Macbeth (of the Oppressed) Written by William Shakespeare Adapted and Directed by Tom Slot Fab Marquee Productions The Theater at the 14th Street NYC October 8-October 24, 2015
Shakespeare is one of the most frequently adapted playwrights in the English language, to the point that Shakespearean adaptation studies has become its own academic sub-field, and Macbeth, with its gothic elements and relatively streamlined tragedy of ambition, is a strong contender for his most frequently adapted play. Aside from more straightforward versions like the upcoming Michael Fassbender movie, the film Scotland Pa, for instance, reimagined it as the story of a ruthless fast-food entrepreneur, Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood transposed it into feudal Japan, Mickey B filtered it through the experiences and language of Northern Irish inmates, and no fewer than two heavy metal bands have turned it into concept albums. Tom Slot’s adaptation, Macbeth (of the Oppressed) is less radical in...

On tap right now is the first teaser for indie maven Mel House's latest terror tale Spavine, which is still hitting the fest circuit and currently causing quite a buzz with distributors. Dig it!
Spavine was written and directed by Tiffany Heath and stars Denton Blane Everett (Psychic Experiment), Tiffany Heath (Mulberry Stains), and Jake Austin. House produces with Heath and Nick W. Nicholson. Phil Nichols/Facades FX handled the special makeup effects, including the mask you see on the poster below.
"With this film the Spavine team set out to strike a balance between classic gore like Texas Chainsaw and Hitchcockian psychological suspense," says Heath. "Spavine has an art-house film look but isn't 'snobby' in that it really cares about the audience and gives them the proper dose of gore, terror, suspense, and overall real life madness. There is nothing supernatural in the movie. Every bit of this...

"I made the choice to do indie films, and I’ve had a lot of fun. I’ve had much better roles than a lot of the women that are working in Hollywood because I get to do the sort of crazy, nutty characters... like in American Nightmare I play a psycho serial killer. Very seriously. Not for laughs. I get to play really good roles, and that’s why I’ve always been drawn to it."
That quote was from a 2008 interview with Debbie Rochon. Seeing how we're celebrating Indie Horror Month here at Dread Central, I thought it would be nice to focus this month's Tip of the Scalpels on indie stars (don't worry, Stephen King fans, we'll get back to him very soon). You know that you're in trouble when the protagonist of your film must be reminded in the very first scene to remember his medication. (Cue the close-up of prescription bottle changing hands.) If only I had been reminded to take my medication before watching Psychic Experiment, maybe I would have been in the proper state of mind to follow it. Describing the plot of this newest film from Texas indie filmmaker Mel Closet Space House is a bit daunting. There are so many characters and story threads wandering around the wildly ambitious, yet convoluted, screenplay that it would take multiple viewings to sort out all the bizarre goings-on. Even with the meds, my prescription simply isn't strong enough to watch this epic horror/sci/fi mash-up a second time.
This is what I can tell you for certain: Dr.

Exclusive Interview: Actress Adrienne King Talks Psychic Experiment, Her Return to Acting, and More!
Today, December 6th, Lionsgate unleashes writer/director Mel House's Psychic Experiment on DVD shelves everywhere (the film is also currently available on VOD platforms). It features an all-star cast including Katie Featherston, Debbie Rochon, Reggie Bannister, Glenn Morshower, Kathy Lamkin and Shannon Lark as well as the subject of this interview, Friday the 13th's original final girl herself- Adrienne King.
Psychic Experiment is centered around an idyllic, small, self-sufficient community which seems like the perfect neighborhood on the surface. After all, everything you could possibly need is within walking distance. But eventually the pastoral exterior conceals a dark past and an even darker secret, and as a group of individuals - each with their own ties and agendas with the town and each other - converge on the enclave, strange things begin to happen. Very strange things. Strange enough to test - and then break - the very fabric of reality itself.

Dread chatted today with Friday the 13th and its sequel star Adrienne King, who following her beheading of the infamous Mrs. Voorhees in the seminal 1980 slasher flick is now once again spilling the red stuff, this time with her Crystal Lake Wine label, the debut of her new ‘2005 Survivor’s Syrah’ and the product tie-in short films Back to the Lake and its brand-new eight-minute sequel Back to the Lake Part II. Read on for a look.
Written, edited and shot by Curtis Pew, Back to the Lake Part II stars Dallas Bobbitt as ‘Tommy Hardy,’ a wine enthusiast beleaguered by Jason Voorhees, and was shot at the original filming location of Friday the 13th’s ‘Camp Crystal Lake’ in Blairtown, New Jersey, with an appearance by King herself.

Parrish Randall is a Texas actor who has a lot of cool stuff going on. He’s part of the team putting together the “Don’t Look in the Basement” remake together and he recently got to work on one of the Chillerama segments that we’ll be seeing this fall. Randall talks about his filming experiences and a few more upcoming projects in the works. Check out my latest Versus with actor and all around cool guy Parrish Randall.
Brian S- First off, how'd you get into acting and filmmaking?
Parrish Randall- I grew up watching the old classics on TV...you know, the Bogie, Jimmy Stewart, John Garfield type of films and was always mesmerized that the medium of film could take the viewer on adventures for two hours that one could never imagine going on. Pretty cool, I thought, even at six years old watching these films.

