MollywoodIt is a testament to these actors’ caliber that their changeovers are not only received so well, but actively encouraged by fans of cinema. With that cracking loud voice of his, actor Janardhanan introduces himself – all too politely to the surprise of an audience unaccustomed to seeing him like that – as Ouseppachan, the miserable father-in-law of a woman found dead in the house. He is one of the suspects in the 1988 crime film Oru Cbi Diary Kuruppu. Up until then, Janardhanan had mostly played the unabashed villain in Malayalam films of the 70s and 80s. But for reasons best known to K Madhu, the director of Mammootty’s Cbi series, Janardhanan was cast as the harmless rich guy in the film, whose misfortunes somehow translated into comic relief for the audience. After this, the senior actor played comedian in movie after movie, one of his most loved sequences featuring in Mannar Mathai Speaking,...

ControversyThose who have followed the Sreenivasan-Mohanlal filmography would have registered that the duo’s rift began around 2012, when Sreenivasan wrote a lazy and distasteful sequel to their 2005 collaboration ‘Udayananu Tharam’.Sreenivasan and Mohanlal and in Udayananu TharamA few days ago, Malayalam actor-writer-director Sreenivasan made some scathing remarks against actor Mohanlal, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of several Malayalam film enthusiasts. Every media outlet took up the issue, dissecting Sreenivasan’s statements and holding extensive discussions on what could possibly have gone wrong between them. Even his own son, actor and director Dhyan Sreenivasan, openly expressed his displeasure with his father’s comments. “He should have never said that,” Dhyan had said, questioning why Sreenivasan continued to act with Mohanlal even after “discovering that he was a hypocrite”. DeathFrom being slapstick silly and lighthearted to sarcastic, shameless and quirky, there was no type of humour he couldn't pull off.Malayalam actor and politician Innocent passed away at the age of 75 at 10.30 pm on Sunday, March 26, due to Covid-19 related respiratory issues leading to organ failure and cardiac arrest. He might have had top-billing in only a handful of films but his sense of comic timing and razor sharp wit delivered in rib-tickling Thrissurian slang made him a scene-stealer in every film he was part of. He also wore many hats, first as an entrepreneur and later as a politician who fought an electoral battle and was elected as Member of Parliament representing Chalakudy constituency. He also served as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists for many years. Innocent, also a cancer survivor, revelled in narrating funny anecdotes and wrote light-hearted books about his illness. He...

MollywoodAs one of those rare actors in Malayalam cinema who has effectively managed to make the transition from comedy to character roles, it is startling that Suraj seems to have suddenly reached stagnation in his career. There is a stillness about Roy that’s almost disquieting. A loner who had to be wooed by his current wife into marriage, Roy doesn’t really subscribe to the stereotypical notions of masculinity. In an earlier scene in the psychological thriller Roy, directed by Sunil Ibrahim, he scrubs the kitchen clean, calmly waits until midnight for his wife to come back from the office, and whips up a cup of coffee for her. He has a strange condition — he isn’t able to differentiate between his reality and dreams anymore, and some future events seem to be manifesting in his dreams. This is also strangely the pattern of roles Suraj Venjaramoodu has been...

ControversyLahari Music had drawn Rakshit Shetty’s home banner Paramvah Studios and music composer Ajaneesh Loknath to court for copyright violation in 2016.Tnm StaffRepresentativeImageOriginality is the main component in any form of creative work, which lets the creator stand apart from others. While one can be inspired by other creative works, the line is thin and the creator can be in trouble with copyright infringement rules. The most recent example is the popular song from Kantara – ‘Varaha Roopam’ – composed by Ajneesh Loknath. The ‘Varaha roopam’ song has glaring similarities with ‘Navarasam’ song from a Kerala based music band Thaikkudam Bridge. The music band has also announced that it would be filing a lawsuit against the creative team of Kantara. In the backdrop of the controversy Tnm looks at similar allegations of music copyright violations cases in India and the end result in each of these cases. Saregama Vs Eros International...
