Who’d have thought they’d see ya? Certainly not John Travolta, who had a reunion with castmate Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs on the red carpet at the TCM Film Festival.
The two were part of sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, which ran on ABC from Sept. 1975 to May, 1979. Gabe Kaplan starred as a high school teacher in a charge of a remedial education class nicknamed the “Sweathogs.” The group included Travolta and Hilton-Jacobs.

Love him or hate him, Rob Zombie has become one of the prominent and unique voices in the modern horror landscape. His style is immediately recognizable, his choices in aesthetics, casting, and music practically codified. I say this not to criticize Zombie; he’s one of my favorite current filmmakers, and I like or love nearly every single one of his movies.
With two of his films celebrating an anniversary this year – Lords of Salem turns 10, House of 1000 Corpses turns 20 – it seemed like the right time to revisit his filmmaking career so far.
Today we’re ranking Rob Zombie’s entire live action filmography to date…
8. 31 (2016)
If I’m being totally honest, this is the one movie on the list I’m not entirely crazy about because, after the relative box office disappointment of Zombie’s experimentation with The Lords of Salem, it feels like he retreated artistically back...

Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs appeared on two episodes of Gilmore Girls as Principal Merton. Merton was the principal of Jess (Milo Ventimiglia)’s high school. Hilton-Jacobs thought they were looking for a female principal, so he was surprised he ended up getting the role, let alone coming back a second time.

Easily the best family-oriented black experience movie of the early 1970s, the Third World Cinema Corporation’s first film features Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones in a funny, endearing saga of life in the welfare system, with human feeling and compassion to spare. But the triumphant socially progressive movie fails the 2020 diversity test — its primary producer, cameraman, writers and director are white. Are we still allowed to enjoy it?

Almost exactly one year since it began its theatrical release in the United States, Bong Joon Ho‘s Parasite is arriving on The Criterion Collection. The Best Picture winner leads their October 2020 lineup, and for those who bought the standard Blu-ray edition earlier this year, you can now plan to give it to a friend as the disc is packed with extras.
Among the special features is the black-and-white version of the film, an audio commentary by Bong Joon Ho and critic Tony Rayns, a feature on the New Korean Cinema movement featuring Bong and Park Chan Wook, a storyboard comparison and more.
Also part of the October lineup is Stephen Frears’ crime drama The Hit, starring Terence Stamp, the Gregory Peck-led western The Gunfighter, John Berry’s Claudine, which features an Oscar-nominated performance by Diahann Carroll, and a new restoration of the Jean-Luc Godard classic Pierrot le fou.

In the next few years, I predict someone is going to make a staggering drama about the opioid crisis — a filmmaker like, say, Debra Granik, or maybe Kent Jones or Kathryn Bigelow or Steven Soderbergh. It will, of course, be a film about something much larger than drug addiction, one that confronts the disappearance of jobs, the cycles of hopelessness and rage, the gambits of pharmaceutical companies, and the loss of faith in the system (and the future) that has hollowed out the heartland. That’s a story that needs telling, and if it touches on the reasons so many Middle Americans have embraced a fascist used-car salesman as their political savior, then all the better.

When it comes to Rob Zombie as a filmmaker I’ll admit I have something of a soft spot for his work. He knows his horror and never bows down for the constant calls to conform to the politically correct society that seems to dominate the entertainment world now. With the release of 31, the question is, has he managed to pull off another The Devil’s Rejects or is this more of a Halloween 2?
The first thing you’ll notice with the story of 31 is that it is in very familiar territory. A group of carnival employees (including of course Sheri Moon Zombie) are travelling cross-country on Halloween. They are soon kidnapped and are entered into...

