Frank Oz’s illustrious career will be celebrated by the Museum of the Moving Image with screening series “The Magic of Oz: A Frank Oz Retrospective.”
All 15 films Oz directed will screen, ranging from “Little Shop of Horrors” to “The Muppets Take Manhattan” to “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Bowfinger.” Oz’s acting roles in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Inside Out,” plus his character creations for “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show,” will also be part of the lineup. The series will take place from October 4 to November 30.
“Frank Oz has been a revered and adored artist for generations, yet I’d argue he’s under-appreciated for his filmmaking, which he’s dedicated the past 40 years to,” curator of film Eric Hynes said.
“From the beginning he defied expectations, starting with his now-classic homage to the Hollywood studio musical and B-movie creature feature, ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ and continuing through...

Look at us! Here we are! Right where we belong ... in 4K Ultra HD, that is!
It's true: "The Muppets Take Manhattan" is getting a fresh coat of paint for its new release on home media courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The third "Muppets" feature film and, sadly, the last one that creator Jim Henson and puppeteer Richard Hunt worked on prior to their untimely deaths, "Manhattan" sees Kermit and the gang graduating from college and headed to New York City in the hopes of turning their humble little stage musical, "Manhattan Melodies," into a Broadway sensation. But as you might expect, the suits that run the theatrical industry aren't quite as enthused about the prospect of a show all about frogs and dogs and bears and chickens and ... stuff.
I've already gotten on my soapbox about how I feel "The Muppets Take Manhattan" doesn't get the credit it...

Everyone has their preferred screen rendition of "A Christmas Carol," and while I am partial to the 1951 film version, my heart belongs to another re-telling. I refer, of course, to 1992's "The Muppet Christmas Carol," which is not only one of all-time best Muppet movies but also (no joke) one of the most historically accurate depictions of Victorian fashion put to film.
"The Muppet Christmas Carol" was released two years after the death of The Muppets creator Jim Henson and is dedicated to both him and legendary Muppet puppeteer Richard Hunt (who died of complications related to HIV/AIDS less than 12 months prior to the movie's arrival). Henson was in the middle of talks with then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner to sell the Muppets to the Mouse House at the time of his death. It was, by most accounts, a very stressful deal that took a toll on Henson's well-being, so...

In a Comic-Con without a massive Star Wars panel or even a Joss Whedon lecture, those looking for any lightning in Hall H, could rely on Mark Hamill this afternoon.
A lot of these panels have the same wash-rinse-repeat formula: Actors talking passionately about their roles in projects we haven’t seen yet. Or worse, a great deal of backslapping among the cast about their favorite on set moments. Oh, and let’s not forget a trailer. But at Netflix’s panel for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Hamill took everyone back down memory lane, and it gave the whole 45 minute panel a greater sense of fanboy spiritual dept, especially for a prequel streaming series to a 37-year-old cult fantasy movie.

There was a time, not too long ago, when the world was swept up in full-on Muppet Mania. Adorable felt-and-foam constructions brought to convincing life by an array of artisans first overtook TV airwaves, then graduated to vinyl and celluloid. The excitement peaked with the release of the critters’ initial big screen adventure on June 22nd, 1979. The Muppet Movie will return to theaters across the country to commemorate that 40th birthday this summer via Fathom Events on July 25th and 30th. So what better time than now to wax poetic about the crowning and singular cinematic achievement that is The Muppet Movie?

Another wonderful moment from the archive to help you celebrate Christmas… Christmas is just around the corner, and you’re probably catching up on some old and new favorite films about the holidays. Among your viewings of A Christmas Story, Die Hard, and Gremlins, maybe you picked up a copy of The Muppet Christmas Carol, which has recently had a 20th anniversary Blu-ray release. This repackaging of the 1992 holiday classic includes a commentary track by Brian Henson as well as a new commentary by the Muppet characters themselves. One is more technical, and the other is more silly, but together they give a nice look at the making of one of the more faithful-yet-original adaptations of the Charles Dickens book. And on to the commentary… The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) Commentators: Brian Henson (director), Kermit the Frog, Gonzo the Great, and Rizzo the Rat 1. This was the first Muppet movie to be made after Jim Henson’s death...

It says a lot about the enduring appeal of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol that it's been able to withstand so many different movie retellings. From Alastair Sim's Scrooge through to Jim Carrey's cutting-edge 3D performance capture version, this festive tale of a bitter old miser who finds redemption over the holidays has well and truly stood the test of time.
Every Christmas these films crop up in the TV schedules, but there is one above all others that we always make an appointment to view. We're talking, of course, about The Muppet Christmas Carol. Michael Caine takes on the role of the tight-fisted Ebenezer Scrooge, while the Muppets fill a host of the supporting roles. There's Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as Fozziewig and Statler and Waldorf as Scrooge's old business partners Jacob and Robert Marley (the...

Lots of films are dedicated to, or in memory of someone. But it's not always clear why. We've been finding out...
Back when Breaking Bad returned for its final batch of episodes in August 2013, it had a dedication at the end of it. The card read 'Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco'. As it turned out, Kevin Cordasco was a 16-year old who had been battling cancer for seven years, who had met both Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan. Cordasco died before he could ever get to see the episode dedicated to him.
I found this such a moving story, that it got me wondering about the dedications that appear on films, and what the story behind them was. After all, the dedications are there for a reason. What I uncovered was some funny stories, mainly extremely sad ones, and some extremely moving dedications.

