Bijaya Jena’s second film is probably her most famous directorial work, screening in festivals all over the world including France, Malaysia and Egypt. In 2013, it was telecast on BBC Channel 4, BBC as part of the “100 years of Indian Cinema” celebration.
The story revolves around the family of a feudal landlord, Ray Sahab, who rules over the peasants of the area with a certain degree of benevolence and justice, with the help of his right-hand man, Munim. Ray Sahab and his wife also house two distant relatives, Chandra, a young idealist poet and Kokila, a young widow whom the family treats with utmost respect, despite the prejudice surrounding women of her status in the area. The couple also takes care of Kokila’s education while also assigning her work in the administration of both the stately home, with its plethora of servants, and the the peaseants of the area inhabiting it.

The 17th Dhaka International Film Festival’ (Diff) was held in Dhaka 10 to 18 January 2019 along with the 5th annual Conference of Women of Cinema. Words cannot begin to describe my second experience there. Next year I will attend again as the Director of the Women’s Conference as we move ahead with new ideas.
The Festival, organized by Rainbow Film Society, is dedicated to the promotion of a healthy cine culture in Bangladesh and to celebrating the global mainstream in film and its social relevance. It is also a great place to network with some fabulous up and coming Bengali talent and to meet professionals in the business from parts of the world you do not normally get to meet.

This unique experience created a sense of family among us all and allowed us to meet the Bengali people as family. I am still processing all that I discovered in Bangladesh and how it changes my perception of the world as a large place filled with worthy and wonderful people.

Iran recently hosted the first Kish Island Film Festival to promote Cinema from Asia and North Africa. I was surprised to come across some great film makers from Armenia, Georgia, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. I was on the feature film Jury with famous Iranian director Masoud Kimiyai who is a novelist and has 32 films to his credit. Others on the Jury were Elchin Musaoglu of Azarbaijan, Asif Noorani, a journalist for the newspaper Dawn in Pakistan and editor of the Eastern Film magazine. The woman director from Tajikistan, Gulandom Muhabatova could not come at the last minute.
The festival screened documentaries and short films too. Each award comprised cash prize of 3000 Us dollars. There were seminars by famous producers from UK, France and Australia.
Besides a hectic schedule of watching films, we really enjoyed the hospitality of the festival team. There were some minor problems regarding the tickets but the beautiful...