2Nd Update (9/23, 3:23 Pdt): An earlier version of this article listed Elle Evans as the actress who plays the title role in The Love Witch. That distinction in fact goes to Samantha Robinson. We regret the error. Update (9/22, 11:37 Pm Pdt): The same day this article was published, Paramount pushed back the release date for Rings from October 28 to February 3, 2017. Original Article: Fall has traditionally been viewed as the prime time of year for the horror film, but this summer was actually a pretty good one for the genre, with movies like The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, and the surprise smash Don't Breathe doing gangbusters business in the midst of blockbuster season. But the year's not over yet! With September in full swing, there are a number of worthwhile (and, yes, questionable) titles looming on the release calendar over the next three months. Below, you can find a rundown of 12 upcoming horror films,...

Immediately after my 31 screening, Rob Zombie revealed how it only took a matter of seconds for his film’s wicked competition to materialize as an idea. This explains the chewy, undercooked nature of Zombie’s The Most Dangerous Game homage, which delivers buckets of grossness and a story that lacks a single spec of conviction. It’s death for death’s sake if you will, perverted by misogyny and told through rotting teeth. No one is safe, nothing is a sacred and life is belittled by Zombie’s bleakest endeavor yet, which is far from a pulpy-but-still-kinda-fun grindhouse experience. Think characters you don’t care about being hunted by villains you don’t understand – hate both the player and the game, you won’t be the only one.

A new trailer has been released for Rob Zombie's upcoming horror thriller 31. I had a chance to see the film at Sundance earlier this year, and if you're a fan of Rob Zombie movies then you'll probably like it. I didn't really care for it because it's basically just a rehash of all the other films that he's made. I'm just waiting for Zombie to grow as a filmmaker and break out of his shell and do something different and unique. If you are just a fan of the blood and guts aspect of his films, there's plenty of that in this movie. You can read my review of it here.
The film tells the horrific story of five carnival workers "who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. At the mercy of their captors, they are forced to play a twisted game...

"Nightmarish on every level." If you already hate carnivals, you might want to stay away from this. Saban Films has released a second trailer for Rob Zombie's latest horror feature, titled 31, about an evil carnival, twisted game. Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in a "Hell-like" compound where they must survive for 12 hours against a gang of sadistic clowns to escape alive. Starring Sheri Moon Zombie (of course), Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Torsten Voges, Sandra Rosko, and Meg Foster. I can't even tell what's going on in half of this trailer, way too many close-ups and it's over-edited. But if you dig Zombie's messed up horror flicks, then have at it. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Rob Zombie's latest film 31, direct from YouTube: You can also still watch the first trailer for Rob Zombie's 31 here, for even more footage from this.

Your favorite movie is going to be remade or re-imagined. Just take a breath and accept that. Speaking of: Deadline announced yesterday that the 1975 coming-of-age tale Cooley High will be getting the reboot treatment. Devon Franklin, Tony Krantz (son to Steve Krantz, who produced the original) and Chicago’s own Common will be teaming up to bring a new version of the Chicago-shot classic to to theaters.
Cooley High was more sentimental than most of its blaxploitation counterparts, with more in common with American Graffiti and The Wanderers than Dolemite and Black Caesar. The story focused on the characters of Preach (Glynn Turman) and Cochise (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) as they make their way through teenage life on the south side of Chicago circa 1964. The film was lauded for mixing comedy and drama upon its release, dealing with themes of education and sexuality during teens’ formative years as well as ...

"All you have to do is survive 12 hours of our own private hell." Saban Films has debuted a trailer for Rob Zombie's latest horror film 31, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The plot involves five carnival workers who are kidnapped and held hostage in an "abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns." Starring Sheri Moon Zombie (but of course), Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Torsten Voges, Sandra Rosko, and Meg Foster. In Rob Zombie’s latest horror film “31,” a group of carnival workers are traveling through the country in an Rv on Halloween night in 1976. On their trip, they’re stopped and attacked with only six of them taken alive. Soon, they’re taken to a strange building where three strangers in aristocratic garb force them to play a survival game: For the next 12 hours, they must wander through a maze of rooms evading murder and torture the entire time. If they survive for the full 12 hours, they’ll be set free, but if not, they’ll join their carnival friends in the grave. “31” stars Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”), Sheri Moon Zombie (“The Lords of Salem”), Richard Brake (“Game of Thrones”), E.G. Daily (“Rugrats”), Meg Foster (“They Live”), Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (“Cooley High”), and more. Watch the trailer for “31” above.

