Albert Pyun’s 1982 fantasy adventure The Sword and the Sorcerer may not be the most fondly remembered epic of its era, but it was wildly successful. In the early 1980s, the sword and soccer genre experienced a revival, with Hollywood anticipating that Conan the Barbarian, Universal’s mega-budget adaptation of the Robert E. Howard pulp novels would be the next Star Wars. It didn’t quite happen, but before it even reached theaters, dozens of low-budget Conan riffs were in the works. One that hit theaters first was 1982’s The Sword and the Sorcerer, which grossed a spectacular (for the era) $39.1 million, actually outgrossing Conan in North America by 1 million dollars (at a fraction of the budget).

Albert Pyun, the director behind such low-budget B-movies as The Sword and the Sorcerer, Cyborg and Nemesis, has died. He was 69.

Did Quentin Tarantino stumble this time out? His tale of western killers sharing a snowbound cabin builds almost zero suspense, and the verbal excess and violent grossness lack Tarantino's usual clever, wickedly funny edge. And 70mm cooped up in a dim interior? It's A Long Day's Journey into Lincoln Logs. Totally dig Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ennio Morricone, though. “You only need to hang mean bastards, but mean bastards you need to hang.”
The Hateful Eight is, as its title suggests, a sort of inverted Magnificent Seven, its cast of colorful characters coming together not to put aside their lone wolf differences in unlikely defense of a pastoral dream but to bite, tear, shoot, hack, poison, stab, and hang each other in pursuit of goals which, as the film progresses and the tide of blood comes in, are sucked into the void like dirty water down a drain. It’s Tarantino’s bleakest film, a pressure cooker full of comprehensively human beasts whose slowly revealed foibles and virtues inspire just enough empathy to make their messy deaths an emotional ordeal...

As promised, I’m back writing again about filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s eighth cinematic outing this week. Whenever a new movie of his opens, it’s really an event, so this is no exception. Of late, Tarantino has been getting the attention of the Academy, so this is definitely a high profile release. Buzz had been steadily building for months now, with folks especially excited for the 70mm roadshow version being unveiled in select theaters. I’ve seen and dug the flick a great deal, so it’s a pleasure to be able to speak more about how good this film is. I praised Bruce Dern’s work in it a few days ago, but now I’m gushing over the whole thing, as well as speculating about its Oscar prospects. Once again, this is Tarantino’s eight film, centering on a group of less than savory characters convening on a single location,...

Quentin Tarantino gets star on Hollywood Walk Fame: No police protests or anti-Tarantino rally Quentin Tarantino, who has been making movies for nearly a quarter of a century, has finally gotten his own personal star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A prime location, too: it can be photographed and/or stepped on right in front of the Chinese Theatre. Tarantino's star-unveiling ceremony took place on Monday, Dec. 21, '15, with several cast members of his latest movie, The Hateful Eight, in attendance. Now, why is this “news”? Back in October, the Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Django Unchained filmmaker dared to attend an anti-police brutality rally in New York City – days after a local police officer had been killed while pursuing a suspected thief.

There are many, many things to like about Quentin Tarantino’s new film The Hateful Eight. A great deal of them are being talked about all throughout the industry by various writers, but one aspect of Tarantino’s eighth outing is being woefully neglected. What is that? Well, the supporting turn by Bruce Dern, of course. Is it the flashiest in the movie? No, but that’s not the point. Dern is one of the great character actors of the last half century, and seeing him really get to dive into a role like this and work with Tarantino is something special. In a flick that’s rarely understated, they manage something fairly subtle, so I figured that was worth appreciating a bit today. The film opens this week, so it makes perfect sense. For those unaware, this is, ironically enough, Tarantino film number eight, and centers around a group...

It has been a long and twisty road to principal photography on The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino’s latest foray into the western genre. First Gawker leaked the script, resulting in the filing of a lawsuit and Tarantino’s proclamation that he did not intend to make the film. What followed was a single public reading of the script, the lawsuit being dropped, and, finally, Tarantino’s announcement that he would make the movie after all. Now the day is finally here, as The Weinstein Company announces that the director has begun filming on The Hateful Eight.
The Hateful Eight takes place in post-Civil War Wyoming and follows a group of eight people who get trapped during a blizzard. Taking refuge from the storm at a haberdashery in a mountain pass, the group are soon involved in a plot of betrayal and deception. We can expect plenty of the good old Tarantino dialogue,...

The Weinstein Company says that "The Hateful Eight," the ninth film from writer/director Quentin Tarantino, has officially begun filming in rocky Telluride, Colorado—though the film is set in Wyoming a few years after the Civil War. Starring Channing Tatum, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Demian Bechir and Walton Goggins, the Western follows a group of stagecoach travelers trapped after a blizzard sends them off course. Amongst the crew are two bounty hunters and a rogue Confederate soldier. New talent has jumped aboard, however, including the excellent Gene Jones—who was stunningly good as a Jim Jones type in Ti West's "The Sacrament"— along with James Parks ("Kill Bill"), Zoe Bell ("Death Proof") and "Django Unchained"'s Dana Gourrier, Lee Horsley, Craig Stark, Keither Jefferson and Belinda Owino. Tarantino, fighting the good fight for cinema as ever, will present his epic in.