Sad news for Muppet fans: original performer Jerry Nelson has died at the age of 78. Muppet Central first reported the news, with it being verified by the CBC. Although no cause of death has been released, Nelson had struggled with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and prostate cancer. Nelson first began working with Jim Henson in 1965, when Frank Oz was drafted, and Henson needed a new right-hand performer for Rowlf the Dog on "The Jimmy Dean Show." When Oz failed his physical, Nelson stayed on board performing various characters for Henson's TV specials, including the full-bodied Thog the Monster and developing Kermit's nephew Robin. He joined "Sesame Street" in its second season developing the characters of Count von Count and Mr. Sunffleupagus, among others. A fruitful relationship with Richard Hunt, inspired the creation of the Two-Headed Monster. On "The Muppet Show," Nelson performed a variety of one-off characters, with some...

The Muppets and Sesame Street puppeteer on the film that has had hardened hacks blubbing into their notebooks
So, Kevin, Being Elmo is a film that will "connect across generations and delight viewers across the world for years to come". (1) How does it feel to have a movie about your life described like that?
It's nice! (2) The main reason I wanted to do it was just to go behind the scenes of a puppeteer's career; it's really a story about all the puppeteers I've known.
The screening I went to had a room full of hardened film hacks blubbing into their notebooks. What do you get out of watching it?
It's about a dream coming true. I wanted to be a puppeteer when I was 10 years old, then I created a character that became really popular. It's like a Cinderella story. Or a Cinderfella story.
You grew up in Baltimore,...

Here's hoping they film on opposite coasts.

Speaking of priests, Cardinal George has finally, quietly, issued an apology for repeatedly comparing gays and lesbians to the Kkk.

In what may be the most shocking movie news in years, Disney has canceled their Lone Ranger movie. The film was set to star Disney's most bankable star, Johnny Depp, along with hunky Armie Hammer in the title role. The sticking point was money, with a budget of $250 million (how many horses did they want?!). Disney is shelling out that much each for John Carter and The Great and Powerful Oz, both of which are under way, so I guess this was even too much for the Mouse. The movie could still come back if a deal can be reached, because Depp really wants to make the film.

November 18, 1985 was a day that changed children's television. It was on this day that Elmo, the furry red monster of 'Sesame Street,' came into his own, thanks to puppeteer Kevin Clash.
An extra for years, voiced on occasion by folks like Carol Spinney (Big Bird) and Richard Hunt (Scooter from 'The Muppet Show'), Clash turned the very minor character into a 3 1/2-year-old mainstay that, depending on your feelings, transformed 'Sesame Street' in a good or bad way.
Since his introduction to 'Sesame Street,' Elmo has become the face of the four-decade old series, appearing on talk shows, primetime series, his own movie ('Elmo in Grouchland') and on the toy shelves as Tickle Me Elmo. He even has his own 15-minute show-within-a-show on 'Sesame Street' titled 'Elmo's World.'

Shout Factory has settled into a pleasantly clockwork schedule of releasing new sets, but I still greet Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Xviii (Shout Factory, Not Rated, DVD-$59.97 Srp) with delight, because it means more episodes have made it out. This go round, we get Lost Continent, Crash Of The Moons, The Beast Of Yucca Flats, and Jack Frost. Bonus materials include new intros from Kevin Murphy & Frank Conniff,...

Fraggle Rock was the very first show on HBO and, in a lot of ways, the ultimate palate cleanser for all the episodic storytelling and creativity yet to come. After all, almost every day in Fraggle Rock included a clean moral, a pitch perfect song, a pure act of friendship, and a nice, pared-down script. But being a Jim Henson product, and his wide vision of a world symbiosis guiding it lightspeed ahead of any other kids show, inasmuch as it was a “kids show,” it's hard to describe Fraggle Rock as simply a first foray into entertainment. In fact, in this last season, it actually feels more like a final word.
At some point or another here, the fun-loving and usually independent Fraggle friends each get their own special interactions with the mysterious Gorgs, Doozers, and Silly Creatures (humans) they share the planet with, and each results in a transcendent amount of warmth,...

After years of workplace abuse and torture, the lab assistant from Muppet Labs, Beaker, is finally getting some recognition. Who would have thought that a 22-year-old character who makes unintelligible noises would win an award for best music video?
Beaker first appeared in September 1977, during the second season of The Muppet Show. Speaking in high-pitched squeeks, the minor character often ended up being the victim of crazy experiments conducted by Doctor Bunsen Honeydew (Dave Goez). Shy and googly-eyed, Beaker was brought to life via the talents of larger-than-life puppeteer Richard Hunt, who also gave us Scooter, Janice, Statler, and Sweetums. Hunt tragically died in 1992 at the age of 40 from AIDS, less than two years after the loss of Jim Henson.
Since the loss of Hunt, the red-haired Muppet has been performed by Steve Whitmire. Whitmire performs characters like Rizzo the Rat and, since Henson's passing, Kermit the Frog and Sesame Street's Ernie.

In some ways, the days of Fraggle Rock seem like such a thing of the past. It's been more than twenty years since the original Jim Henson series ended its run on HBO. Still, the happy little creatures have remained very popular in the Us as well as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2006, it was announced that the characters were being revived for an all-new feature film. That's still in the works and now, a new spin-off is making its way to television.
Fraggle Rock is the 1983 brainchild of innovative genius Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. In a world filled with lots of color and music, the Fraggles are happy creatures that live in an endless maze of underground caves. The series showcases the talents of Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Hans Helmut Dickow, Gerard Parkes, Steve Whitmire, Dave Goelz, Kathryn Mullen, Karen Prell, and Henson.
