went against his morals, and Colón agreed.
Alpha took Camp Delta’s sleeping bags, and they quit the following day.

Netflix’s new reality TV competition show challenges survivalists to endure the Alaskan forest for a chance at a million-dollar payday. One team played an aggressive game, forcing multiple competitors to tap out. After the show aired, Javier Colón claimed the episodes didn’t portray how his teammate Brian Kahrs got “tricked,” causing him to fire his flare gun.
Brian Kahrs quit ‘Outlast’
Outlast kicked off with 16 survivalists split into teams of four forced to survive in an Alaskan forest with basic supplies. When the “lone wolves” couldn’t take it anymore, they would tap out by firing a flare gun.
By episode 4, Team Alpha went on to the offense and began sabotaging other groups to force them to exit the competition.

Los Angeles, Aug 25 (Ians) The hard work of ‘Batgirl’ cast and crew may not completely go to waste as the movie will get its own screenings, though only a select group of insiders will get a chance to see it.
Sources told ‘Deadline’ and ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ that ‘Batgirl’ will be screened on the Warner Bros. lot this week.
It is believed that only the cast and crew who worked on the film along with representatives and studio executives were given invites to the screenings that began and will go throughout the week.
One source described the private screenings as “funeral screenings,” as it’s likely the only time a handful of people get to see the film before it is locked away in a vault, either physical or digital, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Warner Bros. shocked everyone on August 2 when it announced its decision to shelve ‘Batgirl’, starring Leslie Grace in the titular role.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Westworld Season 4 premiere.] Everyone who thought this season was going to deal with the apocalypse, raise your hand. After concluding Season 3 with some massive explosions and an implied “end of days” scenario for humanity, Westworld has again flipped its own script. Instead of showing society collapse, the Season 4 premiere introduces viewers to a mysterious new world (or multiple worlds) where Caleb (Aaron Paul) has a family, Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) is living in a cabin in the woods, William (Ed Harris) — or more likely, the host version of him — is up to no good, and Evan Rachel Wood is back as a new character, Christina. Here’s how it happens. John Johnson/HBO World #1: Caleb, Maeve and William The episode opens with William touring a data storage facility. Apparently, something was stolen from him eight years earlier by a “she” — Maeve? Hale-Dolores? At this point, it’s all part of...

"Someone in our station betray4ed us" Amazon has unveiled an official trailer for All the Old Knives, a modern espionage thriller from Danish director Janus Metz, who last made the excellent sports film Borg vs. McEnroe. This new film is arriving in April in theaters and on streaming. Right around the same time as this other Chris Pine spy thriller The Contractor, which was delayed for years. In All the Old Knives, two CIA operatives, and former lovers, reunite at idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea in the U.S. to re-examine a mission six years ago in Vienna involving a hijacked airplane where a fellow agent might have been compromised. Chris Pine co-stars in this with Thandiwe Newton, joined by Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Pryce, Corey Johnson, Ahd, Abdul Alshareef, and Nasser Memarzia. This trailer seems to give away a lot (who is the shady one?) but I'm still curious, this looks much better than The Contractor.

Batgirl has just started production in the streets of Glasgow this week, finally bringing the Dceu back to Gotham City and expanding Batman’s big-screen family of characters. Set photos have already teased other characters that might appear in the movie, but this is Barbara Gordon’s movie and we finally have our first look at Leslie Grace (In the Heights) in her Batsuit.
Fans of the “Batgirl of Burnside” era will immediately recognize Grace’s suit, which she revealed on her Instagram. Like it’s been ripped right out of a panel drawn by Babs Tarr, the suit combines a modern purple-ish blue jumpsuit with gold trim and a black cowl. It’s unclear if Barbara will also rock gold Doc Martens to complete the Burnside suit…