And so the countdown begins. The Weinstein Company announced today that Quentin Tarantino has started principal photography on his 70mm western "The Hateful Eight." As we know, the main ensemble features Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern and Channing Tatum, and a new batch of supporting talent has also been revealed. The most familiar to Tarantino fans will be Zoe Bell, who appeared in "Death Proof" as well as very briefly in "Django Unchained," though she appeared wearing a mask. The rest of the players are mostly previous collaborators, including James Parks from the "Kill Bill" movies and Dana Gourrier, Keith Jefferson, Lee Horsley, Craig Stark and Belinda Owino, who all appeared in 'Django.' The only newbie to Tarantino's mileu is Gene Jones, whose brief film CV includes roles in "No Country For Old Men" and "Oz.

Quentin Tarantino has very quickly, but not so quietly, found a new niche for his filmmaking talents as a teller of tall tales with a historical bent. He’s less interested in historical accuracy than he is historical tomfoolery, but that never lessens the sheer entertainment he finds in mankind’s relatively recent foibles and misdeeds. From Inglourious Basterds‘ band of World War II Nazi-killers to his latest film’s vengeful slave turned bounty hunter, Tarantino has shown a knack for fitting his charismatic and electric characters into unexpected historical contexts with entertaining as hell results. It’s 1858 in America, and Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) is a dentist on a mission. It’s light on tooth decay, heavy on bloodshed and utterly unrelated to the field of dentistry. He’s a bounty hunter whose latest targets, The Brittle Brothers, present a challenge in that he has no idea what they look like. Undeterred...

Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," a Western-style film set in the south two years before the civil war, features a star-studded ensemble. "Django Unchained" opens in theaters on Christmas Day. One of the heaviest ensembles in a film this year, Django Unchained is Quentin Tarantino’s latest work. Quentin has always utilized a substantial number of actors in his films, and this film does the same. Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio headline this tale of Southern revenge. Franco Neri, the original Django, makes an appearance. James Russo and James Remar had a brief reunion during frigid filming in Lone Pine, California. Dennis Christopher, Don Johnson, Walton Goggins, Dana Gourrier, Nichole Galicia, Laura Cayouette, David Steen, Ato Essandoh, Sammi Rotibi, Clay Donahue Fontenot, Escalante Lundy and Miriam F. Glover, all joined Django Unchained when the production made its way to a warmer location: New Orleans,...

Here's the story of how I waited for 29 years to see a sequel ... that turned out to be one of the worst films I've ever seen. As a very young movie freak, I was madly in love with a tongue-in-cheek, gore-laden sword and sandals action-fest called The Sword and the Sorcerer. My friends and I probably watched it a half-dozen times over the course of a few years, and one of the most delicious things about the flick arrived just before the end credits: "Talon will return in Tales of the Ancient Empire." (Talon was the cocky, swaggering mega-hero, as played by Lee Horsley.) The years dragged by, and whenever I revisited (or discussed) The Sword and the Sorcerer, that promised sequel always...

Seemingly always en vogue, gangsters have been especially so in recent years. The grand seigneur of American cinema, Martin Scorsese, finally won his long-deserved first Academy Award for Best Achievement in Directing for “The Departed” in 2007. Michael Mann’s 2009 effort “Public Enemies” was a big-budget production with high-dollar stars. The HBO drama “The Sopranos” attracted millions of viewers per week for eight years. “Sopranos” writer Terry Winter teamed up with Scorsese in 2010 for another acclaimed gangster series, “Boardwalk Empire,” which won two Golden Globes earlier this year. For some the Easter holiday was a time of work, not hunting for chocolate eggs and bunnies, and one such individual is director Albert Pyun, who dropped us a line over the weekend with an update on his Tales of an Ancient Empire along with a batch of new stills.
According to Pyun, "All the shooting is now finished, and here are some new stills. The first is from one of the last shoots with Victoria Maurette ("Kara") and Jessica Delgado ("Levana"). This is a set still and not how the scene looks in the movie, but it's pretty cool. Second is a green screen shot of the three primary assassins after Sorbo and company. It's not composited yet but is still a nice visual. Next is Dernier (Xavier Declie) being seduced by Kara. This is followed by Delgado as Levana, Maurette's Kara being turned, and finally, Maurette in full vampire assassin mode.

Director Albert Pyun sent us over a peek at some new teaser art for his forthcoming Tales of an Ancient Empire featuring its newest co-star, Victoria Maurette, who portrays a daywalking vampire assassin in the film.
Never one to shy away from graphic sex and violence, Pyun promises the following from Maurette's character: "Victoria is really playing a different vampire -- a creature who is aroused by perverse violence and is sexually gratified by inflicting ritualistic torture on her victims.
I don't think there's been a more frightening character in fantasy films. She's not a villain; she's a psychotic and depraved killer."

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.
This week is an 80s extravaganza, as we have the first season of 'Matt Houston,' the first season of 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King,' a 'Wiseguy' collector's edition, and even a 'Tenspeed and Brownshoe' complete series set.
For those who have never heard of the latter, it was a comedic private eye show starring Ben Vereen. I remember the reviews for the show were outrageous, but for some reason, the show was very short-lived (which is why we're getting a complete series set).
I'm very, very tempted to get 'Matt Houston' and 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King,' though I don't know if they will hold up today. I'm guessing that 'Scarecrow' will hold up better than the Lee Horsley show.
'Charlie & Lola' - Vol. 10 'The Commish' - Season 1 'Greek' - Chapter 4 'Hannah Montana' - Vol.
