Mad Men: Season One

15 July 2008 9:03 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Befitting a television show about the dark art of advertising, Mad Men boasts irresistible surfaces, from the sharp suits and Good Housekeeping dresses to the fussy production design that lovingly recreates Madison Avenue in 1960. The show inhabits a world both seductive and sinister, but what sets it apart is the substance behind the shimmering exteriors. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner imbues his ad men, suburban moms, and single gals with a depth more common to literature than television. Supporting characters that initially appear as mere sharply drawn caricatures emerge as staggeringly complex figures. The protagonist's picture-perfect trophy wife (January Jones), for example, grows infinitely more compelling once it becomes apparent that her façade masks quiet suffering and madness. We're Wild for "Mad Men." But Are You?

10 July 2008 2:45 PM, PDT | From McTelevision.blogspot.com | See recent McTelevision news

Los Angeles --There are worse fates than spending a decade with "Mad Men," even if it only adds up to five years in real time. AMC's series stands as an example of TV at its most creative and challenging, and it enters its second season by setting us down in 1962. Season two premieres on July 27; expect an avalanche of reviews closer to that date. But on Wednesday morning, the cast and "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner were content to bask in critical love, a rare perfume in these parts due to dissipate sharply over the next two weeks.

And if we're being completely honest, that sweet scent of popularity could die out completely if the series takes a wrong turn in its sophomore season.

Propects for Emmy acting awards

From drama, comedy and miniseries, these actors are up for the part.

By Tom O'Neil, The Envelope

June 4, 2008

Emmy's winners for acting are chosen in a three-tier system by actors who belong to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. During the first two weeks of June, they participate in a popular vote that determines a Top 10 runoff in each race. Finalists submit a sample episode of their best work to judges, whose scores are combined by accountants in a 50-50 mix with results of the original popular vote. The five nominees in each category are then announced July 17. Winners are decided based on judges' scores of the sample episodes and are revealed at the awards ceremony to
