Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

I was at his side through so much: through good times and bad. But mostly good. And we had a lot of laughs. View this post on Instagram ...

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino reunite — and it looks like they’ve shed years off their faces in the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s CG-enhanced mob movie “The Irishman.”
Netflix’s true-crime story, which will open this fall’s New York Film Festival, stars De Niro as a World War II veteran turned mafia hitman named Frank Sheeran. Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa, the former president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters who went missing in 1975. Hoffa’s body was never found and his fate was speculated about for decades.
The trailer suggests a decade-spanning saga of organized crime in post-wwii America that covers Hoffa’s rise as leader of the Teamsters, Sheeran’s participation in hits for the Bufalino crime family as well as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

'True Grit' 2010: Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges. 'True Grit' 2010 review: 'Far Superior' to 1969 John Wayne Western I've gotten to the point with the Coen brothers where I just expect something wonderful every time they make a movie. For me, that was the case even with an effort like True Grit. For others, however, it was different. When the Coens announced their plans to adapt Charles Portis' novel, heads turned and were scratched by many. After all, not only were the brothers going to adapt a book, something they had done only once before (twice if you count The Odyssey), but they were going to remake a movie made famous by John Wayne in 1969. To many, especially lovers of Westerns, touching True Grit was sacrilege. But the Coens weren't deterred, and thankfully so. Their adaptation of True Grit is not only far superior to Henry Hathaway's 1969 version, it...

The odds of Cate Blanchett winning her second Oscar look even stronger after she collected the Screen Actors Guild award on Sunday for best lead actress in Blue Jasmine.
Similarly Matthew McConaughey.s hopes of taking the best lead actor prize have improved after SAG recognised his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.
The SAG awards for Jared Leto as best supporting actor for Dallas Buyers Club and for Lupita Nyong.o as supporting actress in 12 Years A Slave won.t have dimmed either.s chance of winning gold.
Meanwhile the outstanding cast award for American Hustle is viewed by some pundits as a harbinger of that film.s prospects of taking the best picture gong, as happened last year with Argo.
.At this point it just doesn.t appear Blanchett can be beaten . and she still has BAFTA to go before the Academy opens its envelopes on March 2,. opined Deadline com.s Peter Hammond.

The award season is now in full swing. This morning, SAG-aftra announced the nominees for the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Nominations and wins at these awards often add to one’s Oscar hopes, so it’s always interesting to see which projects are getting the most attention.
One neat personal note here is that, since I’ve been a card-carrying member of the Screen Actors Guild for 7 years, I get to cast my votes on all of these. Looking forward to that.

Massive materials companies like Dow and DuPont generate so many products that it's difficult to get a comprehensive picture of their sustainability as a whole. Nevertheless, author and investment adviser R. Paul Herman compares the two in the new book The Hip Investor. Below, we do the same.
Dow deserves credit for starting relatively early on its sustainability initiatives--the company established 10-year goals for environment, health, and safety in 1996. Since then, the goals have been updated. By 2015, the company has myriad ambitions in sustainable chemistry, climate change, energy efficiency, product safety, and more. Curious consumers can already learn about the safety of individual materials using Dow's Product Safety Assessment Finder. By 2015, Dow hopes to have safety assessments for all of its products.
But Dow is far from perfect. The company's greenhouse gas emissions intensity actually increased by 7% from 2007 to 2008--a disheartening statistic for a company that has been working on...

Which company should you trust to provide sustainable home products--Procter & Gamble or Colgate-Palmolive? Both companies manufacture a number of well-regarded brands, including Tom's of Maine, Tide, and Palmolive. But there can only be one winner in this sustainability battle. In the new book The Hip Investor, author and investment adviser R. Paul Herman compares the two. We do the same below.
Procter & Gamble has set a number of green goals that it hopes to achieve by 2012, including $20 billion in cumulative sales of products with low eco-impacts; a 20% reduction (per unit production) in total CO2 emissions, energy consumption, water consumption and disposed waste from P&G plants; and saving 20,000 lives by delivering 4 billion liters of clean water in the Children's Safe Drinking Water program. The company has already made some real changes in its business practices, too, with reduced packaging in brands like Pampers, Prilosec, and CoverGirl, cold water detergent (Coldwater...

It's tough to judge the sustainability of defense contractors--after all, they deal in wartime equipment, which isn't exactly friendly to the planet or the people living on it. But two of the biggest contractors, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, actually have a a lot going for them in the sustainability arena. In the new book The Hip Investor, author and investment adviser R. Paul Herman compares the two. We do the same here.
Raytheon relies heavily on weapons to keep its business going--91% of the company's total sales in 2008 came from arms sales (compared to Lockheed's 70%). And the company has also made some missteps in recent years. In 2006, Raytheon CEO William H. Swanson admitted that he plagiarized his booklet entitled "Swanson's Unwritten Rules of Management," and earlier this year, Raytheon was accused before the Senate Armed Services Committee of asking Blackwater to create a shell company in charge of getting a...

