At 21, he joined a touring repertory theater company and later appeared in pantomimes as well.

On 27 December 2005 in Westminster, Inman entered into a civil partnership with Ron Lynch, his partner of 33 years, under a new British law that had come into effect the week before that gave official recognition to same-sex relationships.

In December 2004, he was forced to pull out of the London pantomime production of Dick Whittington after being diagnosed with hepatitis A. His health began to decline and he never worked again.

He was named BBC TV Personality of the Year in 1976.