Hot on the heels of their successful premiere at the Bram Stoker Film Festival last month (click here for details and photos from that event), the folks behind Renfield: The Un-Dead are taking Afm by storm and in character.
Co-producer/production designer Melissa Nichols (who also appears in the film as Natasha the Vampire Oracle) dropped us a line with an update from Afm: "We're here now and have a screening of Renfield on Friday night. We had a screening on Wednesday, and it went really well. Everyone who saw it said it was fun and they loved it. We've had a lot of interest for domestic distribution, and we've got appointments for several foreign markets scheduled as well. We've got appointments booked for every day of the show.
On Thursday Lloyd Kaufman invited Phil [Nichols (who also produced and wrote the screenplay)] to make an appearance at the "Troma-dance" press conference and even gave him the mike to address the crowd.

We've been tracking the progress of director Bob Willems' Renfield: The Undead for quite a while, and now it looks like we're approaching the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. The rough cut is done, and an official website and trailer are both due in the next few weeks. We're not sure how they found the time, but the filmmakers just sent over a couple of new concept posters for us to share with our readers.
Willems and crew are in heavy post and compositing for the film, but there is some other news: Jeff Walton (Curse of the Puppet Master, Shrieker, Invisible Mom, Invisible Dad, The Brotherhood 1&2) is composing the music for Renfield: The Undead. In addition to premiering at the Bram Stoker Film Festival in Whitby, England this October, Renfield will also be screened at The American Film Market in November.

You may recall a few months ago we told you about Final Girl Films' competition for indie horror filmmakers looking to make their next short film project. The contest was based on scripts only, and the first runner-up was Bryan Ryan for "The Guest". Dread Central recently had a chance to chat with Bryan about how he first got involved in filmmaking, what's up with "The Guest", and his future plans.
Dread Central: What made you decide to get into filmmaking?
Bryan Ryan: I can trace the whole thing back to two films: Disney's Pinocchio and Jaws. The first for the way it petrified me as a child. I know that I will never forget the effect Pinocchio had on me. Now, the same goes for Jaws, but it goes a step further because of the sheer ingenuity it took to tell That story in That way. And to...

To call Mel House's new film Walking Distance a labor of love would be an understatement: initiated more than ten years ago as a script for a zombie flick that evolved into something almost unimaginably more complex, the writer-director has developed its elaborate, intricate, and yes, horror fans, gory concepts into a mashed-up labyrinth of genre storytelling. Redubbed Experimental Activity internationally where it has already secured distribution, the film advances quickly towards the silver screen, bolstered by appearances from horror luminaries like Adrienne King (the original Friday the 13th), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm) and Katie Featherston (Paranormal Activity), while a cast of newcomers including Denton Blane Everett and...

If there's anybody out in the indie world that sends us updates on their projects more often than the multi-talented Phil Nichols, I don't know who it is. Today he sent over a new batch of stills from Vampire Diaries Renfield, but best of all, they include the first shot of one of the creatures Nichols' Facades FX is doing for the film.
Phil, who, along with portraying Renfield, also wrote the screenplay, tells us, "Week 6 has wrapped. We did a lot of flying FX and aerial fight work on green screen for the climax. These pictures are from the Harkers' lair and all the naughty goings on that will happen in there..."
Besides Nichols, the stars include Julin, John Stevens (as Dracula), Cory Hart, Shelley Boozer, Mel House, Paul Damon, Joe Grisaffi, Tyler Tackett, and Keli Wolfe. The director is Bob Willems.
The new pictures begin on Page 4 of our Renfield gallery.

Phil Nichols, who portrays Renfield in the currently filming Vampire Diaries Renfield, dropped us a line with an update on the shoot and provided us with a batch of new photos to share with Dread Central readers.
Here's what Phil told us, "We're winding down Week 5 and are 3/4 through shooting the script. We are working to make the deadline to premiere the film at the Bram Stoker Film Festival in Whitby, England this October.
Last night we wrapped the 1895 flashbacks with Renfield. We're keeping Count Dracula's make-up a secret and won't release pics of his face until the movie premieres, but here's a look at the Brides of Dracula (Denise Williamson, Reem Al-Hellou, and Michelle James)."
Along with Nichols (who also wrote the screenplay) and the aforementioned Brides, the stars include Julin, John Stevens (as Dracula), Cory Hart, Shelley Boozer, Mel House, Paul Damon, Joe Grisaffi, Tyler Tackett, and Keli Wolfe.

When a young actress named Adrienne King signed on for a small horror film called Friday the 13th, she had no idea that it would end up becoming one of the most successful independent films with a budget of around one million dollars and a gross of over 50 times that to date and that it would become one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood (spawning ten sequels including Freddy vs. Jason and one remake so far).
While Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th was another step forward for reinvigorating 80s horror films, it was King’s portrayal of creative spirit Alice that centered the film and solidified her place as one of Dread Central’s most beloved final girls.
When King took the role as Alice, she was already a 25-year veteran in the entertainment industry. I asked King to discuss how it felt to grow up as a child...

After yesterday's surprising post regarding the name change of the indie horror flick Walking Distance to Experimental Activity , we double-checked with writer/director Mel House to officially set the record straight. An article on The Hollywood Reporter announced the title change, which bared resemblance to actress Katie Featherston's other film Paranormal Activity . (Featherston appears in both.) Producer/star James Lamarr issued a press statement to Dread Central stating the following: "Our title is still Walking Distance . The alternate title that Showcase came up with after they acquired the international rights over the weekend applies to the foreign market only. They felt they needed a catchier title for that market, and we gave them permission to change it....

Just yesterday I contacted director Mel House to find out if Katie Featherston from Paranormal Activity was having any impact on his film Walking Distance, and it turns out she did. Showcase Entertainment has acquired the international rights to the film that has now been retitled Experimental Activity, a very obvious cash-in attempt on Paranormal Activity's success. Showcase president David Jackson said, "clearly having the fastest-rising star in the business is a feather in the cap, but we feel the film stands on its own as a cool psychological thriller."
