Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Democratic powerbroker who served California and her political party for more than 30 years, becoming the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, died Thursday night, her office has confirmed. She was 90.
James Sauls, chief of staff to Sen. Feinstein, released the following statement this morning:
“Sadly, Senator Feinstein passed away last night at her home in Washington, D.C. Her passing is a great loss for so many, from those who loved and cared for her to the people of California that she dedicated her life to serving. Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right. At the same time, she was always willing to work with anyone, even those she disagreed with, if it meant bettering the lives of Californians or the betterment of our nation. There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca) was briefly hospitalized on Tuesday after a fall.
A spokesperson for the 90-year-old lawmaker said in a statement, “Senator Feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home.” TMZ first reported the news, but her office said that their original report was inaccurate in that she is not currently hospitalized.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that he spoke to Feinstein on Wednesday morning and “she said she suffered no injuries and briefly went to the hospital as a precaution. I’m glad she is back home now and is doing well.”
Feinstein was diagnosed with shingles earlier this year, something that kept her from Capitol Hill for nearly three months as she recovered. Her health has been the subject of intense speculation among reporters and Capitol Hill staffers,...

At last it can be revealed – the Under Siege star was prepared to go to extreme lengths to ensure he got to Washington
As promised last week, this column brings you a tale of Steven Seagal so barking that even those accustomed to his idiosyncrasies may find themselves surprised. Thanks to someone who almost certainly counts as Lost in Showbiz's most eminent reader, I have in my hand an old issue of leftwing critical journal the Baffler. Therein, like the heart of a mysterious lotus flower, lies an account of what was arguably the Under Siege legend's most bonkers move.
To wit, it is claimed he planned a Senate run. Not planned a Senate run like all kinds of American public figures plan one – which is to say, mulled it over in the shower, called a couple of people, then did nothing very much about it. No, back in 1992, Seagal...

Donald Trump has escalated his war of words with The Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington. A feud between the Celebrity Apprentice star and The Huffington Post erupted after the publication posted a tongue-in-cheek article which explored why Trump is so "moody". Trump initially responded by predicting that The Huffington Post will "die like AOL is dying", while also branding the author of the piece a "loser". He continued his attacks on Twitter on Tuesday (August 28) by mentioning that Arianna's ex-husband Michael Huffington came out as bisexual after their divorce. "Arianna (more)...

Samuel Goldwyn Films acquired U.S. rights to the Stephen Gyllenhaal-directed Grassroots, a character-driven comedy about the power of the people and the virtues of standing up for what you believe in. Pic is set in pre-Twitter 2001, as a political unknown named Grant Cogswell (Moore) decides he must take down Seattle City Councilman Richard McIver (Cedric the Entertainer). Grant has only one dream, but it’s a big one: an elegant monorail gliding silently above the city’s wet streets, with only a tiny footprint — “like a kids’ lemonade stand!” – on the ground. He is apoplectic with rage over McIver...

#54. Save the Date - Michael Mohan Following in the footsteps of a Drake Doremus of going from ultra low budget indie to low budget indie, Michael Mohan parlayed his 2010 feature One Too Many Movies (read our interview with Mohan) with a 2011 filler and Sundance accepted short Ex-Sex with what we hope will be a Sundance preem for his latest, Save the Date. With a cast that includes Alison Brie, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, Geoffrey Arend and Mark Webber, this would be a perfect item for the Premieres category - let the pre-fest bidding begin. Gist: Free spirited Sarah and responsible Beth are two sisters with different philosophies about love and relationships; Sarah is happy with the status quo and doesn’t see any reason to marry her musician boyfriend, Kevin, while Beth is obsessed with...

...and on Newsweek’s fawning profile of Huffington, which declares that “The Huffington Post may have figured out the future of journalism.” And that future -- though Newsweek will not say it, and barely even acknowledges this fact -- is that journalism will be the purview of the idle rich, and not a field in which anyone should ever again expect to earn a living. Daniel Lyons’ puff piece on Huffington opens with some apple polishing about the millions of visitors HuffPo gets and how it is “one of the most important news sites on the Web.” Following that is some sycophantic swooning about Huffington herself: It’s a humid July afternoon in New York—Huffington’s 60th birthday—and she’s sipping San Pellegrino water and nibbling on apple slices in her tiny office on the third floor of a building in New York’s SoHo. Michael Huffington, politician, philanthropist, businessman, and over all Big Deal is also a fantastic actor. In his debut role in my comedy Father vs Son, which just won the Film Critic's Society Award for Best Premiere at the Houston International Film Festival, Mr. Huffington exudes a powerful presence and stoic charm never before seen on film. Ever. You don't need 3D glasses--the man's talent leaps off the screen. Am I saying this because he is also the producer and financier of my movie? Yes and no. When I was writing the film Father vs Son with Paul Wolff, (who also stars as the father in mid-life crisis--how Paul got his part is another story) we came up with the character of Mr. Harrington. If the heroes of Father vs Son can convince Mr. Harrington to purchase a mysterious, yet...

It hardly ever happens this way. I get a DVD in the mail. I'm told it's an animated film directed by "a girl from Urbana." That's my home town. It is titled "Sita Sings the Blues." I know nothing about it, and the plot description on IMDb is not exactly a barn-burner: An animated version of the epic Indian tale of Ramayana set to the 1920's jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw. Uh, huh. I carefully file it with other movies I will watch when they introduce the 8-day week.
I get an e-mail from Betsy, my old pal who worked with me on The News-Gazette. "Did you see the film by the mayor's daughter?" This intrigues me. The daughter is named Nina Paley. I do a Google run and discover that Hiram Paley was mayor from 1973-1977. I am relieved. This means the "girl" probably didn't make the film as a high school class project.

New York -- Josh Dean and Heather Stephens are set for battle in Joe Ballarini's indie comedy "Father vs. Son."
The film follows a newly divorced father (Paul Wolff) who moves in with his son (Dean) and joins him on the dating circuit. One might say chaos ensues.
Ballarini and star Wolff co-wrote the film and are executive producing. The helmer is best known as a screenwriter, penning Lionsgate's recent zombie comedy "Dance of the Dead" and adapting the comic series "Maintenance" for McG at Warners.
Michael Huffington and Brian James Crewe are producing, and Jon Wolff is serving as co-executive producer. Production is under way in Los Angeles.
