Keke Palmer is set to star in and executive produce The Burbs, a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 movie of the same name starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. Peacock has given the project a straight-to-series order. Celeste Hughey (Dead to Me) will write and executive produce it.
“Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple — with Palmer playing the wife — returning to the husband’s childhood home,” reads the description. “Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.” The series will be filmed in the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood, which is the same location as the original movie. As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just made its way online, and with this one we’re celebrating the birthday of the late, great director Tobe Hooper by looking at one of his more underrated horror films: the 2004 release Toolbox Murders (watch it Here)! You can hear all about it in the embed above.
Toolbox Murders is technically a remake of the 1978 film The Toolbox Murders, but it’s very different from the source material. Written by Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, this one has the following synopsis: Young couple Steve and Nell move into a once fashionable, but now decaying, apartment block in Los Angeles, and soon realise that a number of young female residents have met unusually violent deaths. Before long, Nell makes some disturbing discoveries about the building’s manager and her fellow tenants.
The film stars Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Marco Rodríguez, Rance Howard,...

Before Netflix's reboot series Resident Evil set the internet on fire, director Johannes Roberts crafted an alternate take on the beloved video game. With "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," Roberts ignored Paul W.S. Anderson's popular film series adaptation and took the story back to its roots -- focusing on Shinji Mikami's groundbreaking survival horror tone in "Resident Evil" and "Resident Evil 2." Roberts has described his film as a love letter to the games, as his film chronicles the last days of the fictional Raccoon City. Once a booming company town, the declining town suffers a devastating outbreak of the T-virus -- thanks to the Umbrella Company -- that turns its residents into cannibalistic zombies.
Roberts' protagonists, the S.T.A.R.S. Team, are directly inspired by playable characters from the video games, including Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario), her brother Chris (Robbie Amell), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen...

Bert I. Gordon’s career groove of shrinking and bloating various animals and people bottoms out in this trashy drive-in groaner: it’s colorful but nigh-unwatchable. The exploitation target is sci-fi and the teen musical, with incompatible helpings of pre-teen ‘cutes’ and girlie show jiggle for the raincoat crowd. The show apparently did well, but I heard mostly about resentful walkouts. Gordon’s early films have far more charm; this one mostly shows contempt for his audience. For fans that think there’s Camp value here, the Blu-ray transfer is sensationally good, as is the reproduction of Jack Nitzsche’s rock music score. The only thing to call this movie is Poor, but how can that be when I find so much to say about it?

There are a lot of amazing celebrity families in Hollywood that have caught our eyes over the years. There's Goldie Hawn and daughter Kate Hudson, not to mention Hawn's partner Kurt Russell and her two other actor children, Oliver Hudson and Wyatt Russell. But they aren't the only Hollywood family making us stop and stare.
Ron Howard and daughter Bryce Dallas Howard have been taking over the entertainment industry both together and on their own for years. Acting runs in the family with the Howards (their patriarch was Rance Howard), and it doesn't look like these two are slowing down anytime soon. In addition to acting for most of his life, Ron is an iconic producer, director, and writer. His daughter is basically his mini-me, and has made a huge name for herself with roles in Jurassic World and The Help, among others. Together, they are one of Hollywood's most powerful father-daughter teams.

As Gold Derby exclusively reported, embattled actor Jeffrey Tambor previously exited the Best Comedy Actor Emmy race for Amazon’s “Transparent” amid harassment allegations. But now we’ve learned that Tambor will still be eligible at the 2018 Emmys for his work on Netflix’s “Arrested Development” in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category. Tambor left “Transparent,” the show that earned him two Emmy Awards, after reports surfaced of inappropriate behavior on set from costar Trace Lysette and personal assistant Van Barnes. Despite that controversy, Netflix has decided to go ahead with their Emmy push for Tambor for Season 5 of “Arrested Development,” which streamed May 29.

Although Rance Howard was not in attendance at the Broken Memories movie premiere Tuesday night in Beverly Hills, he was well represented by his son, producer Ron Howard, and granddaughter, actress Bryce Dallas Howard.
Before the screening of the film produced by Digital Jungle Pictures, the Howard family was gifted by Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles with framed images captured by photographer Mark de Paola of Rance Howard and his wife, the late Judy Howard, who died in February.

Jerry Lewis turned 90 in March. Many fans, me included, wished hard to see this legendary comedian and virtuoso filmmaker cut loose on screen one more time. Max Rose doesn't grant that wish. For starters, his first film in 20 years is not a comedy — it's a sober, sad-eyed study of an old man on the ropes. Max, a former jazz pianist who never quite made it, sits alone in a house haunted by memories, mostly of his wife Eva (the great Claire Bloom) who has just died. At her funeral, his eulogy is tortured,...

