Author of detective and mystery fiction, he created the popular
characters Sir John Appleby of Scotland Yard and Charles Honeybath, an
amateur sleuth and member of the Royal Academy of the Arts.
In addition to writing 49 mysteries under the pseudonym Michael Innes,
he was a Fellow of Christ Church, Oxford, and a professor English
literature who wrote many scholarly works and non-mystery novels under
his professional name, J.I.M. Stewart.
