Announced games for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1927 to 1955 (handing
the microphone over to his son Bill). He handled post-game wrap up
until 1963.
Announced the first televised game in Canada in 1952.
In 1972 he came out of retirement at the encouragement of CTV's Johnny
Esaw to broadcast the historic Summit Series between Canada and the
USSR.
The Hockey Hall of Fame's Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for broadcasting
excellence was named for his father. Hewitt was awarded it in 2007 posthumously.
He was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on June 23,
1972 for his services to communications in Canada.
