I remember my mom begging me to watch "This Is Us" back when it first hit the air in 2016, and as soon as I tuned in, I became forever intertwined with the story of the Pearson family. Part of what makes this show so heartwarmingly unique is the family's diversity and the wide range of challenges the characters endure throughout the series. It provides a viewing experience where anyone and everyone watching can find a character to relate to in one way or another. The show's wholesome nature and endless parallels between the Pearsons' story and any family were what made it so special. After six years of captivating hearts nationwide, the emotional series finale of "This Is Us" aired on May 24 and left me with a reminder of exactly why I connected so deeply with this make-believe family from the very beginning.

When the 2021 Emmys nominations are announced on July 13, don’t be surprised when Sterling K. Brown receives his fifth consecutive bid for “This Is Us” (and his eighth overall). Brown has been an Emmy magnet ever since he broke onto the awards scene with 2016’s limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson.” He won that supporting race, then took home a lead Emmy the following year for playing Randall Pearson on NBC’s family drama. Skb earned two additional bids for his comedy stylings in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”. It was recently announced that “This Is Us” is ending in 2022 with Season 6.

After hearing the life story of his birth mother, Laurel Dubois, on tonight’s episode of “This Is Us,” Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) had a cathartic experience screaming in the middle of a lake in New Orleans — something fans had just learned Laurel herself did when she was overcome with emotion. And during Randall’s very loud night swimming session, he came face to face with his biological mother in a scene Brown thinks wasn’t just in Randall’s mind — or absinthe-induced, even though Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) kept joking about the alcohol all day — but an actual spiritual moment.
“I choose to see it as a miracle,” Brown told TheWrap. “In a line that got cut, Hai [played by Vien Hong] asks Randall if he’s a spiritual person. And Randall says, ‘If I can’t see it,...

If there is one thing Randall Pearson knows with complete certainty after Tuesday night’s episode of “This Is Us” it’s that his biological mother, Laurel Dubois, loved him. And though Randall (Sterling K. Brown) was only able to hear of his late birth mother’s love through the words of her dear friend and partner, Hai (played by Vien Hong), fans actually saw through flashbacks just how heartbreaking it was for Laurel to be unable to ever see her son again due to everything that happened after she made one terrible decision.
And Jennifer C. Holmes, who plays young Laurel, hopes that now that viewers know Laurel’s backstory, they can understand why Randall’s mother couldn’t find him or his father William after miraculously coming back to life following her post-labor overdose on heroin in the Season 5 premiere.

This Is Us sure loves a devastating backstory, and we can't help but love it too. Tonight's episode told the tale of what happened to Randall's birth mother before and after Randall (Sterling K. Brown) was born, and it was, in typical This Is Us fashion, both wildly sad and extremely poetic. We're also pretty sure there's a movie in there that we would watch. Basically, before she even met William (Jermel Nakia/Ron Cephas Jones), Laurel (Jennifer Holmes) fell in love with Hai (Vien Hong) in New Orleans. She met him when he thought she was drowning, but she was actually just letting out some rage in the river. They had to hide their love from her rich and powerful...

“This Is Us” returned tonight with an episode that answered the question of whether or not Randall’s biological mother, Laurel, is still alive, following the revelation that she didn’t actually die shortly after he was born. The lingering plot point is one fans have been wondering about since she gasped back to life at the end of the Season 5 premiere and it was finally resolved in a phone call between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and an older Asian man named Hai (Vien Hong), whom viewers found out earlier in the season knew young Laurel (Jennifer Holmes) in some way.
Hai reached out to Randall after seeing the viral video of Randall undressing in his councilman chambers when he thought the camera was off after a live-stream announcement. In the message Randall gave before that awkward moment, he...

Malik (Asante Blackk) had just one job to do on tonight’s episode of “This Is Us,” and because he couldn’t do it, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) might find out that his birth mother is alive. If that doesn’t track for you, allow us to break it down.
At the top of the hour, titled “Honestly,” Deja’s boyfriend, Malik, arrives at Randall and Beth’s house in Philadelphia to accompany Randall to work, shadowing him for a day in the life of a city councilman. When they get to the office, Randall decides to give Malik the fairly simple — but very important — task of starting and stopping his daily livestream news bulletin on cue. Malik says he’s up for the job and kicks off the livestream Ok, but when his mother calls to ask a question about his infant daughter,...

Election Day put a two-week-long pin in “This Is Us” fans’ plans to find out what happened to Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) biological mother, Laurel (Jennifer Holmes), after the Season 5 premiere revealed she did not actually die in childbirth as viewers — and the Pearson family — believed. But with Tuesday’s return of the NBC family drama, we got an itty bitty piece of the puzzle through the introduction of two new characters.
Tonight’s episode, “Changes,” opens on a scene of an older Vietnamese man (played by Vien Hong) and his young granddaughter (Brandilyn Cheah) fishing. We return to these two unnamed characters twice more in the hour, first to see the man in his kitchen preparing the fish he and his grandchild caught, telling her how he learned to cook because he wanted to “impress someone very special” to him.