Can big banks ever be sustainable? The numerous government loans funneled to the largest banks in the U.S. indicate that entities like J.P. Morgan Chase and Bank of America might not be completely economically sustainable, but they are at least making strides in other types of sustainability. Author and investment adviser R. Paul Herman compares these two banks in the new book The Hip Investor. Below, we do the same.

The battle between Microsoft and Apple is practically legendary in the technology industry. Both companies offer strong products that appeal to different types of customers--Macs are traditionally geared toward design-focused users, for example--but they also differ greatly in the sustainability arena. Author R. Paul Herman teases out these differences in the new book The Hip Investor. We do the same here.
Microsoft excels in the sustainability arena, with concrete goals including a plan to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% compared to 2007 levels by 2012, a plan to phase out the use of phthalate plasticizers and Bfr (brominated flame retardants) from all hardware products by the end of this year, and the expansion of greenhouse gas reporting for the company's direct material supply chain.
But the mega-corporation could certainly stand to improve its disclosure policies. On October 31, 2009, Microsoft was removed from the Nasdaq Global Sustainability Index for failing to disclose the minimum...

Comparing Starbucks and McDonald's may not seem to make sense at first, but the two chains actually have a lot in common--namely, they both promise quickie and easy food and beverages on the go, and both companies have recently ramped up sustainability efforts. In the new book The Hip Investor, author R. Paul Herman attempts to compare the two mega-chains. Below, we do the same.
Let's just be clear--the inherent unhealthiness of most McDonald's meals give the chain a major disadvantage, even when compared to Starbucks' high-calorie Frappucinos. That being said, McDonald's has made some inroads in sustainability. A few examples: a "green" McDonald's that offers an Ev chargepoint, Led light fixtures, drought tolerant landscape plants, and an Energy Efficiency Education Dashboard; an environmental scorecard for suppliers; a successful sustainable fisheries program; and a next-generation fryer that allows restaurants to cook the same amount of product while using approximately 40% less oil than with traditional fryers.

It's easy to have an opinion in the Coke versus Pepsi taste wars, but things get a little murky when corporate sustainability is taken into account. In the new book The Hip Investor, R. Paul Herman attempts to sort out the sustainability claims of Coca Cola Co. and PepsiCo. So who comes out on top?
Coke's most impressive step toward sustainability is its "Commitment 2020" plan, which outlines the company's goals over the next 10 years. These include: a carbon footprint reduction of 15% (from a 2007 baseline), minimizing water use, recovering 100% of packaging, and increasing recycling. Coca-Cola has also pledged to phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)--potent greenhouse gases used as refrigerants--by 2015. Lisa Manley, the Director of Sustainable Communications at Coca-Cola, explained the company's commitment to using local resources in an interview with Herman: "There are some places we use sugar cane, in Europe there is sugar beet, and there are some places we use corn syrup.

There are some practical concerns in the battle between Sprint and Verizon--phone selection, for example, makes a big difference. But there are also a number of sustainability concerns to take into account, as explained in The Hip Investor, by R. Paul Herman.
Sprint has received significantly more attention for its sustainability initiatives, mostly because they have been flashier. The Samsung Reclaim, for example, was Sprint's first "green" phone, featuring recycled plastic, soy-based ink in its user manual, and a box made out of recycled paper. A successor to the Reclaim, dubbed the Restore, will be released this summer. But green phones like the Reclaim and the Restore are little more than gimmicks until they become more desirable than heavy hitters like the Droid and iPhone.
Sprint does make it easy for customers to recycle, however, with prepaid envelopes available at all stores for customers to send back phones, batteries, and accessories.

It's hard to pick a winner in a sustainability faceoff between two oil companies--we've all seen in recent weeks what kind of havoc said companies can wreak--we haven't forgotten about the Exxon Valdez disaster, either. Nevertheless, author R. Paul Herman attempts to compare Chevron and ExxonMobil based on the factors of profit, management, and human impact (health, wealth, earth, equality, trust) in the new book The Hip Investor. So who comes out on top?
ExxonMobil has invested some resources in renewable energy as of late--the company recently ponied up $600 million for a partnership with Synthetic Genomics to develop algae-based biofuel. Exxon has also given Stanford's Global Climate and Energy project, which researches alternative fuels, $100 million over the past decade. And in an email to Herman, Exxon claimed that it has invested over $1.9 billion in activities that cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency since 2004 (out of hundreds...

There can be only one winner in the battle of the big box retailers. In the new book The Hip Investor, author R. Paul Herman compares Walmart and Target in terms of profit, management, and human impact (health, wealth, earth, equality, trust). So which retailer is more sustainable? In our opinion, Walmart is the winner.
It's hard to argue with Walmart's superior profitability, but sustainability is always subjective. We've detailed Walmart's sustainability initiatives extensively on FastCompany.com--the company offers locally grown produce, energy-efficient products, and innovative internal recycling policies, among other things. Walmart's crown jewel, though, is the sustainability consortium it pioneered--a conglomeration of four major retailers (Walmart, Safeway, Best Buy, Ahold), 34 manufacturers, and 9 universities that is developing a green product-labeling standard for products found on all of these retailers' shelves. It's one of the most impressive things we've seen a big box retailer spearhead--ever.
That's not to say Walmart is perfect.