If you're a fan of Rob Zombie's movies, then you'll probably enjoy his latest movie 31. It's pretty much the same thing we've seen him do over and over again. I watched the film at Sundance earlier this year, and I wasn't a big fan. I was hoping he'd do something different and unique with it, but it's just Sheri Moon Zombie and some friends trying to survive a bunch of maniacs who are out to kill them. You can read my review of it here. There were aspects of it that I did like, but ultimately it was a letdown. Two things that the movie doesn't lack, though, is blood and guts. Here's the synopsis:
From the visionary mind of the man who brought us House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and Halloween comes the horrific story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. At the mercy of their captors, they are forced to play a twisted game or life or death called 31. For the next 12 hours they must fight for their lives against an endless parade of homicidal maniacs.
The movie also stars Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, and Meg Foster. 31 is set to open in theaters on September 16th.

With his singularly gruesome horror features (and an episode of CSI: Miami to boot), by now you are either a fan of Rob Zombie‘s directorial style or not. The musician-director-writer-producer is now back this year with his latest genre feature, 31. Premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the first trailer has now landed ahead of a fall release.
The plot finds a group of carnival workers who get held hostage on the night before Halloween and must take part in a deadly game, all while crazy clowns and more attack. Starring Sheri Moon Zombie, Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, and Meg Foster, check out the trailer and poster below.

31 was undoubtedly made for those of us who have enjoyed Zombie’s work over the years. It may not be as ambitious as The Lords of Salem or as epic as The Devil’s Rejects but, by and large, it’s a ton of blood-soaked fun that gives us real characters to connect with, introduces us to some incredibly twisted assassins and goes for broke at every possible turn.
The story feels like Zombie’s own horror-fied version of The Running Man (with a bit of a Kubrickian flavor to it) and features breakout performances from Richard Brake and Jeff Daniel Phillips. Folks who aren’t into Zombie’s work probably won’t enjoy 31, but any film that gives the amazing Meg Foster the opportunity to wield a chainsaw like a total badass is aces in my book.

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

There’s no place quite like Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival. I’ve been lucky enough to attend and it’s really something to behold. The fest is this bustling adventure in a small mountain town, filled to the brim with independent films of all types. It also takes place right in the heart of Oscar season, so as we close the book on one year, another begins to sprout up with their would be Academy players. We can’t know yet if any will be there this year, but Sundance has announced the first wave of their genre fare, including the movie from Kevin Smith, one of their biggest indie success stories… Smith is one of my favorite filmmakers ever, a unique voice if ever there was one. Recently, he’s gone back down a very indie road, starting at Sundance about five years ago or...

As we near the end of the calendar year, there is still plenty to look forward to in cinema – and not just the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December. Yes, as we barrel down on the industry’s undisputed purple patch, our local theaters will soon become brimming with awards contenders each out to stake a claim for that coveted Oscar trophy.
Much like previous years, the Academy’s presentation will take place in February, and it’ll be preceded by the Sundance Film Festival one month prior. Returning for its 32nd year on the festival circuit, the Midnight selection has been formally revealed, confirming such entires as Rob Zombie’s horror 31 along with the Kevin Smith-directed college flick, Yoga Hosers.
Blending irreverent comedies with impassioned horror films, the Midnight slate of Sundance 2016 is once again jam-packed with notable release, and let’s not forget...

A change of pace for Sundance Film Festival, before we get their competition films (and much more), they’ve first unveiled their midnight line-up for 2016. Among the notable titles are the latest films from Rob Zombie and Kevin Smith, 31 and Yoga Hosers, respectively. However, what keeps me coming back to Park City are the surprises, so there’s also a handful of features from relatively unknown directors that have caught our eye, including Carnage Park and Under the Shadow. Check out the line-up below, along with debut images, and return for our coverage in around two months.