A film centering on octogenarians isn’t an easy sell. Not even when you get a legend like Jerry Lewis to come out of retirement to deliver his first starring role in twenty years. So you have to give Daniel Noah credit — he got it done. And after a few years producing some effective genre films with his shingle SpectreVision, Max Rose also becomes a return for him to the director’s chair. He admits that he couldn’t see anyone else doing the material justice, the script itself based in part on the struggles he witnessed with his grandfather when his grandmother passed away. This passion project looks to shed light on the emotional turmoil of love as it pertains to a segment of society we often dismiss: senior citizens.
Love runs deep. At least we hope it does — the divorce rate probably has something else to say about this fact.

“They did this in one take, which I hate.”
David Fincher loves Chinatown.
Of course, anyone who appreciates brilliant filmmaking should feel the same way, especially if they also appreciate themes of human nature drenched in cynicism. The film is easily one of the smartest, most beautiful gut-punches to come out of Hollywood in the ’70s (or any other decade for that matter), and it remains a powerful commentary on greed, bureaucracy, and the futility of good intentions.
Fincher sat down with Robert Towne, the film’s writer, for a commentary, and it makes for a fascinating look at a classic film.
Keep reading to see what I heard on the commentary for Roman Polanski’s Chinatown.

Is satire obsolete? Our appalling present political reality has surpassed some of the wildest jokes in director Joe Dante's 'exaggerated, outrageous' 1997 cable movie. Doris Roberts' death is causing turmoil for a movie she was set to headline ... because she's the third big name attached to the flick who has died. One of the last movie roles Doris signed on for was the female lead in "Old Soldiers" ... which is still securing its last bit of financing before it starts production. Problem is ... 2 of the other major roles belonged to Mickey Rooney and James Best ... who died in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Warner Home Entertainment has recently released their special edition DVD of director Joe Dante’s “Innerspace” on Blu-ray. The 1987 film is a sci-fi comedy that afforded Martin Short and Meg Ryan early career leading roles in a tale of inspired lunacy. The premise of the script centers on a narcissistic former military test pilot Tuck Pendelton (Dennis Quaid) who volunteers for an unprecedented scientific experiment. Doctors have the technology to shrink him and inject him into the body of a rabbit. They also obviously have the ability to bring him back into the outside world where he can resume his normal activities at his normal size. The purpose of the experiment is to allow medical technicians to eventually inject operatives into human beings so that they can perform miracle surgeries. However, there are some bad guys who are looking to benefit from the amazing technology by selling it to the highest bidder.

Ron Howard is an articulate film director. So it should come as no surprise that he is also an articulate speaker. He also has a way with anecdotes, as one might expect, given the length and diversity of his career.

I try to be unbiased, and for the most part, I’m pretty successful. I’m only human though, and occasionally I’m swayed by who might be in the film. Some actors bring a disdain with them that the only hope of me getting past my biases is an undeniably good film. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I can give a pass to a pretty mediocre film if it features someone I like. This one has my kryptonite for being objective, Ms. Rose McGowan. I’ve always dug her in just about anything she’s done. Even films that were not so great for the above stated reasons. She definitely has a presence. I’ve seen her evolve from an evil ingenue in “Jawbreaker”, to being a part of the mainstream lexicon in “Charmed”, and now transitioning from younger to...

Starting its limited release in the Us earlier in the month, and arriving in the UK at the end of next week, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska has been one of the most talked-about films on the festival circuit this year.
Payne’s follow-up to The Descendants had its world premiere at Cannes in the spring – you can read our review here – and has been tipped to earn Bruce Dern a Best Actor nomination ever since.
Last week, Paramount released two new character featurettes for Dern and his on-screen wife, Kate Grant (June Squibb). And as promised, the studio has returned this week with the final profile for Dern’s on-screen son, David, played brilliantly by Will Forte.
After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a cantankerous father (Bruce Dern) thinks he’s struck it rich, and wrangles his son (Will Forte) into taking a road trip to claim the fortune.

Set in the wide expanses of middle America, Alexander Payne's Nebraska still manages to feel small and claustrophobic a lot of the time. While in some ways the film is charming and gentle, it's largely acidic and sour. The motivations at the heart of the film are love, but the weathered and worn souls that inhabit Payne's windswept, black-and-white landscape, conjuring memories of Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show, are either too tired or too afraid to admit they even care any longer. The weight of this burden is not only seen on the characters' faces but felt by the audience throughout. Meet Woody (Bruce Dern), the grumbling, aged soul at the center of Payne's story. He received a "winning" sweepstakes mailer, the kind most of us know to throw away, and now believes he's the winner of one million dollars. Tucking his winning ticket into his left breast pocket,...

Each week Cinelinx will chose one director for an in-depth examination of the “signatures” that they leave behind in their work. This week, with the release of Rush, we examine the trademark style and calling signs of Ron Howard as director.
Ron Howard is an atypical Hollywood success story. Starting his career as a child actor, Howard became a star as an adult and then a consistent producer and director. Few child actors before or since have been able to maintain the type of career that Ron Howard did. He grew up in a family that wasn’t new to Hollywood and the way it treats its actors. For that reason, Howard’s parents controlled a lot of his professional career and helped to guide him to become the success he is today. His fascination with film is what allowed him to leap from child actor to successful film director.
