Disney+ has set a May 31, 2024 premiere date for Jim Henson Idea Man, a documentary directed by two-time Oscar winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind). “If there was going to be a definitive documentary about Jim Henson, we had hoped it would be in the hands of an accomplished filmmaker. Ron Howard is both a creative and personality match for my father, unlike anyone else we could have contemplated,” stated Lisa Henson in an email to Vanity Fair.
“It was sort of anarchy on the outside, but underneath it, there was always a smart idea—a witty point to make, an observation about the world,” said Howard while discussing his impression of Jim Henson’s life with Vanity Fair. “To see that evolve through the medium of puppetry and television, and then on into movies, was so interesting to me. It’s beautiful how movies can take us back to an innocent time. A perfect example is the absolute adoration of Jim Henson’s classic features, The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986). For many, growing up on The Muppets and Sesame Street brought a level of excitement for both of these features. Even still, while Crystal made a decent showing at the box office, audiences weren’t ready for Labyrinth upon its release. Now, however, both films have found themselves well-loved and admired. So much so that both are getting the 4K treatment, and you can stream them immediately.

The decision was made by the Committee for Selection of Films for International Awards, formed by the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (Bicma).
This is the second time film by writer and director Dorji to have represented Bhutan, and after his first film, Lunana: A Yak In The Classroom, was submitted by the Himalayan territory for the 2020 awards, and went on to be nominated.

There were always two sides to the Jim Henson Company during Henson's lifetime. On one of them, you have the puppets they created for "Sesame Street" and "Fraggle Rock," shows that are as wholesome and earnest as their googly-eyed stars. On the other one, you have the often frightening and twisted puppets that Henson and his crew invented for "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth," as well as those for even creepier fantasy movies like director Nicolas Roeg's "The Witches." The Muppets, in case you were wondering, straddled the line between the two sides.
More than 30 years after its founder's death, however, Henson's legendary Creature Shop is now working on the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie. As anyone even remotely familiar with the premise for the original "Fnaf" video games could tell you, Blumhouse's film adaptation is a far cry from even the darkest projects Henson's company developed under his watch.

For Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico, co-founders of ShadowMachine, a boutique animation studio and production house, work on “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” began a decade ago as some of the first concept art was being created.
“We were first introduced to Guillermo del Toro through Lisa Henson back in 2012,” says Bulkley. “At that point, obviously, we were years away from actually making it, but it allowed for us to start building relationships with [animation house] Mackinnon & Saunders in the U.K. and [co-helmer] Mark Gustafson. By the time we actually were greenlit through Netflix, we had a good idea of what Guillermo wanted to do, which is innovate stop motion by way of a grounded world. What’s amazing about working with Guillermo, as well as Mark, is they have such a clear point of view on what the storytelling is. It allowed the artists that we assembled for this film...

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” hit Netflix a few weeks back, and it has already received a few critics’ awards and nominations, though it’s a very different animated movie than we normally get over the course of a year, being a stop-motion animated film del Toro directed with Mark Gustafson, working with Portland stop-motion animation house ShadowMachine. Lisa Henson, daughter of the late great puppeteer Jim Henson, is one of the film’s producers, which gives the film even more of a pedigree within that world.

Del Toro directed this stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio with Mark Gustafson, and wrote the screenplay – based on Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio – with Patrick McHale. While it is meant to be family friendly, it’s also a darker, more grounded take on the material. It’s not set in a fairy tale world, but in “Italy between World War I and World War II, during the rise of fascism and authoritarian rule in the country.” Geppetto carves Pinocchio out of wood taken from a tree that grew over the grave of his young son Carlo,...

"Pinocchio" is a beloved story about a little wooden boy who longs to become human, and we're about to be blessed with a truly imaginative take on the tale. Guillermo del Toro, the writer and director of some of the greatest cinematic fairy tales of our time, including "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Shape of Water," is creating a stop-motion animated film about the doll that longed for a flesh and blood body. It looks absolutely incredible, featuring some of the most detailed stop-motion models I've ever seen. Del Toro's "Pinocchio" will take the story back to its roots, riffing on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi and subverting it to tell a more del Toro-themed tale about the dangers of fascism.

Once upon a time, there were two “Pinocchio” movies getting made, and the Guillermo del Toro version looked positively stunning.
On Tuesday, Netflix debuted a new teaser trailer for the Oscar winner’s upcoming stop-motion take on Carlo Collodi’s Italian folktale, co-directed with Mark Gustafson and co-written with Patrick McHale. Disney will bring a live-action remake of its well-loved 1940 classic to Disney+ on September 8, with star Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voicing Pinocchio.
But where that production seems to be clinging to the old (a teaser from last month revealed what very well could be another shot-for-shot remake à la the 2018 “Lion King“), “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” explicitly promises “a story you think you know, but you don’t.”
Ewan McGregor voices morally righteous insect-turned-narrator Sebastian J. Cricket, alongside newcomer Gregory Mann as Pinocchio and David Bradley as Geppetto. Rounding out the voice cast are Finn Wolfhard,...

Guillermo del Toro introduced an exquisite scene and new teaser trailer from his anticipated stop-motion Pinocchio on Wednesday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
As one would expect from the visionary director, the craftsmanship — from the stylized character and production design to the lighting and sound — makes for a rich rendering of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s reimagining of classic 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, which follows a wooden marionette created by grieving woodcarver Geppetto.
In the moody scene, Geppetto (voiced by David Bradley) wakes in his woodcarving space next to a bottle and a broken picture frame, when he hears noise in his attic. “Who goes there?” he asks as he climbs the creaky ladder to the attic, revealing Pinocchio (Gregory Mann). “You asked for me to live. I’m your son,” the awkward wooden boy replies.

The production of Jeffrey Walker’s The Portable Door reached an Australian eco-milestone, becoming the first local film to operate under the UK Albert-BAFTA sustainability system.
Designed for productions to both measure and reduce their carbon footprint, the program includes a Carbon Action Plan with criteria across communication and engagement; editorial content; production energy, materials, and waste; travel; and carbon-neutral production.
Environmental organisation Albert awards certification to productions judged to have successfully completed the plan, seen in the form of a badge that often appears in the credits.
The system was introduced to The Portable Door via finance partner Sky Studios, whose parent company Sky aims to be Europe’s first net-zero carbon entertainment company by 2030.
Filming wrapped last month on the adaption of Tom Holt’s six-part fantasy book series, which stars Christoph Waltz, Patrick Gibson, Sam Neill, Miranda Otto, and Chris Pang.
